Met a beautiful girl in a bar in Sydney CBD on NYE one year back in the 90's. She was from Melbourne so we exchanged numbers and vowed to keep in touch (only home phones and office numbers back then) and went our separate ways. We sent each other dozens of faxes each day after that (much to the annoyance of our respective employers) and spoke to each other over the phone for hours each night after arriving home. I'd send her a dozen red roses every week and she'd send me boxes in the mail, always filled with loads of goodies. We were madly in love and couldn't bear to be apart any longer so I moved to Melbourne. This was our song, along with a few other Air Supply songs and a few by Chicago. She was a corporate high flyer but she always made time for me and we'd drive along the Great Ocean Road as often as possible, stopping along the way and listening to her Air Supply cassette as we talked about our love for each other, among other things. Long story short....things didn't pan out too well and we began to argue a lot. Our arguments were usually over her brother, who'd suffered a brain injury as a result of a car crash and relied heavily on her and couldn't live alone. Whenever we had a bad fight, she'd tell me it was over and that I should go home to Sydney. I always did fly back to Sydney but whenever I did, I'd hear an announcement over the P.A. on the plane, requesting that I approach the Chief Purser upon landing. It was actually really romantic - the message was always the same: Your girlfriend has paid for a return flight to Melbourne. Here are the flight details....etc etc. The last time I flew back to Sydney I knew right there and then that I wouldn't hear that announcement, as I had before whenever we argued and I flew home to Sydney. I never saw her again and we didn't keep in touch but I've followed her career over the years. She made it big and I'm really happy for her and I have no regrets whatsoever. And although she doesn't often come into my thoughts these days, I always think of her whenever I hear this song especially.

Just saw a rerun of someone singing it at the show where they have the judges and I could not believe how they all cried especially one of the male judges....he just broke down...everyone else was also crying. So nostalgic listening to this 80’s song…our brain is so amazing that it remembers and triggered flashbacks of the good younger years. I miss my teen years so much. I am grateful my mother allowed me freedom to enjoy and attend all my school dances. Thanks mom for not being strict. I grew up happy and love music and was never shy about expressing my excitement for music. I love dancing and never cared if people were watching. Music made me feel like I was in my own world.

This song has always baffled me--what DID they mean by making love out of nothing at all? Manufacturing love that didn't exist? I clearly never listened deeply to the lyrics because I just realized the point of all the braggadocio (including claims of manipulation) has to do with never letting his soft underbelly show to anyone else until now. This is summed up at 3:40. This is someone who has put on a front to the world but is painfully insecure deep inside, loves this woman deeply and can't believe his good fortune that she somehow loves him, despite all his flaws and her incredible beauty and gifts. Does anyone else read this the same way?

Steinman was a very underrated songwriter, but the man sure knew where to find talent to bring his songs to vivid life, and that's why his songs are, in my opinion, the reason why the word CLASSIC exists; cause speaking of which I would have killed to hear Meat Loaf sing his rendition of this song, and his rendition of Bonnie Tyler's immortal hit TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART; I'm sure he would have killed singing these two Steinman classics in only the way Meat Loaf could. So maybe in some alternative reality, I'm pretty sure Meat's covers of these songs exist somewhere. God bless and God speed Jim Steinman; may you rest and rock in peace maestro.
