Initially there is a great competition in terms of retail trade from the Chinese who set up shops in Africa to compete with local traders. The Africa Government to set regulation that a foreign retailers must have a local partnership. It will certainly prevent fierce competition. Surely, in thinking about risk, we need to differentiate short-term vs long-term. Private American companies think short-term because they are answerable to their shareholders on a yearly basis. They need business-conducive conditions now. But Chinese investment is government by China which can forgo short-term profit for long-term gain. In the long-term there is substantial hope that the conditions will change partly because of the infrastructure investment. With good infrastructure comes trade and an opportunity for economic prosperity. A lot of unknown still lies ahead. But at least all that is possible if the investor has patience. However in recent years, the West is badmouthing China and many African politicians have fallen prey to such bad propaganda. African should judge China from its historical record and judge if China is a friend in need. As regards to allegation that China will take over projects if the loan is not repaid. This applies too to finance from the West who too will foreclose on assets for bad loans. The onerous is for the borrower to make sure that the project is viable and not compromise their ability to pay. Mind you that there are politicians who are self serving than work for their country.
