you got this bro, make sure to keep time on the hi-hat aswell, and last bit of advice, do the rhythm played at the trombone solo + sax solo that matches the audio.

Tenor 1 player. I have a solo that isn’t featured in this recording!! Really tricky to learn, but this song is definetly the best jazz band song I’ve played this year.

update: it’s like 2 years later and i got a spot in jazz band as a guitarist- my brother played piano so we’re pretty similar in terms of what we do.. (i was an 8th grader when i left the first comment and am now a sophomore) i really wanted to get in jazz (as you can tell from how salty the previous comment is) and finally did it! not sure if anyone will read this but always remember if you really really want something, than you will do all it takes to get it 😊😊😊

I have such fond memories of playing this in middle school. Now that I’m coming back to it as someone who’s about to go to college for jazz I realize how simple this song actually is. Other than the sax soli/break this song is very bare bones compared to other Latin charts I love today. I think this song was just easy enough for a middle school me to play and just catchy enough for a middle school me to love. I love this song.

As someone who has only been playing set for one year, and has to play this confidently at a jazz fest in a month, I am struggling naturally. I specialize in rock and swing.I’ve never played a song like this, does anyone have any tips?

Listen to a crap ton of samba music since thats the groove of this tune, listening is the most powerful tool to help to grow musicianship. Have that groove really sink into your subconscious. Transcribe ideas from good samba drummers. Memorize the melody and the shout section, be able to sing it from memory, so that you can play fills around it to support the horns.
