I sometimes think he does it to keep the flow of the video. The drawing and writing takes a long time. I was watching it live from Jeremy's stream and there was a solid 5-10 minutes where it was just silence because everyone was so focused on drawing.

As such "I smell burnt" is a meme similar to the humour of "I've fallen and I can't get up!" The reason it caught me by surprise is that I've never heard it outside of that context.
