WAIT HOLD UP! 15:20 is an obscure Neopets reference! The misspellings are an intentional part of the joke. For context: at one point in the editorial section of the Neopian Times (an in-universe newspaper filled with user submitted content) the staff were showcasing examples of the rejected submissions they'd received for the caption contest. One of these submissions began with the now infamous "Ahh Mr.sneky i see you are wering your fance top". This line became so memetic it eventually spawned an official item called "fance top" into the game.

@TheStarsTwilight3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the first time Karina typed seemingly random bullshit at 15:20 was actually an obscure Neopets reference. The terrible spelling is an intentional part of the joke. For context: the line comes from when the site's staff showed some examples of rejected entries for the caption contest; one of them began with the now infamous "Ahh Mr.sneky i see you are wering your fance top". This line became such a meme on site that an actual item named "Fance Top" was officially added to the game. The others though... ya that's all Karina. She probably still had the joke on her mind for her initial prompt in the second round and then continued spelling things weird because everyone thought it was funny.

Thank you for calling out that "esk*mo" is a slur. Especially since June is Indigenous History and Pride Month in Canada. For people wondering what to use instead: 1) ideally the specific ethnic group's name (Inuit, Inuktitut, Aleut, etc.), or 2) using a general descriptive terms, like "Arctic Indigenous peoples" and similar Some Arctic folks DO use it as a self-descriptor, but it is a case of a reclaimed slur, so if you don't belong to one of those groups, I'd suggest not using it. Similar with the word "Indian" for North American Indigenous folks. I'm Indigenous and I use "Indian" sometimes to refer to myself/other Native folks, but if I heard a non-Native person using it, it would be a Big Red Flag.

Bump This comment needs more attention because it’s totally true I wish Jacob had acknowledged earlier it rather than just... brush it off.
@anangoohns3 жыл бұрын
@@penbailey9677 Thanks for saying so! I wish so too. And I wish the focus had more been on "Sorry for anyone who belongs to these groups that had to deal with that, even if the person didn't know" rather than "oh they probably didn't mean anything." I know our Drawfee folks are growing and learning themselves, but they unfortunately slipped back into the trap of minimizing the harm for the comfort of the person doing, not the ones affected. I get it, and I know the person probably had no idea. But just because you step someone's foot accidentally, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like hell. I honestly assumed Jacob didn't know either until it was mentioned (unfortunately that's how it goes with Indigenous issues most of the time, especially in the US; I kinda just have to assume everyone is horrifically uninformed or I would be angry constantly at the ignorance) But hopefully people learned from it and are more aware now. I encourage people to take the time to look up ways to be better allies to the Indigenous communities where they live (there are tons of lists/articles online) and do some reading about the history of the specific ways colonization has impacted their area

It's possible the person wasn't a native English speaker and they truly just had no idea.
@anangoohns3 жыл бұрын
@@mcd08 intent doesn't equal impact. Just because they didn't know didn't make it any easier for Indigenous folks to suddenly see a slur pop up. I get that they probably didn't know, I don't doubt that.. That doesn't mean it didn't suck to see. Like I said before: just because you step on someone's foot by accident, that doesn't make it hurt any less.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily a _slur,_ the etymology is somewhat debated but one interpretation, which is almost certainly wrong, offends some people. In general, the term is supposed to refer to arctic peoples, mainly Inuit and Yupik, and should in theory cover what one means (Native folk living in or at the arctic circle), but depending on who you talk to, they might be offended (usually, somewhat misguidedly, on the peoples' behalf), so it is problematic in that sense. In practice, it's simply a term used in ignorance of this "issue", and while a person has a certain duty to inform themselves about the world to some degree, I'm very much against demonizing people who don't know any better about any given thing. A very common trap is to say "Don't call anybody Eskimo," (already somewhat wrong), "...call them 'Inuit'" (equally wrong as a principle, possibly right or wrong in any given case, but usually with a false sense of correctness) I'm not sure what else to say myself, so I tend to say something like "native [to the Arctic, Siberia, Canada...]", which of course is also presumptuous if I'm not certain... In some cases, you might get away with just describing what you see: "Person wearing hide clothing and snow shoes" might be good for things like GarticPhone ^^
@Vox-Multis3 жыл бұрын
@@black_platypus I was also curious about this, having an understanding of the word similar to Mianne's. I looked it up on Wikipedia and, interestingly enough, just typing in "Eskimo" sent me to an article of that name instead of redirecting me. Looking at the discussion page for that article, it appears the reason for that is, as you pointed out, there really is no accepted term that refers exclusively to all of the groups "Eskimo" is used for (I had initially thought it was a non-PC term for "Inuit", but having now read the article I see I was mistaken). And that got me thinking... what _should_ we call the person Jacob drew? Just a man in a fur parka? While that would be technically accurate, it loses something in translation. Do we call him "a person native to the northern reaches of North America"? It's a bit of a mouthful, and besides, is it even an accurate representation of such a person? Really the only term I can think of for Jacob's drawing is "cartoon Eskimo" - an image that may only exist in popular culture that springs to mind when most Americans hear the word "Eskimo". Just as, conversely, I suspect "Eskimo" is the word that would spring to mind for most of us if we were confronted with that drawing without context - even those of us who know better. Like it or not, the word exists, and appears to have a very specific meaning, even if that meaning doesn't directly reference anything that exists in the real world. It's a bit like the Indians in Peter Pan - what do you call them? We can't call them Native Americans, as they don't live on either American continent. They might be an indigenous people, or they might not - I have no idea how they got to Neverland, or if they were always there. So really all we're left with is "Indians" or, if we want to make it clear we're talking about a fictionalized construct based on pre-existing stereotypes, "cartoon Indians" or maybe "Hollywood Indians". To call those particular characters Native Americans for First Nations people would (I would think) be kind of an insult to actual Native Americans. Anyway, I don't know if all of this is useful or helpful to anyone; it's more or less a transcript of my train of thought as I was taking a bath after watching this video. Take it for what you will.
@RebeccaGMR3 жыл бұрын
@@Vox-Multis You call them "Indigenous." It's not hard. Instead of trying to skirt around the issue by trying to find references of where it has been used in popular culture, you need to acknowledge and adjust your social lens. If we looked at Peter Pan, you can see the blatant racist imagery that they've used in depicting an Indigenous person because they are using stereotypes of how European settlers descrived them. The same would be to look at Disney's Pocahontas - they took a tragic real world story and romanticized it. Also it's like the song where they call Indigenous people "savages." Does that mean it's okay to call them that term then? No, because we have acknowledged it to be a derogatory term. I'm not trying to be angry at you, but it is upsetting to see someone try to justify this situation. You don't use the term. You don't try to justify the usage of that term. You acknowledge it was used in the past, and you become aware that you shouldn't use it in current times.
