Note that this is being built in Mississippi, with a Texas-proven design. In northern Illinois we have a freeze/thaw cycle. With respect, I’m not sure how well this foundation would do over time up here. I would consider doing it fence post style in concrete, below the freeze line.

How about a simpler, temporary tower to tie on the northside of your disused summer chimney?

Excellent video. Thanks for posting. Wondering if there is a issue with mold growing on the interior of the T1-11 plywood as it is left unfinished and rain can enter. Mold did grow on the interior of my partially enclosed shed constructed of T1-11.

Could anyone tell me about how many bags of concrete mix and bag weight I would need in order to complete the foundation slab?

the book says twenty 80 pound bags of concrete mix

Awesome tower. But looks like it would cost a small fortune in materials.

8:10 - I love that these guys are doing this, but "perfectly vertical using a framing level?" These birds live inside hollow trees. Make the thing as irregular as you want. It will be more like home. Mine has been very successful using an 8' long, two-foot diameter cardboard tube that I weatherproofed from the outside and lined with twigs stapled on the inside. ;-)

Leveling the tower is simply an esthetic choice. I mean it would look a bit off in your yard because the building material you are using is square and straight. I have used hollow trees planted in the ground. To each their own, .....I'm sure everyone would equally appreciate a leaning chimney swift tower of pisa. :)

@@mozdedo I had not considered the Zen Master way. I apologise, master. ;-)

Without video connections, it will only run about $550. Of course, one can lower the cost by finishing the outside with recycled wood. This tower is tried and true design that works, so it is worth the money.
