As a Hong Kong citizen, I can tell you that Hong Kong cannot be independent from China. Not that I’m against it, but we don’t have the ability to. It is true that there’s a huge flaw in our legislative system. The party supporting China in our Legislative Council will win the argument no matter what citizens or other parties say. Do you know how the chief executive is “selected”? The Chinese government chooses puppets they deem suitable and tell Hong Kong citizens to “vote”. We’re just trying to pick the best out of the worst. We want universal suffrage, that’s why there’s the umbrella movement. But it only brought chaos, triggering China to become more controlling over Hong Kong. As students we learn about Hong Kong and China during Liberal Studies class. When we attempt to ask our teacher about touchy topics, all she can do is smile sadly and say we don’t have a choice. That’s right, Hong Kong doesn’t have a choice, we depend too much on China. Other country leaders might be supporting Hong Kong but many citizens know, if Hong Kong becomes independent from China, no country can nor will help us. China is too strong. The 64 incident already proves how China can “alter” reality. After the 20th anniversary of returning to China, we Hong Kong can only dread the future ahead of us. I’m only speaking for a portion of Hong Kong people, don’t be offended if your opinions are different.

@Alan Xue True that Macao is rather rich for the casinos that were built and operated for decades. Yet the importance of HK is not to be diminished. For a city that holds the title for being a recognized financial center that possesses a relatively prestigious education system, trading centre but most importantly the only source to convert currency from RMB to USD for trading purposes, it's clear and goes without saying that HK and Macao are 2 cities that are incomparable. Still Importance of hk would remain to be prior to that of macao.

@Alan Xue macao is a rich and peaceful place you say? you might want to reconsider the chosen words of yours. For a place that stays afloat with their reliance being based on the entertainment sectors like the aforementioned casinos. And if I remembered correctly, most of the projects that includes the participation of both cities would often have their bills paid by HK

To make things even more complicated, PRoC has declared it itself being a country 70 years ago (1949). I care! I think it's great that Hong Kong isn't simply allowing China to walk all over them, and I think it is really upsetting that China has overwhelmingly greater power... I can't say I know the solution, but I at least want to hear from people living it!

Sorry for spotting an issue in this video: It is overly simplistic to say "Hong Kong's evening new speaks Mandarin". The full picture is this: The Hong Kong evening news programme mentioned in this video is produced by TVB (Television Broadcasting Co), which has two main channels, Jade and Pearl. Jade is a Cantonese-oriented channel whereas Pearl is an English-oriented channel. At 6:30 pm, Jade airs the Cantonese version of the news programme while Pearl airs the Mandarin version. Pearl also airs the English version at 7:30 pm. As a majority of Hong Kong's population is Cantonese-speaking, it can be said that the Cantonese version is the most-watched one. The Mandarin version could be targeted to immigrants from Mainland China. The English version targets an English-speaking audience consisting of expats, domestic helpers from ASEAN countries (mainly Philippines and Indonesia) and immigrants from the South Asian sub-continent (India, Nepal, Pakistan etc).

I noticed that immediately. I visit Hong Kong monthly and there is plenty of Cantonese language news and other programming available in Hong Kong. The Mandarin programming is for the large number of Mandarin speakers living there now, as you rightly point out.
@canto_v125 жыл бұрын
That part really misled the audience. Hong Kong's news media is still OVERWHELMINGLY Cantonese. The Mandarin/Putonghua programming is for new immigrants who have not learned Cantonese. Even the written media uses Cantonese words which will throw off a native Mandarin speaker. A glaring oversight--I hope it was not intentional.
@A.i.r_K3 жыл бұрын
As a local, majority of news are still Cantonese. Mandarin aren't on tv 24/7. We did see an increase in Mandarin news, but it seems it has died down decently, or my tv has been off for a little too long

The video should have also mentioned many HKers know Mandarin and regularly consume Mainland content. Perhaps it should also make clear most of the population come from the mainland and there are many Cantonese speakers in the Mainland.

I live in Shenzhen, right next to the border between mainland China and Hong Kong and I’ve crossed this border many many times and even though it seems like China is trying to erase the border, China is much more strict about the border crossing then Hong Kong. Basically the border is separated into two sides, you have to go through Chinese immigration as well as Hong Kong immigration in order to cross the border. The Chinese immigration is much stricter about letting people through (ex: if you’re crossing the border by car to go to Hong Kong you must leave the car and cross the border by foot, but if you’re going to China from Hong Kong you can stay in your car). So China wants to slowly take control over Hong Kong and make Hong Kong feel like it’s Chinese but they are definitely not trying to erase the border, they are trying to reinforce the border. Another thing is that China definitely doesn’t want anyone to know about Tiananmen Square, anytime there is information about it on TV, the screen goes black (I was watching BBC on my tv in China and when there was a documentary about Tiananmen Square, the screen went completely black) They are extremely strict about what information is spread to Chinese people (for example we were supposed to read George Orwell’s animal farm in school but couldn’t because it got banned in China), and being someone who has lived in Shenzhen for so many years I feel scared to talk about things like Tiananmen Square because the government is so controlling about the information that is spread in China and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this video was banned in China as well. In 2047 when Hong Kong will officially be a part of China there is no doubt that a lot of conflict will arise because people from Hong Kong will essentially lose their freedom of speech and their culture is very different from that of China.

Alex Y In terms of these things, like free press and free speech, it's bad. But your life won't be only filled with all these "freedom" stuff, do you? Many Chinese people and foreigners are rather apolitical, and in many other aspects of life, China is doing pretty good especially in Eastern China and Tier-1/2 cities.

At the end of your comment, you actually wrote " culture is very different from that of China." Come on, you've lived for so many years in Shenzhen and how did you come to this absurd conclusion? Either you know nothing about Chinese culture, or you don't actually stay in China for that long...Many people in Hong Kong have relatives in Shenzhen. And many Shenzhen citizens fled to Hong Kong during 1950-1980, so why the hell would the people from both sides have VERY DIFFERENT CULTURE? I mean, how different could that be? About Tiananmen Square event, that was definitely a tragedy. The Western media has shown tons of videos which captured Chinese soldiers firing weapons. BUT, have you ever seen any video which shows the so called peaceful protesting students killing the soldiers brutally? Do you know how many soldiers were beaten to death, or set on fire, or shot by guns which were taken from them? I guess you don't. You know why? Because the Western media only shows how brutal and heartless the Chinese army was. And on the other side, the Chinese media only wanted to tell its people how violent and brutal these protesters were. So to get the full truth of that terrible event, you have to see things from BOTH sides. If the chaos didn't end and China became a so-called democratic country, would things really be better for the people? I don't think so. Just see what happens to the people of Russia and the economy of the country after the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s. So we're lucky that we didn't end up like Russia. But that doesn't mean we're not sorry for the people who lost their lives during that tragic event on June 4th, 1989. Those young people wanted the country to be better but they did it in a wrong way and ended up paying their lives for it.

This comment is just pointing out Shenzhen isn’t the city people used to think it was and Shenzhen is growing at a tremendous rate.

"the Opium Wars." Honestly, I feel like that jab at China was intentional. If you want your message to be meaningful, it has to have something for all parties. In fact, as 2047 is the hard deadline where all of this stops mattering anyways, this means the only opinion that matters is, actually, mainland China's. By evading that, they've probably just nullified any potential value of this video.
