Here's a solution to the mold and dust issues with feeding horses round bales...

If you don't already, I suggest using vegetable oil in place of petroleum based bar and chain oil, since the horses will be eating it.

Ive cut a many round bales but I cut them cross ways....... much easier ! And......use a hand grinder and remove every other cutting blade and tab from the chain. Id say its easier to feed round bales then square bales because you dont need to carry them. Just fork the hay to the horse.......as needed. Cover the remaining with a tarp. Works is done ! Sad people cant think that far in advance though. Round bales are much cheaper then square bales ! Per pound

Your 100% right.......been feeding 4x4 foot round bales for year....to my calves. Forget the square bales ! Also......you ever try putting the chain in the saw backwards ??? Give it a try !

I hadn't thought of that. We normally peel the crust before putting out a new bale so the horses don't get exposed to the mold. Then I ran across this idea. Less to scrape up in the spring I suppose...

I had some wet round bales which froze up and tried with the chainsaw and gave up after 15 minutes. The hay kept jamming up chainsaw. Thats my experience.

Thats why hes suggesting to use only the top of the blade to cut with.....so the hay dont recycle through the bottom plugging it

I would have took all that hay you scrapped and threw it in my garden to compost. Or folded it in on itself a few times to plant potatoes in. 🤷‍♀️

If this was for feeding cows I'm just going to say you wasted prolly 25 percent of that bale. Horses must be a bit complaining if that's the way they eat. I can literally see 20 left over from a previous bale behind you. If you want to waste try feeding for days. If you want efficiency and save money feed per day in a feeder. Old water tote carriers are good feeders for like 100$. Laying hay on ground invites an animal to bed in it.

I did not. Biggest thing I found out is cutting away on top of bar so hay doesn't pack in the saw. And pulling it out and revving it to lube the chain. It will bog down because the hay dries out the chain...

The horses can still waste it with them being able to poop and pee in it. The whole idea we want to cut it up for is to take little bits at a time to them.

The cost of processing hay in this bales especially this round ones seems to me just to high, and looks to me unjustified. Hay used to be stored raw in barns, using nothing than basic tools, now you need dozens of dollars of equipment and much trouble for the same result of feeding your cattles.

Can make life simple and just park the bale near the yard where you want to feed it and toss the hay to the animal each day. Cover the remaining with a tarp and place a few rock on it so it dont blow off. No different then carrying a square bale from the mow.
