I started making my own after ordering them at a Sonic. I found to get their “ flavor” I use a can of Wolf brand chili and add to that peppers etc if wanted.

We do something similar. We deep fry the tater tots instead. You gotta try the chili on spaghetti instead of spaghetti sauce

This is making me hungry. Word of warning: shredded cheese has eye medicine in it. I again shred my own. I used hundreds of the bagged shredded cheeses and now have severe eye problems.
