Can confirm. Watching the screen stop and go blank while hearing the first note _is_ an instant brain-gasm. And I always hit my desk to the beat of the tally music at the end. Also, I don't know if you're aware that Obra Dinn was made by the same person who made Papers, Please (Lucas Pope). The dude really knows what he's doing.

That makes so much sense. Dude's a genius.

Such a success chime doesn't have to be particularly complex, either. In many puzzles in the series "The Room", successfully solving something is quite often rewarded with a loud click, followed by something starting to move.

There's also just something about the long break in between the chords. But yes, it is incredibly satisfying.

Hey, thank you so much for recording this. Obra Dinn in my eyes is a master class of how to make a detective game with compelling "detective mechanics" (i.e. "solving the mystery" mechanics) - surprising considering Obra Dinn isn't _really_ a detective game in the traditional sense - and it is helped in no small part by the journal that keeps track of the fates and, most importantly, the feedback given on success. To add to your video, analysing the jingle that plays in isolation to the rest of the soundtrack doesn't give a full context to the analysis. The jingle itself is a variation on a leitmotif that makes an appearance in multiple soundtracks throughout the game, a particularly major one being the game's main theme. To that end, it would be quite useful to compare and contrast the differing cameos of the leitmotif and the contexts in which they appear to really explore what makes the leitmotif tick and build an "associative map" of what the leitmotif represents and how it achieves this through the context and the musical structure itself. Only then can we really properly explore what makes the success jingle work and how it has a knock on effect for most of the rest of the soundtrack and the gamplay too. Now that's obviously a lot of work, and you said yourself that you're not really a music guy so I'm not faulting you for it or anything. Just something to keep in mind if you ever go on to analyse another game that has a particularly prominant and interlinked soundtrack, say Moonlighter for example. I'd do it myself, but it really is a _lot_ of work researching and investigating, and my music theory chops are quite rusty and I don't think I could do it justice - maybe a good video topic for the 8bit Music Theory channel. Overall, good video and I'll be sure to keep an eye on your channel from now on.

(Spoilers) I played this whole game with friends completely blind, and we were always so hype whenever we got a new set done; The melody is such a great way to bookmark your progress. I think one of my favorite moments in a game was when we had two of the Chinese topmen as the last two people, and after running in circles trying to find a way to find out who was who forever, one of my friends said "Wait what if they have different looking shoes" as a joke and then that was the solution. Another really great moment is seeing Abigail's death for the first time and being like "oh she got crushed by rigging" and then turning around and realizing that there was a Kraken there. The way the Kraken is perfectly framed to be out of view during the whole intro but appears soon as you start moving the camera around (probably after you've already been looking at the original shot for a bit) is great.

(Also Spoilers here) I always love watching let's plays of the game and the guaranteed two times the person will be gob-smacked. First is with the kraken out of frame, and the second seeing the soldiers of the sea through the window in the wall. Even after the supernatural is proven with the watch and kraken, they'll still get caught off-guard seeing a giant crab-man.

Those solo devs who write music for their own game really make audio into the narrative really well. Like Cave Story or UNDERTALE.

As much as I don’t like Obra Dinn, I really dig this video! This is how one should analyze a videogame, staying on-topic meanwhile not trying to cover the thing holistically but rather choosing a particular lens through which you gave us - the viewers - a deeper sense of understanding your interpretation of an element of this game’s design. I also really love your inclusion of those piano bits in there, I dig your sense of humor 😂 Keep it up ⬆️

Strange hand posture while playing the piano is normal. "Normal" hand posture while playing the piano is abnormal, and quite possibly counterproductive.

I'm kinda sad I ended up completely stuck at some point in the game and spoiler myself some of it by looking it up, and I realized I never would have figured it out because some of things you have to look for were things I didn't even think could be things I had to pay attention to or they were things I was physically unable to see because of the artstyle combined with my poor vision. The game was extremely good but because everything that was left unsolved for me was near the end (kinda forced by design) it kinda ended on a sour note.
