Wouldn't it be better to take the cube root of both terms so that we get x - 8 = -2?

(x-8)³=-8=-2³ Euler's function ... (x-8/2)³=-1 = e^((1+2n)π) n=0,1,2, ... cube root => (x-8)/2 = e^(iπ/3), e^(iπ), e^(i5π/3) =(1+i√3)/2, -1, (1-i√3)/2 x= 9±i√3 or 6

..yes, u can solve it easily in ur head just... i agree some more complex problems would be fun, but maby not for the gray mass.... ..as teaching examples...thay aren that awful...
