As someone who grew up with a financially responsible but absent father, I understand the emotional void JM referenced. It's impossible to build a parent relationship with a distant person. I have friends who grew up in Africa, while their mothers worked in the U.S. after they came here they couldn't build that bond, they wanted to go back to their grandparents or move out. Of course whatever rule the parent set is seen as a reproach when the other parent can do whatever and get away with it because you got used to it.

This man didn’t sign the birth certificate so he should have been given an opportunity to ask the court for a paternity test right when he was initially served. I didn’t hear him say he did that. He said he brought it up to a social worker years later. Usually unmarried men who don’t sign birth certificates are only declared the father without a paternity test if they don’t show up for a court hearing. Did this man go to court I wonder? My guy friend was served papers saying he was a kid’s dad because the mom had gone on welfare. He asked for a test and turned out to be his kid. Mind you the daughter was like 11 when he found out about her and to the day they don’t have a good relationship because they didn’t bond early and lived in different states.
