China, Hollywood, & the Competition for Global Influence

China’s global ambitions extend from the South China Sea to the screens of Hollywood. From ensuring that China will never appear as a villain, to driving self-censorship on the studio lots of the biggest film studios, Beijing is dramatically changing what audiences see on the big screen and streaming networks, alike. Erich Schwartzel in his new book “Red Carpet: Hollywood, China & the Global Battle for Cultural Supremacy” explores how Beijing is seeking to co-opt and, at the same time, out-compete Hollywood to spread the Chinese Communist Party’s message and shape the world’s view of China.
