What a beautiful hymn. The lyrics are so comforting. A great hymn to sing n worship our Heavenly Father. We sang this in our church for fathers day.

Thanks to Jesus our God and Father for such a beautiful piece of music. God is still with us. Thank you Jesus; I long to see the day when I can look you, my creator, in the eyes and bow before you. Let us worship Him with sincerity, truth and pure hearts for who He is - God of love and mercy. So that when He comes we may live with Him forever in peace - Come Lord Jesus come.

Written by Lina Sandell based on images she saw while sitting on the branch of a large ash tree front of her home at age 13. The melody is an old folk melody used in Sweden but probably of German origin. It first appeared in Swedish publication in 1855.

that repeating flute music at the intervals certainly detracts from the beautiful simplicity of the hymn. I was raised in The Covenant Church which was mainly Swedish immigrants - hearing them sing them sing their hearts out on this made me realize what a sacrifice many of them made coming to America - never seeing their parents of siblings again many of them.

I believe that's a clarinet and I personally think it gives one pause to think about the words to that verse.

I agree with you Lois. It seems to me that for the many years they have an in house arranger. Unfortunately everything is sounding the same. A Iot of sugar and little spirit.

I'm so glad you posted this lovely old Lutheran hymn! It's a favorite of three generations (at least) of my family! And nobody has ever done it better than the Tabernacle Choir! Blessings.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (May 25, Easter 6), I played this as the Hymn of the Day. It is #781 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

It's me, again. And this time, it is with a heavy heart that I post this. Today, November 3, I said good-bye to one of my former church members and childhood friend. She left this world on October 30, a victim of Wegener's Disease. I saw her twice in September and she was her old self, cheerful and upbeat, and she just knew that she was going to beat this. Sadly, it wasn't to be. We will all miss you, Margaret. You were a special person. We will NEVER forget you. We sang this as the Eulogy Hymn.

Hi, all! This haunting, beautiful melody has a rich history in word and song. Check it out if you wish. My grandparents brought this over in the late 1800's from Sweden. In Sweden, it initially could not be used in the Lutheran Church because it was considered too folksy. The King requested to hear it and he loved it so much it was used from that day on. It has been in my family ever since at every baptism, funeral, marriage, birthday, etc. since, whether I or my family was in a Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, etc. church. I get to sing it solo hundreds of times and parishoners often ask to have it redone. It makes a great solo in Swedish and English. This version by the MTC is rich....done even more simply, the song simply is moving. Great, resting words indeed. So theologically accurate. See the other Net video versions. Most of them you will view are terrific. The one rendition by the Lincoln, NE church small group is great. Enjoy. God bless, MO
