Indeed, and learning to sweep rather than playing straight into the cymbal will help even more with this.

@@FMarinDMtbh Chinas are just kinda prone to breaking depending on how much you use it but if you swipe through it will reduce the chances a lot

Well, the title is "Which way SHOULD you play them". I think it's safe to say china cymbals should be played the way Ben showed, and you see pretty much everyone else with them like that. However, just like with anything else on the drums, it's so highly customizable and very personal. I suppose this video was made for beginners who probably really had no idea which way to put it and might not yet know exactly which sound or feel they want, so in that case it's probably best to put it the way that destroys less sticks. Either way, have a nice day!

More likely to keyhole the centre with them upside down, more choked too.. If you strike them with a swiping motion right side up won’t wear your sticks too badly.

@austinchoatedrums7 жыл бұрын
chun-wei kang that's the only one tho. When you look at the history of the China on drum set, the traditional position was flange up allowing multiple playing zones and better articulation. Now its the norm to crash a china, thus inverting logos.

chun-wei kang The cymbal you want is most likely called a "swish" or a "swish-knock". It would have rivets in it to give it a sizzle, and it is generally quite large.

Your cymbal might even live a while longer being "upside down" because not only does the edge facing up eat into the stick (and/or your skin ^^), but always hitting it right on the edge often increases the chance of early uncool evil cymbal breakage of doom. ;-)

Hey guys, I have an older Sabian China that I used to play, right-side up. This is interesting, and I've seen a lot of comments about other players that have done this. I'm currently rejuvenating my kit to teach the young'uns. I took note of the comment by Jonathan Doe about keyhole in the bell, and this is also my first concern. Does anyone else have info to add about the premature wear of the bell by using this method? I'm open to try it but I don't want t destroy a very valuable cymbal in the process. Asking for me, not a friend.

I think this is definitely the right way to orient your china if you play heavier styles of music, but I seem to remember a video from a well known drummer (can't remember who, but they were old-school in terms of their setup and style) where they recommend you set up your china the other way around because particular chinas can also work really well as ride or swish cymbals and from memory the demo they played sounded fantastic. If anyone has seen a video like that it's probably the one I'm talking about, it might have been on the drummers world, drumeo or modern drummer KZbin channels if that's any help to anyone.
@gabejohnston15567 жыл бұрын
How could you not mention that the cymbal is far more at risk of being broken when you play it with the lip curving up? That seems THE most obvious reason. If you put your crashes upside down so your were constantly hitting perpendicular to the edge, you would break them far faster. Obviously. It's not rocket science. And the 'curved part' is called the bow, genius.
@BenMinal7 жыл бұрын
+Gabe Johnston chill out dude I've already said that in previous videos and I recommended here that people play them with the bow facing up, so I don't see why you need to get so heated about it.
