(2) Leopard 2A4 are way more than capable, extensively used by most European nations. (3) Chile has 18 F-5, given the lack of Argentinian supersonic airplanes, they can be used for interception and air superiority. (4) Chile has 35 C-101 for close-combat air support. (5) The Super Tucano from Chile have laser-guided weapons. (6) Chile still have 21 old Mirages capable of flying, and a few other for spares. (7) Chile has 1 Airborne Early Warning and Control. (8) 8 from the 9 Chilean frigates have Super Puma helicopters with anti-ship missiles. The only danger for Chile is if Peru and Bolivia join to the war. Which is the hypothesis for Chilean defense, Chile plans its defense assuming a war against Argentina, Peru and Bolivia at the same time. Argentina by itself does not have a chance against Chile.

Like Binkov said, the military has lost the confidence of a sizable chunk of the population, and defence spending sends the wrong message to the voteres, says the local savvy politician. As an argentinian I can assure you Chile would hands down wipe the floor with us Argentina just doesn't support it's army, neither economically nor socially, since after the last military regime and the Falklands (Malvinas) war there's been a consistent and sistematic indoctrination in schools against any trust the populous may have had left for its army. On top of that Argentinians just don't seem to be neither patriotic nor violent enough to fight a war, aside from fringe elements I think the population would largely prefer making concessions to Chile in order to keep peace. Oh and I forgot to mention our economy.. or lack thereof. We currently can barely support ourselves, nevermind supporting an army.

From years of reading youtube comments i thought the most visceral rivalry in South America was between Chile and Peru. I'd love to see a video about these two, as if Chile buys a Frigate, Peru buys one. If Peru buys a fighter jet, Chile buys one soon after. They have similar economies, though Peru is just short of doubling Chile's population. They've lost multiples times in the International Court, and have been offered good deals by Peru, Chile and Brazil for access to ports and reduction in tariffs, yet they continue to refuse and complain. Look, I'm all for continuing to improve relations with Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Everyone stands to gain SOOOO much more working together then being agressive and hostile. Now that Peru had allied with Chile in the Pacific Alliance, I think both nations can set aside their differences and ugly history to finally work together. Afterall, we did fight side by side to win our independence against the Spaniards. Let that be our heritage, and not the wars we've had agaisnt one another.

Here are the numbers for combat jet aircraft capable of air to air combat for both countries (inventory figures, not in service figures): Turkey: 342 total airframes F-16C/D B50 Fighting Falcon: 110 F-16C/D B30/40 Fighting Falcon: 160 R/F-4E Phantom II: 49 F-5A/B Freedom Fighter: 23 Egypt: 299 total airframes Dassault Rafale D/E: 24 F-16 C/D B52: 20 MiG-29M/M2: 15 F-16 C/D B32/40: 178 Dassault Mirage 2000EM/BM: 20 F-16 A/B B15: 42 As we can see Turkey has more fighter aircraft, but Egypt has access to more advanced aircraft like the Dassault Rafale. Not reaaally, you don't know how much resources Pinochet was putting into expanding Chile's military, buying the best technology the country could afford (tanks, airplanes, small arms, transport vehicles) and conscripting dozens of thousands. We were more than aware that Argentina was aiming at us, all personnel (including the administrative side) had been given their war uniforms, and plans for war had been long stablished. We even built a task force of fake tanks in the South to make it look like we were going to attack from there. My dad always tells me of how Pinochet bragged about "Having 80.000 armed men" (he was quite the superb individual haha). And intelligence. Fucking intelligence. Our intelligence service was unstoppable back then, so much so that Chile carried a terrorist attack on US territory, to kill a communist exilee, Orlando Letelier (killed while literally on the capital city of the USA). We had lots of experience from the prosecution of Communist leaders and counter-terrorism operations to prevent communist guerrillas armed by the Communist bloc from successfully solidifying. Tbh, it would have been one hell of a war, but we could have held our ground

Absolutely. War of the Pacific left a *big* scar in these countries that hasn't healed yet. Bolivia still yearns for having access to the ocean again, and Peru also wants back the territories it lost to Chile... though to be fair the border conflict between Peru and Ecuador are also a possible red button ready to be pressed.

You guys are living in the past. The only flare-up will occur if Maduro gets desperate and tries, as a last-ditch move to prop up nationalism, to fight Colombia. Not that this will go well, since Colombia and the US are very tight and the US has been looking for an excuse to remove the Chavistas for 20 years. You'd see massive Colombian ground forces combined with US air support. It'd be over quickly, but the question would be whether to take San Cristobal and move south to Caracas to forcibly occupy the capital and oust Maduro.

The main issue here is that if Chile is being aggressed against there is a high likelihood that the US would intervene since it has really strong ties to Chile and it is a strategic partner of the US in the SOUTHCOM region, the US would either send a maritime force to support Chilean operations, or impose santions and blocakdes of the nations attacking Chile. It is not like Chile is 100% safe, but overall I doubt the US would allow an allied nation to come under attack.

They are really close to us, nice people and there is no gain in such a fight. There are military and politicians who wanted a war before, but it didn't happen. Our people have a great connection now, with people from chile going to study in free Argentina's educational system, and people from Argentina coming here to work or do some shopping. Chile's best "defensive asset" is the Andes range. During winter everyone knows the border passings can be easily blocked with snow. Any occupant force in both sides of the border, can have a very hard time especially during winter, being usually cut-off from reinforcements and supplies by land. In the Central regions, Chile has an advantage because the majority of the chilean industry (including military like Famae), are located in Center-South Chile. We can easily invade Argentina from here, and sustain the invading force on the other side of the mountains. But at the same time, Argentine industry is more developed than the Chilean one, so you can have a stalemate. The good point is that F-16s gives us the edge to undermine the Argentine industry, but the Argentinian territory is quite big to try to put under control from this side of the Andes. In the end, Chile's military developments are mainly focused to the "Peruvian/Bolivian threat", because the Andes range helps to defend our most important assets, located exactly in the Center-South. Also, the Peruvian Navy is sure a challenge, so also our naval developments are aimed at such challenges. We also know that domestic Argentinian economy also plays in our favor, because of the never-ending problem of the debt. I heard many years ago, that one of the reasons why Argentinian Military can't modernize in a more aggressive way, it is related to the consequences of the Falklands War. Some "secret clauses" exist about the armed forces, and also the UK vetoes any kind of purchase that can put the Falklands under threat. Since Chile is aware of certain realities, we can better focus on possible threats coming from the North. The F-16s (especially the brand-new Block 50+) were also bought to put the Peruvian Mig-29s in check, bringing stability in the region. Chile's security environment was always quite complex and challenging, but at least right now the threat of conflicts is, i can say, in its lowest point in our whole region's Post-Independence history.

We used to talk very similar, but now not that much. Argentines were influenced by italians, and we chileans, sincerally don't know (I think we get away from our neighbors through the years, and that's why our languaje changed). But we two use the 'voseo' (informal way in Chile). It's like: A lot of latin american countries and Spain: Tú tienes (you have) Argentina: Vos tenés. Chile: Vos tenís (but we don't pronounce the letter s, and sounds 'vo tení').

I do not know where you got your information, that happens to be incomplete. First of all, the northern part of the country has the Leopard2 tanks upgraded to Chilean standard, and the leopard2 are prepared to work at an altitude of 4000 m. over the sea level, so they can cross the border to Argentina from the north, in the south Chile has the Leopard1 also upgraded to Chilean standard. Furthermore, the Chilean Army is 100% professional. The selective service is all volunteer and stays as a reserve troop. The Argentine Air Force is very limited and so the Navy.
