Build With A&E

During this episode of our Regency Renovation project, we start off showing you the great job that has been done on repairing and renovating the chimney stacks. There is detailed footage of the flaunching and fitting the vented chimney caps. John takes you on a tour inside the house to bring you up to date with progress and we show the fitting of some helibars. Finally we get to see the process of installing the wood burner which involves the tricky task of fitting the chimney flue liner.
A huge thank you to our show sponsors, MKM Building Supplies. We highly recommend you check out their website for all your construction material needs!

PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on work schedules.

Really had to think hard on commenting on the video. I cannot stress enough that I am not criticising or saying its wrong. However the way you have installed the woodburner, can be improved. - Installing the liner from top down, gives better control over liner movements. - Going through the house the liner is more likely to cause damage, also has less movements. - Any obstructions caused by the liner, result in having to remove liner. Whereas top down, any obstruction will fall out. - Assistance from gravity pulling down. Pulling up is fighting against gravity. - Far more control over debris and soot/dust. - Use chimney wrap instead of vermiculite. Cannot stress the one enough! Vermiculite does not work properly, nor do the rockwool wraps! - Create a 3 piece register plate instead of a pre made. Two reasons, almost no 2 chimneys are the same creating your own gives you loads of freedom. Making it in 3 pieces allows you to have side plates, these are perfect for inspection or cleaning out any debris or old soot that can fall down. To be honest there are more but I don't want to just sound like I'm picking holes, nor to sound like i am saying the install is wrong. Because it isn't! This is just some friendly advice from someone who has been in the industry for a long time. If you have questions/ want me to explain further, don't hesitate! Love the videos! Best wishes & kind regards, Greg Wargen.

Good video again, lads. One point of info for anyone else planning to reline their own chimney is that there is a right and wrong way up to the liner.....i.e, direction the overlap of the liner material is facing. Most liners have the direction of insertion printed on the outside of the liner, but not all. This is when installers experience is invaluable!.....if it's upside down it will still work OK but won't last very long and any manufacturers warranty will be invalid.

Things don’t always go to plan, but only minor in the grand scheme of things. The c cap looks a great solution to venting a disused chimney, so many damp issues caused by blocking them off. Love the lead detail on the slate roof .

Things to remember with flue liners, always measure diameter of the chimney all the way down before pulling one in. Seen companies go bankrupt cause they've pulled one in that's been slightly too big for a couple brick layers in a chimney, the snag had caused all the plaster and brickwork on the internal wall to come out - sadly into a library causing quite a bit of damage. It's far better to put a smaller liner in with a fan flue on the top of the chimney pot than to write off anyone's work and possibly cause structural damage to the chimney and adjoining rooms. Great video as always lads!
@rhysevans7903
@rhysevans7903 4 жыл бұрын
Out of interest how do you measure the diameter inside a chimney??
@baldyslapnut.
@baldyslapnut. 4 жыл бұрын
@@rhysevans7903 one way is to pull/lower a smaller length (1-1.5m) of the liner you intend to use down the chimney to see if it clears. Put a nose cone top and bottom. Not a guaranteed accurate method but it puts you in the ball park. Getting 200mm liner down a 9" chimney has been one of my more challenging jobs. Had to take 3 bricks out in a loft to help pull liner past two bends.

What a crew! I see no weakness at all. The last vid with exterior render work was crazy good. Elements board! Uncoupling membrane (shluter)! You got all my previous minuscule concerns of mine covered. Ya man below is 100% correct tho. Liners should always be dropped where possible. Only started house bashing and plumbing in the 90's but the old school guys who trained me and I've actually done a score of back boilers myself explained the reasons why. Wheres the plant room vid!!!??? :)

I enjoy watching your videos as they are always informative. The covers for the disused chimney pots look like a good idea to allow ventilation. Where a chimney is closed, do you still need to use a vent at the bottom? A picture would be really useful. Thanks.

Always impressed with all your work. Must admit the tiny screw fixing into plastic on the caps looked a little naff especially once metal stays were put under pressure and with uk weather making the plastic brittle it’s not an easy fix if they pop down the line

I'm not one to question or criticize or bark orders but it would seem installing the chimney liners would have been the logical step before installing and sealing around the chimney pots up top?

Hi T Bag as a rule the pots always go on first but mine is not to ask the reason why, thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome week
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi T Bag, The installation process is completed in this order for a few reasons, and there are many things to consider when installing. Once the liner is in, the cowel needs to be fitted, which cannot be done without the pot in place. In many circumstances, vermiculite needs to be poured down the chimney to insulate and prevent condensation forming in the liner. The whole thing then needs to be sealed, as vermiculite shouldn't be allowed to get wet. What happened here was unfortunate, and a rate occurrence. Hope this helps. All the best, John 😊

What is with all these wood burning stoves??? I see them in every renovation program. Surely they are very eco-unfriendly and an electric one would be better???
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lila I think there are a lot more pressing issues as the deforestation, plastic contamination, sea levels risings, river poisonings around the world, than maybe a wood burner. Please I do not take anything lightly about are beautiful planet we as people and are leaders should be doing a lot more and we are all trying to do as much as we can in are little way but it not enough the only country I can see really being carbon neutral is Iceland, if you watch the Netflix Zac Efron series just recently put up it tells a great story of the world issues we have like a basic human right for clean water look at what France have done regarding this issue which then has a massive results with plastics not being used. Thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have bc a awesome week

If you need a high kw for the room an electric one would be about 2kw and I would guess totally inadequate as well as expensive to run.
