We in Sweden believe in a country where people can live without huge debts from being heavily sick or too poor to be able to go to school. Our taxes on our income are usually 30% or higher if you have a really high paying job. With all this money, we can provide free health care no matter how sick you are and it will still be free and you can go to any university you want without a big debt. There are those who will never be sick and never get children and those won't probably get as much out of this system as others. But it is an guarantee that if you get sick, we will back you up. And those people have been kids themselves and got free school and free food at the school. And now some cities are implementing free public transportations for kids during summer. We want to let everyone have a chance to be who they want without any economical restrictions binding them. We want to treat people equally. That is the lagom way of Sweden.

Cost of childcare in the UK is ridiculous. Even when a child turns 2 and is entitled to 15 free hours for a parent who wants to work full-time is impossible because to afford the extra childcare to do this, for the average earning person, wouldn't be worth it..yet parents who don't want to work get the same amount of childcare, supposedly to find work, wonder how many of them actually drop kid at childcare and job hunt.

She has never claimed any benefit. Worked her way through an apprenticeship from the day she left school. And when she went back to work wasn't entitled to any help for childcare because her son was too young for any "free" hours and when he does turn 2, even with the free hours it would still be way too expensive as she works full time. Seems like the government want people like my daughter to just give up and claim benefits. And I can guarantee that the lay abouts that ain't interested in finding work, drop kids off and go home to Facebook..makes me sick..which is why I gladly care for my grandson as I won't let the system ruin my daughter's hard work that she's done since leaving school!!

I am a Swede that has had 3 children in Child care. I have a had a very good pay but still only paid about £250 a month in total for them 3 for full time care, food and everything around it. Very very affordable. Now it is 15 years since my youngest left the care and I feel really it is great that I now can pay back via my taxes as I got so much in parental leave and child care when I needed it. I see it as a "redistribution" over my life time. I get great support when I need it as a young family and with care when I am old. When I am not getting the benefits I am paying to the system....Brilliant. (As I got my children about 30 years ago the cut for maximum compensation affected me but I wanted to be with my children some so I was home for some months even as a dad. Now a days many companies compensate so it is 80% on the full salary to promote that the parents share equally and don't need to select due to problem that the cut of the system gives. )

USA, Florida: our nominal tax rate is 17% (25% bracket, 2 incomes) and private childcare was $600 to 800 monthly per child. My wife had 6 weeks maternity leave and I exhausted my vacation to stay home. My child care costs age-out though, financial challenges that are reduced each year as my children age into the school system beginning at 4yrs. Great comparisons but could do without the judgement.

Nonsense. The nuclear family benefits the most from a successful child. Children historically have served as a retirement and care cushion in old age. Yes that child will pay taxes when older to reflect the investment society made in their success but that child will also give lavish gifts and money to their parents and siblings if they become successful. If you are unemployed on benefits or can afford it you get the chance to see your kids grow up. That is often a problem if the system is not built to make it possible for both parents to share the load. I am 60+ now and it was 30 years since I got my children in at that time it was the cut that they are toking about and as earned much more it was a hit...but we thought this was so important and I was home about 2-3 months per child and shared the load to be home when kids were sick....even though doe to job situation my wife took a larger share as I traveled a lot. Since 20 years my company actually compensated over the breaking point so everyone has 85% regardless of salary to promote sharing. An honestly, it felt as natural for the men to be home when kids were sick and colleagues accepted it as natural if that is the mentality. That is a great thing...

I think in the UK we should start with giving men longer mandatory paternity leave so the stigma of a woman getting pregnant changes. From there we can make maternity leave longer. I would definitely pay more tax, good family life is important for the development of children. Children in the uk appear more stressed than Swedish children. I believe the long working hours and less contact with the children is a contributing factor. Family life is very important to Swedes. My experience having one child and heading back to work before my maternity leave was up I believe affected by child. Leaving early for work and back by bedtime Mondays to Fridays. So yes, the government should do more for working families.

In Belgium we pay the highest percentate of taxes in the world. Around what they pay in Sweden. But our childcare is hardly better than the UK. It made me not want kids because It's too expensive. It's like starting a business where you know there's no chance you'll be able to pay it all.. Here in Sweden we pay a lot of VAT tax as well that is common for everyone. I think you can say that we have a system where we redistribute over our life time. We get excellent support for young families with great parental leave, sick leave when children are sick, good affordable childcare, free education, free school lunches for all, etc. and we are compensated according to our salary. When the kids are not needing this we still pay taxes but we can see how our kids benefits from the system...and our old parents get good care too. I think it is very very smart to do it like we do and support the periods in life when it is the hardest. It also opens up for careers for both parents.

I'm British with some Swedish roots and I'm thinking about coming back to my homeland. 😉 The Swedish system is referred to as the Nordic model and I'm proud of my Nordic roots. Fairer societies. Sweden doesn't have a minimum wage by default because business are made to pay a working level wage. Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland are my favourite countries. Canada is a nice country, too. in romania, after you give birth, you stay at home for 2 years and you get 80% of your salary. then, you can work and for another year you get your salary plus those 80% of your salary. in the meantime, all medical supervision and drugs are free. it's true that we don't have big salaries and good hospitals, but still.. we own much of our houses (80%) , and daily living is pretty cheap. i personally own my own house and i'm debt free. and many of my freinds and family aee in the same situation.

"Oooh, everything is great in Sweden", "They have so much better lives", "The Swedish XY system is sooooo good".... etc. etc. etc. You pay a lot of taxes in Sweden. A LOT. So in a sense, it's not free at all. Especially people from the USA seem to think we're living in paradise here. Over there, you get costly bills, yes. But you can also control more what you're actually paying for. Over here, the government just take your money and they can use it however they like. Most recently, they decided to give a HELL lot of OUR tax money, that is meant for OUR people and our society, to complete strangers, without even knowing if they were refugees. Hell, many of them were known NOT to be refugees. They still get lots of free stuff. Same in other European countries. You people also seem to believe that ALL our healthcare is free. It's NOT. Firstly, you need to pay a certain amount EACH YEAR before you get anything free from healthcare (of course that's not for people who throw away their passports and claim they are refugees, in Germany those people even RECEIVED CASH from hospitals). Secondly, only CERTAIN things are free, i.e. the things our healthcare thinks you need. You see where I'm getting here? They won't give you free exams, tests etc. if it's not bloody obvious you need it. Especially with things that are harder to diagnose, which is pretty much everything except for diabetes and influenzas. They can only spend a certain amount on each patient, I've heard this from a physician himself. Do you really believe Sweden is so nice to its people that it will put their well-being over profit? It's not. They do NOT want to lose money by giving you free stuff. So, the stuff that's free is the stuff you need not to die. Got bowel problems? They'll just tell you you have IBS and send you home. Just because a simple physician can't diagnose it, it doesn't mean they'll refer you to a specialist or do any more tests on you. Got hormonal problems? They'll happily prescribe synthetic hormones which your body produces enough of naturally, but DON'T expect to see an endocrine specialist who'll actually help you. Got mental health problems? If you've paid enough money, you might see a psychologist for free a few times, but don't expect it to last longer than that. Seeing them more than 5 times will cost you some effort, and even then you will just get a few more times than 5, but not much more. If you want REAL therapy, GUESS WHAT? We have to pay for that out of our own pockets, JUST LIKE YOU. So, on top of paying all those taxes, on top of paying 1000 SEK each year before getting ANYTHING for free, on top of that you will have to pay for everything they refuse to give you, including many medications. Does that sound generous to you? If so, I guess you haven't had a lot of health trouble going on (yet). They will NOT run a lot of tests on you, often not even as much as necessary. YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THOSE TESTS YOURSELF. There are also check ups that, according to (among others) precautions for medicines, SHOULD be done before given said medicine. Some of these tests are routinely skipped however, even if that can actually be HARMFUL to patients (there are real cases like this, they happened here in Sweden). Would you call that great health care? Well, I certainly wouldn't. It's still better than what you get in 3rd world countries, but it's not as great as everyone seems to think it is. Regarding the parenting thing, it's okay for the amount of taxes I guess. Just keep in mind you can only send your kid to playschool so many days a week, depending on how much you work. And you DO need to work here, both parents. Now, you've certainly heard the news about transgender playschools developing in Sweden... THAT'S also our tax money, right there. The playschools are flooded, there are way too many children. Especially now, since the migrant crisis. Btw, our health care system has IMMENSE struggles due to that same reason. Cases of multiresistent TBC in Germany, for example. AND THEY STILL TELL YOU THOSE PEOPLE DON'T TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM US. Go to the hospitals/schools/playschools and ask them, they will tell you a very different story. Nobody asked the people if we wanted to open OUR borders (= our wallets, schools and hospitals etc) to so many people who aren't even refugees, who just came here to exploit our welfare system. This welfare system is very, VERY vulnerable. And it's just started to be exploited by people coming from all kinds of places. This system cannot last. It's so weird how people from around the world, and also the Swedish people themselves, still believe that everything is so great here. I'll just say, wait a few more years. So much damage has been done, but I guess most people won't see this damage until it comes to their very own home. And that's exactly how it's wanted.

The reason may have something to do with the fact that Sweden has a 61% income tax compared to 20% for most people in the UK. Did you read my comment? I have chronic illnesses and am unable to work. I suffer every single day and if you knew how horrible my life has been you'd faint. Do you really think I should starve, live homeless and die way too early just because I can't support myself? Do you think that's fair? Is decent life only for those who happen to be born with healthy DNA? I believe in everybody's equal worth, the same right to be alive, but maybe you don't.

In your case, i believe it is right to allow you tax funded treatment because of your condition, as you have no control over it. But one of my main issues with socialist healthcare systems is that they cover preventable diseases, such as obesity related diseases and lung cancer caused from smoking. I agree with the right to help a child who has appendicitis as its not his fault and is not preventable, but i stop wanted to give my tax money to some obese person who now needs treatment for diabetes or gastric bypass or to a smoker who now has lung cancer. they knew the risks and choose to continue, it should be up to them to pay the price. Socialist healthcare systems also provide ethical issues such as abortion. i dont agree with abortion and many people dont, but its legal and i have to deal with that. but i dont want to pay for something that is preventable and that has better alternatives than killing a child, you want an abortion, pay for it.

Please don't buy the hype, most government services is in severe decay in Sweden, the police or ambulance wont show up cause they are always under staffed and once you get to the hospital, the healthcare is terrible in Sweden, so is public schools with some of the worst performing students in Western Europe. And remember we pay more for horrible service, the British better look elsewhere for good example to follow, Sweden is a setting sun.

A fixed non negotiable cost basically functions like a tax. In the UK you can't not spend extortionate amounts of money on rent, transport or childcare. Most of our salaries are gobbled up by those three things. So would I rather have that money lining the pockets of private investors or, if I was in Sweden, paying the same amount in tax so that every citizen could live in housing worthy of the name and not be punished for having children (which is kind of important of you don't want major problems in the future when your tax base retires and there's nobody to replace them)? I think it's obvious. I'd rather be paying triple the amount of tax and have cheaper living costs. We are the country of Grenfell, nurses using foodbanks and women in comas being told they aren't entitled to financial help because they are healthy enough to work. But you know, other than that, the British model is doing great 🙄
