Deaf people are way more visual so their language has to be very visual.
@ChlomeRendia6 ай бұрын
If I recall, the actors who played deaf characters are all deaf. I heard an interview with Marlee Matlin, the actress who played the mom, and she said she had been self conscious about her signing. While she is deaf, she hadn't used pure ASL, but as part of a fully deaf family, the role called for a more pure form than she was used to. I don't remember the details, but that might have been because she was the only deaf person in her family, so their signing was the probably signing of hearing people signing English. I don't speak ASL, but I have looked up some of the grammar forms as I keep trying to learn. It is fascinating how different things are from English.
@draconicfeline61775 ай бұрын
Yeah this is why I'm thinking of giving up on ASL for good. 3rd try but... Why bother? I'll never get it right, and only practice it wrong.
@ChlomeRendia5 ай бұрын
@draconicfeline6177 why give up? I took Spanish all through high school with a teacher who never made us speak in conversations, so I can read it, but I don't speak it very well. That said, it has allowed me to communicate with people, even if only at a basic level. Imagine being unable to communicate with the majority of people around you. That is the experience of many deaf people. If I were them, I'd rather talk to someone who cared enough to try, even if they make mistakes, than no one at all.
@draconicfeline61775 ай бұрын
@@ChlomeRendia Yeah, not my experience. You at least can read Spanish. That's useful. I never found that magic click moment that my classmates did, and if I practice wrong, say, from an app with a study partner who is hearing, the bad habits are forever. If my useless vocab sign just burdens others or serves as an insult to them... Then I shouldn't bother? If I am the problem, why try? It's not like anyone needs my help, best to stay in my lane, get out of their way, and not try again.
