Some symbolism in the game: - Although the Tanuki statue has been seen as bringing fortune and luck to one self in current time, back in folklore, they are sometimes seen as bad omens as the Tanuki, or bakedanuki, are yokai that likes to play trick on humans by shapeshifting itself to humans or other things. - In a lot of Asian cultures, crows that surround a house means that someone in the house has died or a warning that someone will die. - Cutting one's fingernails or toenails at night is considered a bad omen in old Japanese folklore as it means they will curse their parents to death. -In Japanese culture, the Koi fish is a symbol of luck, prosperity, and good fortune. Killing it, more specifically, beheading it, will render it powerless and thus no longer effective.

I have to disagree. While I admire the drive to be better every time, and they are definitely talented, the whole “I’m a girl being stalked” premise while is genuinely terrifying and is a very real issue, it got old for me about 6 games ago. I’m excited for this one tho if it’s different.

My favorite part of chillasart games is that they reference actual problems prevalent in Japanese society, such as overworking, suicide epidemics, toxicity in family dynamics covered up or going unreported due to social pressures, parasocialism and the darker parts of the entertainment industry, etc. Parasocial was one of the first Chillasart games I saw, and I got chills at how real it was, especially since Oshi No Ko, which also dealt with the dark side of show biz, came out not long before. These social issues aren't just a problem in Japan tho and I'm glad media is tackling these issues.

@@Allie3000-uu6jc oh, sorry, this was before I finished the video and I assumed that this game would have a real world problem it was addressing like The Kidnap and Parasocial - maybe toxic office standards/asking too much for an interesting story, because the Boss didn't seem to care about sending the protag to a suspicious abandoned house and brushed it off when he vanished. All the same, this isn't an unwelcome change that it isn't based on real world events. I like Chillasart's willingness to tackle heavy issues, but every game developer needs to have at least some variety or the bit goes stale, as Jack said at the end. Sorry for the wall of text.

@kylajenson1957 not a problem. Just wanted to make sure if there was something I missed. In rewatching I’m getting Mandela Catalog vibes as well as the religious short from Sean’s most recent compilation. So reimagined religious themes. I do see the work culture influences. Unlike other indie horror, there is no option to leave early for an alternate ending. It could be a subtle way to say the employee does not believe their self preservation is worth more than workplace expectations.

The thing is, they're usually NOT "so high quality", but I think that helps it. I mean, honestly, Chilla's Art games look like a janky mess at least 2/3 of the time, the animations are iffy, transitions are sometimes weird (like any time the camera was picked up in this). But....the fact that they're not trying to make the game look and feel like a high budget AAA game, means they can focus on more important stuff, like the actual plot of the game, the atmosphere, and the scares. And it means less work, so more game releases. It also helps that their setting and plots are usually just...normal stuff, but usually with a twist. So it feels more "real" than it does when it turns out to just be yet another ghost or demon. And the setting's just a real ass looking place. Grocery stores, a cafe, a normal average apartment, a small town. Like, you're not in Silent Hill with the world turning all creepy every 5 minutes, and literal monsters around. You're a person, in a real looking normal place, and creepy real life normal things happen. It gets under your skin a lot more because it feels way more real than actual demons and stuff.

The Japanese word for 'dawdling' is ぐずぐず' (guzu guzu), and he definitely did not say that. However, when translators translate Japanese, they often use context clues in a sentence to translate what's being said in a smooth, contextually appropriate fashion. So ultimately, the sentence utilizing 'dawdling' was really just translated in a way that flowed smoothly and likely with a bit of translation flare from the translator. I hope this helps anyone curious!

General trivia (**spoiler warning for the whole video**): 0:18 Yeah, the title of the game is jisatsu/自撮 (which has the same kanji as jidori/自撮り, meaning "taking a picture or video of oneself; selfie; video selfie"), but it's pronounced in the same way as jisatsu/自殺 (meaning "suicide"). It's an interesting wordplay, since the boy/killer's grandfather committed suicide in the bathtub (see 31:08). 0:47 The boss said botto(suru)/ぼっとする, which translates to "in a daze; absent-mindedly; vacantly; abstractedly; blankly; idly" (that's the corresponding word for "dawdling" in the subtitles). 1:46 The city and prefecture weren't mentioned in Japanese either, so those was probably left out on purpose. 2:40 Tanuki (statues) are a symbol of fortune (large belly), prosperity, but also playful trickery (because of their shapeshifting ability). 5:14 That painting is Christ Crowned with Thorns, by Antonello da Messina. Christianity is rare in Japan, and "Catholic Christians were harshly persecuted during the Edo period (the early 1600s) and driven underground out of fear that Japanese peasants and samurai would feel more loyal to a foreign Pope than their own lord". If the game happened during such persecutions, that would explain why so many Christian symbols were hidden underground (at 36:28). There were also many graves, which indicates people had previously died in the house. 9:15, 9:54 The two lines readable on the right-hand side of the newspaper say "(This) edited footage has been circulating around. The hidden parts..." (in Japanese: "編集された映像が出回る.隠された部分..."). This seems to suggest the censor boxes we see in the video might have been added by the film company who found the original tapes. 9:44 The grandmother was whispering "Why?" (何でなの?) and "How?" (どうして?), but she apparently also said (according to the Japanese youtuber @DreamYroaD ) "How did this happen? It was not supposed to be like this" (どうしてこんなことになってしまったのか。こんなはずじゃなかった). It seems the grandmother was not only lamenting the death of the kid's parents, but she might even know what caused them (and be involved with it). 11:58 "Okay satan, you got it" Funny you said that, since if you concatenate all of the binary codes from the game's Steam achievements and decode them to text, you get "satan/サタン" (I'm not kidding). For anyone who wants to double check it, the binary code is "11100011 10000010 10110101 11100011 10000010 10111111 11100011 10000011 10110011 00001010". 14:55 In Japan, the koi carp (nishikigoi) are kept for decorative/ornamental purposes (they symbolize strength, courage, patience, and success through perseverance). That's why the grandparents reacted negatively to you picking up one of them. 17:54 In Christianity, the fish symbol (Ichthys) represents Jesus Christ, so maybe (given the religious setting) you could interpret the head of the carp as Christ's head. 19:26 The tape says "Jesus" backwards ("suh-sej"). Maybe that chanting is what summons the demon. 22:45 "Adorning the effigy with a lock of the grandmother's hair" might be a reference to Okiku, the haunted Japanese doll that grows human hair. The doll intially belonged to a girl named Okiku, who loved it but suddenly died at the age of 3. Her family noticed that the hair on Okiku's doll had begun to grow, and concluded the restless spirit of Okiku was now inside her beloved doll. 29:48 Japanese superstitions say that crows cawing can be either a good or bad omen, but it's a bad omen (potentially including death) if the crows sound bad or if it happens at night. 31:22 Another Japanese superstition says that cutting fingernails or toenails at night is bad luck, and "if one does so, it is believed that they will not be with their parents at their deathbed". 36:58 Inverted crosses were intially associated with the martyrdom of Peter the Apostle (he requested his cross to be upside down, as he felt unworthy of being crucified in the same manner as Jesus), but they can also be anti-Christian/satanic symbols. 41:03 The painting is The Christ Pantocrator ("ruler of all") of St. Catherine's Monastery at Sinai. The male sculpture was probably supposed to be Joseph holding baby Jesus, but it actually seems (considering the hair) to be St. Anthony of Padua (also holding baby Jesus). The female sculpture is probably (the Virgin) Mary. 45:02 Japan has quite a few "haunted tunnel" stories (like the Kiyotaki Tunnel, the Inukane Pass Tunnel, and the Isegami Tunnel), so that's probably where the horror story trope came from. 48:16 Yeah, it's implied that the killer at the end is the grown-up kid from the tapes (now completely possessed by the demon).

This was really interesting, I like the combo of reality and paranormal horror. I think what was going on was there was some kind of demon, obviously, as we saw it needed sacrifices, obviously, and either the grandparents died of age, or the kid killed them, which would explain the blood, and many years later he lost his precious camera, so once he was an adult and claimed his victim, he took that camera as a subsitute for his own. Still in an endless cycle of carying out tasks for the devil.

I love watching Jack and Gab play Chilla’s Art games. Gab for her translations and explainations of Japanese culture (plus it’s cute when she gets excited to see a design that reminds of her of when she lived in Japan). Jack for his reactions and commentary. I love both of their appreciation for this game studio and their genuine happiness when a new game comes out. ❤

If any of you are curious as to what video jack was referring to at the start of the vid, it was somewhere in the first few episodes of "Scariest Videos on the Internet" The resemblance of that short horror japanese film and the start of this game is basically on point. I wouldnt be surprised if it was actually used as an inspiration for this game.

This has to be one of my favourites from Chilla’s Art, as jack said I enjoyed the change of pace and felt like this story really needed that supernatural element, something about the kid just blindly following instructions with seemly no motivation like he’s on auto pilot is eerie, along with those rural Japanese vibes making it feel completely isolated never fails to be terrifying!

This new trend to explore abandoned houses seems pretty spooky! Especially in rural Asian villages where there is a constant belief in the existence of dark arts and evil spirits. Even if someone offers me a million dollars I would never dare to do this challenge!

There is something about Japanese horror that is so good about getting under your skin. Western horror is mostly just torture and gore p*rn. It doesn't compare. I was just thinking about how many horror games don't delve into the paranormal and instead all the monsters or enemies are all tangible and easy to deal with and don't capture the essence of the terror of the unknown. In horror where the monster is a real threat once you learn how to deal with it, it becomes less scary. This has to be one of my favorite Chilla's art games yet, I love it.
