Chin Rest on Towel After Drinking

I saw a gorgeous Cane Corso online showing off their awesome trick of chin resting on a towel after drinking water. This not only avoids the Slip'n'Slide that Mastiffs create near any water source but also improves skin hygiene as their chins are not always wet and sloppy for bacteria to grow.
Here's how I am training David Growl to do the same trick. I have yet to build my own pedestal so unfortunately I did not get to completely replicate the original creator in this video🤗
For this training I used:
- His meal
- A teatowel
- A strap
- An empty dog bowl
- A clicker
I recommend having a stash of their meal allowance within the human's reach of the water bowl. This way, a handler can watch their dog go and drink water on their own, then follow it with their new pretrained cue to chin rest on the towel and instantly mark and reward. Repeated enough times with enough consistently good rewards for the dog, the behaviour may become habitual and be continued over the years.

As per the original video, you will need to supervise the dog drinking and immediately after the drink is finished, cue the new trick of resting the lips on the towel, then release and reward. If you are consistently cueing and rewarding after every drink, it will slowly become more and more habitual until the dog starts doing it every time

I just used a strap that came with a treat pouch but you can get 2-5 dollar adjustable straps from your local hardware store, use a nylon collar, rope, bungee cord, anything👍

Its not about splashing out of the bowl. Mastiffs and other dogs with loose jowls store water in their cheeks and folds and as they walk away, LITRES of it pours out over the floor, often causing 10ft+ of tracking puddle. Even after this, they can walk over to a person and with their mouth and chin still soaking wet and really gross, slime all over furniture and clothes, or simply shake their heads and spray the cieling with large slugs of drool😅 many mastiff owners have teatowels around the house to minimise drool and water spray - a towel chin rest after drinking an easy addition to help😁

Dogs eat off the ground. They're animals. Wolves eat off the ground where their dead prey is. If you are wanting your dogs to not scavenge, train them. Train a leave it, train a let go, train a carcass retrieval if you're into hunting... even muzzle train to completely prevent scavenging if you don't have the time/skills to train bomb proof food refusal. I can trust my dogs to drop/leave alone a carcass and recall on a single cue while off leash because I've trained them. I can recall them mid chase from prey too :) training goes a long way. Personally I think the trend pretending that dogs not eating allowed food off the ground will prevent the same dogs scavenging food/rubbish/offal they aren't allowed isn't worth losing sleep over🤷‍♀️🤗

@@therealdavidgrowl8337 Of course it depends on the lifestyle of the owner. I have a six month old Doberman and you can imagine my constant anxiety over him eating random crap off the ground. Even with the "leave it" command he can get into something before I even have the opportunity to notice. You know how it is.
