Engineer here, it's not that the cities are "too heavy," it's that they haven't done erosion management and proper foundations. You can build huuuuge structures if you build a foundation going down to the bedrock. Practical engineering has done a good video on it.

This has nothing to do with weather, and everything to do with corruption. I lived in China for 10 years and the corruption even in Xian the city I worked was terrible. Double reduction policy meant we weren't allowed to teach English or over Summer and Winter holidays. But my school was clearly bribing officials and didn't care about the government policies. I left China because the school management didn't care and we're putting foreign staff and students at risk of scrutiny from the government. They are still doing it disregarding "laws". This is why everything in China will SINK, because corruption is rampant, and I saw it first hand. They're a disgusting country that doesn't care about anybody or anything.

15 years ago I predicted that China's most devastating, expensive problem of the 2020s would be infrastructure collapsing and degrading. Here we are. At that time I was new to China's mainland and one of the things that surprised me was just how little regard they have for flood damage. Chinese actually have strange ideas around water and think it just cleans by 'sitting'. You'll see many 'clean' floors by simply bathing it in a coat of water and letting it sit until it evaporates. Actually 'standing water' is a big problem across SE Asia too where they just don't seem to believe it helps mosquito borne illnesses or they don't care. China PRC is terrible for this cavalier thing too and when our streets flooded I announced we'd want to move because... because I know full well it caused absolute carnage to all the pipes and electricals from rust to mud damage to dislodging PVC pipes and then the absolutely vomit-inducing toxic stink up elevator shafts was indeed from water festering rubbish and oils and chemicals that washed up in the basement and so on. I am still convinced the building is 'leaning' by a few degrees. everyone says its an optical illusion. Oh, yes all those things happened btw. massive time and crews spend months routinely tearing up streets to repair what was from that flooding. That's massive expense spent on that. Its not free, that costs Chinese their wealth. and yep, a sinkhole opened up right outside a restaurants front doors, big enough to drop a human into the basement below. They put some red tape around it and later some workers clumped cement and bricks to cover it up. nice big clumps of cement like 3rd graders making clay bowls clumpage.

At shool in shanghai we had an geologist explain to us during a conference that the buildings built in Pudong (the big towers) where built on 80 m deep soft soil due to the yangtze, and that to remedy the issue they had built massive concrete slabs to keep the towers straight, when they built the Shanghai Tower they had to extend the IFC tower slab and it wasn't made for it. The guy told us that the slabs were never deep enough and that the buildings might show some movement in the next 50 years.

Something you see on a side view of nearly every sinkhole: dirt on the bottom, gravel in the middle, pavement on top... However the gravel layer is usually 4 to 8 inches thick. In the usa the gravel layer is 2 to 4 feet thick for small roads, and much thicker for big roads. I don't know if adding more gravel to their road bases would help, but it is a very obvious difference.
@B.D.E.

Those sinkholes are caused by water erosion under all of that material. More gravel wouldn't help. They need to stop building on floodplains and manage ground water flow.

One day I went down and the store was gutted in a remodel. The external windows were pulled so I could see inside. The floor was pulled out. There was no foundation, just packed ground. There were 6 to 8 steel girders (for the store area) inserted lengthwise down directly into the ground, no cement or other support, as columns. Those girders held up the upper floors.

In late October 2000, the UK experienced the wettest autumn in 200 years, with five of the major rivers, bursting their banks. Gusts of 93mph battered the country leaving thousands of homes without power and more than 10,000 homes and businesses were flooded at 700 locations. It was estimated that the cost of the damage was £1 billion. To my knowledge, no one died and no homes were demolished or became uninhabitable. The Brits love to complain especially about the weather but really have no idea how half the world lives, or does not at all well, as the case may be. If we do experience bad weather only a few may die and very little permanent damage is done. These are known as the Blessed Isles for a reason.

No opposition voice, is what ruining China. We in India have witnessed what damage a single party ruling can do, in the form of small parties like communists doing in some states. Thank God we have a process of changing those people in five years. In South India the culture is changing govt every five years and Govt are compelled to think for people. In national level even the party of size of BJP or Congress are not sure what will happen to them in next five years. So the system in China though seem to be foolproof but the reports coming out sporadically hint to the same thing as we witnessed for some small states in India.

Drainage has always been bad, in southern cities you can see the sea if it rains heavily for three days in a row! People are used to it, no one complains because it's always been like that, and it's not profitable to build a good drainage system 😄 but it's profitable to build tall buildings!

We had an issue with my grandmother's house. The house itself has strong but rather shallow foundations, but is a combination of stones and bricks, held together by sand mortar, and is therefore not that heavy. Over time we started getting flooded, because the lowest room on the first floor was located under the actual ground level. Turned out that over time water would dig through the clay underneath the house and would actually make a hole through the concrete floor in the lowest room, springing out like a tap. To resolve this, we dug almost 2 m deep around the house, close to half of the house's actual height, and not only reinforced the foundations with concrete, but created a drainage system to take the excessive water out of the house. To do all that, it cost us a fortune, for a single old family house. Ultimately, to build a house, you don't just need the men and materials. You need experts to check the ground underneath to make sure it is suitable for building, to make the necessary measurements to make sure the thing will last, to see how deep the foundation has to be, in order to hold the weight of that house, and even make it deeper. Also, you need to make sure you select the proper materials and build the house in such a way, so you can not only make a good and long-lasting project, but also avoid any issues such as indoor flooding and excessive humidity buildup. The latter will cause mould and respiratory illnesses in you and your children, and you don't want that. I bet the Chinese authorities didn't do any of these things.

Many third world countries just build where they want without doing a geophysical survey that needs to be done to see what type of soil you are building on. Is it clay, silt, gravel, sand, etc., Are there big water resivours under the ground that will eventually be pushed to the side and the ground overhead sinks. That's why it is so important to do geophysical surveys and to compact the ground in layers to a minimum of 95% density prior to building on top of it. That, and to calculate the weight of the structures footprint, pounds per square inch (PSI), etc.
