Started the hottest half of this years batch: Why Not, Madame Jeanette, 7 Pot Primo, Carolina Reaper Chocolate and Sepia Serpent. At least one of each has sprouted (which is what I'm aiming for, I don't have room for more than one of each in the greenhouse for now). Currently running a small fan over them for about a third of the day to encourage stability and keep the temperature down, otherwise I run the risk of them growing faster than I can handle :) They're looking absolutely gorgeous thus far, definitely my least leggy year yet.

My CC Piri Piris all germinated in just 5-6 day. 90% germination rate on Citrons, took around 7-9 days. Yellow Scotch Bonnets took 14-24 days with around 50 percent germination rate. I keep 3-4 plants of each and giving away the rest so I have more then enough but its weird as all off them were in the same propagator so they had same conditions.
@ChilliChump5 күн бұрын
It is expected to get quicker germination with frutescens and annuum compared to chinense. The yellow scotch bonnets like it warmer than the other varieties, especially if you got them from me. I haven't yet stabilised that variety in my climate yet. They will get better with lower temps as I continue to selectively breed them
@Jakub_Firzen_Marek5 күн бұрын
@@ChilliChump Yeah they are from you but Isn't Citron chinense as well? I do germinate them in a kitchen where with a heat map I do manage to maintain 28 degrees Celsius. Anyways I have more then I need so I'm happy :) Next year I should have more then enough seeds from them to just throw as many in trays as I need :)

I've been hitting your videos hard over the last month. Amazing resource, so thank you firstly...(I shall patron you, come payday this Friday!!) I'd understand if you don't want to divulge that info, I'm just interested...I used to work as a teen on a small market garden in the 80's. Again thanks for all your vids.

Hi Shaun can I have some advice? I sowed my Chilli’s, Peppers & Aubergine approx 2.weeks ago on heat indoors. I must have missed 3-4days of checking as suddenly some had appeared but are surprisingly leggy 😢…. I’ve taken them off the heat (albeit still a few to come thru) and put the lights on for 12hrs a day. I’m new to mats/lights so can’t seem to get the growing right at the moment. One minute nothing then suddenly there they are, quite leggy & thin stems. Not little stumpy things I see online…is it worth potting them on or starting a fresh? Thanks and sorry for the garbled message. Please and thanks 🎉
@ChilliChump2 күн бұрын
You need to get light over the sprouts as soon as they germinate. No need to take them off the warmth yet. They are stretching because they need light.
@vanessawilkinson70892 күн бұрын
@ Thanks for such a quick reply. I must have missed a few days of checking for germination, all of a sudden they’d appeared. I’ll get them back on the heat with the lights but think I’ll sow some more as a back-up.

I have been following you for a couple of years now, since i started growing peppers. I am however wondering, why you dont do more hydroponics, instead of the growing in dirt? For all i have found out, hydroponics are cheaper, and grows faster? Most of the time anyway
@ChilliChump5 күн бұрын
A big part of my yearly grow is hydroponic (about a quarter of my plants). I still love growing in soil though. It appeals to my primal side.
@ChilliChump5 күн бұрын
And with regards to it being cheaper,and faster growing. Hydroponics can indeed grow plants faster since nutrients are readily available, and it can sometimes be more water-efficient. However, whether it's cheaper depends-setup costs for pumps, reservoirs, and nutrients can add up, and running costs like electricity need consideration. Hydro also requires close monitoring of pH and nutrient levels, and if something goes wrong, plants can suffer quickly. I enjoy soil growing for its natural resilience and flavour benefits too, but that being said, I do enjoy the experiments and growing I do hydroponically too
@markrasmussen13995 күн бұрын
@ Haha, that is my bad then. I am aware of the massive pepperplant you and peppergeek grew, but other than that i havent noticed much hydroponics... Is that just me not paying attention or are you not showing them as much?
