Isabella Barrett is fifteen and a self-made millionaire. Actually, she’s been one since she was six after achieving international fame through the pageant world, featuring on the popular show “Toddlers and Tiaras.” She did, however, leave the show after saying that her rival’s mother dressed her daughter up “as a hooker.” Now, at the tender age of fifteen, she owns three fashion brands, with plans to become the next billionaire. VICE’s Sydney Lima spends a couple of days with her in Rhode Island and New York to discover how she has dealt with fame and money at such a young age.

Jake As someone who writes books about narcissism, who has had a blog for ten years on the topic and who counsels victim of narcissistic abuse, I would never call her a narcissist...not yet. Female narcs are the worst of the worst with their own particular penchant for doing evil things and I don't see that here. She is simply too young for that label and has too many people on the "team" helping to mold the Bella brand for anyone on the outside to even begin to differentiate where Bella begins and the brand ends. It's not fair to call her a narc. She's just a kid. She appears to be having fun and the truth is, she PARTICIPATES in the work, is creative and has actual ideas that excite her. We'll check back when she's, say, 28 to make a better assessment.

@CryptoCrackYoMomsBack you’re extremely ignorant, maybe try having a little empathy for the hardworking Americans barely getting by because of low wages, predatory loans with high interest rates, high rent/grocery/gas/bills costs, medical bills, sick children, childcare and more. You don’t know everyone’s situation. I don’t understand why you’re trying to belittle people for “being bad with money” when they’re working hard every day just to make ends meet. Let me tell you, a single mom is more worried about working and putting food on the table for her kids with the last 50 dollars she has than even paying the electricity bill, let alone investing it. Trust me, I’ve been the kid in that situation. Have a good day.
@BoobtitsCats

You are taking the phrase "work hard" waaayyy to literally. When people say work harder they don't literally mean grab a shovel and start digging trenches for 16 hours a day. They mean work smarter, more efficient, make better decisions. An idiot but an extremely "hard worker" can dig a trench for 16 hours a day and wonder why he is going no where in life. A hardworker could also mean that same guy saved money to buy a tractor to do twice the work in half the time thereby increases his output for the same exact hours a day. Which type of hardworker would you employ? The first worker or the 2nd worker?? HARDWORK = THINK MORE. You know? thats why CEO's get paid more than anyone in the company, because their decision making and leadership skills is 1000x harder than digging a hole for 16 hours a day. Simple laws of economics, if you get paid $xx,xxx and your manager gets paid $xxx,xxx and if your boss is getting paid $x,xxx,xxxx. Who is doing most of the "hard work"?? And please Don't tell me you think all bossess and managers just kick up their feet and watch youtube videos because "they made it". Jeff Bezos for example says he defines success if he can only make FOUR good decisions per day, 1 bad decision could be catastrophic to hundreds of thousands of workers. Warren Buffet says he only needs to make 1-2 good decisions per year. Who is the harder worker? The guy digging a hole for 16 hours a day, or warren buffet managing billions of dollars that effect millions of lives?

She would not have been afforded any of these opportunities if it had not been due to the people around her essentially creating her career. This is not a slight on Isabella, it's not questioning her work ethic or that she hasn't put a lot of effort into her projects. It seems like she was coached, probably by her mom, to say some of the things she said, like saying she wanted to go to school to be a nurse, in order to seem more like someone with a good heart that wants to help people. We all know that she's not going to turn away from her instagram fame and lucrative businesses to take a huge pay cut and do the back-breaking work that nurses do. Or when she said that she wasn't writing the book to make money and then her mom chimed in with "if she said she was all about the money that wouldn't be good so her answer was a perfect answer"

I’m just saying, I think that the mom is living vicariously through her daughter and somewhat using her as a cash cow. It’s not bad all around. I just don’t trust the mom and don’t think her intentions are totally pure. I also think mothers that do Toddler and Tiara type pageantry stuff with their kids are gross. She told her single-digit-aged daughter to call the competition a hooker. That is not level-headed parenting, but somebody obsessed with winning…and her daughter is the vehicle thru which she is doing that. The little girl probably didn’t even know what a hooker was. Most of the people in these comments forget that she’s a child and are attacking/ belittling her as if she knows and controls everything she’s saying which seeing her mom, she doesn’t. Like Jesus. She doesn’t know that she’s being exploited or taken advantage of because she doesn’t have the depth of knowledge, emotional maturity, or information. She’s being fed what to do, say, look, etc. All of your insults and jabs at a child sound bitter and honestly weird. When she grows up there’s a lot of things that when she looks back on will cause her pain and trauma. She’s been working since she was a small child to provide her family the life they want even if that meant exploiting her, isolating her, over working, and treating their child like a employee/cash cow to milk. She doesn’t have actual autonomy and this interview was most likely set up by her mother in the foot of Kyles supposed “self made billionaire” bs on Forbes. This girl is doing what she’s been told is right in a capitalistic society set on making money by any means necessary. She is a product of her parentage and worse a product of our system and values. It’s not wrong to want to be successful or to want your child to be finically free, it is a problem to base your own personal value in this world intrinsic to how many zeros you have in your bank account. It is problematic to deny your child their childhood and work what talent they have to satisfy your own greed and desire. She’s not self made because mostly everything she’s done has been to fulfill other peoples desire/expectations for her.

the scene with the book publisher says so much. The mom talking about how Isabella "worked" for her 15 minutes of fame and stretched it into this career when it was luck and timing that gave her the exposure needed to do this not some act of hard work that can be replicated. Also the book publisher actively making fun of 99% of bella/teenagers who spend their youth doing "nothing" and instead need to be what?? starting your own clothing line while using the exposure of years of pageant victories aided by a television show on TLC that made you famous? Also the publisher actively shutting down Isabella's positive attitude about how the book is supposed to help people by just fucking saying the quite part out loud "Im here to make money off of your fame and to capitalize on this to make as much as i can for myself". This is also not judgment call on isabella, She got into this game incredibly young, and as she even admits in this video, shes not legal to do most of the things like own a company/manage the finances/ do marketing ect. Shes a child and should be treated like every other child, her decision to be in pageantry, start a business, do a superbowl ad whatever, is all encouraged and supported by her mother who lets her live a normal life while trying to balance it with this half. My real gripe with all of this isn't the mother and how she treats her daughter or even how Isabella's life has panned out, I really hate this false narrative that they worked hard to earn this money when TLC made her, and anyone in that position could have turned out this "successful". But it was luck and timing not skill and hard work that made her succeed so if her real goal with the book is to make people happy and give advice on how to make a million dollars, you should start with the fact that its not gunna happen to 99% of people and thats okay.

I would make sure my child understands that the million she made is temporary. Looks fade and the resulting income will dry up. If she gets a good education it cannot be take away. For example, as a doctor she could make over 500k every year for the rest of her life. That income is not dependent on looks or trends. Being a physician has been a rewarding profession for myself.

I haven't watch the video but let me guess. She was born into a super rich family where basically she can do anything and not worry about any finacial problems and her parents got all connection she needs. Edit: oh look at that, how predictable. Also I love how she basically did nothing? Got into child beauty show probably because her mom told them to, deliberately causing a controversy to gain attention because her mom yold her to, and then *suddenly* she own several fashion brand.
