The discrimination originates from the gap between developed countries and developing world instead of skin color! Chinese people or most Asian lookup to those white skin people simply because they are from richer and more advanced countries base on their impression. But young Chinese below 30 are now immune to this kind of mentality. They now don't really think white skin people or people from developed countries are better because Chinese now has advanced technology and great infrastructure as well. They realized that China actually is more advanced in many aspects compared to developed countries based on their own travel experience or from the vlogs online. So young Chinese people now can treat all the people with different skin colors and from different countries equally. However, for older people in 50s+, I believe there are still some unintentional discrimination in their mind.

Chinese skin also very white, like porcelain wh!te or wh!ter than wh!te. So don't get trapped using the built-in racist words, like "white", "black", "colored", etc. which were devised by the Caucasian West. European Caucasian skin is lacking in pigment not the Chinese. Anyway, as for dark skinned Africans, well, what's the problem, they are less hairy than most people, especially compared to Caucasians,

In Ming Dynasty Chinese sailed to Africa and treated the African people with respect, they were also recieved well by the Africans. Sone Chinese sailors liked Africa so much they stayed to kive there, they married Aftican wives and had descendents, their descendents still exist today. While back in China, white Europeans had to bow down to the Chinese Ming Dynasty government officials!

Thank you for addressing this and bringing this up. My one issue with that person's comment is that he/she brings up Chinese social media as if it is representative of 1.4 billion people's views on black people. Chinese social media doesn't reflect all of Chinese society. I follow a lot of black people living in China on Weibo and they have a lot of supportive fans. And yes, I also see racist comments from time to time and I would argue and yell at them online because of it. Thing is that this behavior is no better than people on X/twitter or reddit who also say racist things Chinese people or Asians in general. Heck I even read comments on X and reddit from westerners advocating for the g word. Now that is disturbing. Also, Chinese social media is a hell hole (like twitter) and Chinese people even make fun of other Chinese people's misery and misfortune. Personally I am not a fan of a certain type of Chinese internet users who are a little bit too blunt and I can see now why the CPC is trying to bring Confucianism back because we need it. Also because of China's giant population, if there are 1 million racist people in China, that sounds like a lot until you realize that 1 million is only 0.1% of the total population. Anyways, best not to engage in the comment section of Chinese social media in general. Now the irony of it all is that this makes great justification why Chinese social media need censorship because the government cares about social harmony. In contrast, here in the US, the government and media love to fan the flame negative stories for views and votes. Even in the UK, there were race riots because of some fake conspiracy theory that spread like fire. That would most likely not happen in China since the government would try to nip all of that in the butt before it becomes viral on Weibo.

I appreciate your take on racism in China. I'm a white (pink really) American and have wondered about that. I came here 15 times before moving here in 2022. In my building there in a young girl who speaks a little English,. when she sees me she gives me a big smile and says "Hello laowai!" Chinese people don't seem to be hyper-sensitive about other people's race, like in the USA.

Racial discrimination in China is extremely rare. The commenter you quoted is either an outlier, or just a plain liar.

I don’t think I would generally consider a person’s choice of romantic partner grounds for racism, even if it involves obvious exclusion. In the end it’s an intimate matter. Perhaps if the person fetishized a group. The issue of relatives and friends not accepting a chosen partner based on race is probably the most common challenge.

A common cliche in western movies (especially Hollywood) is where the black man is often not expected to survive to the end, although his passing will be heroic, passionate and tragic. If I were to play the black man, I think I would passionately tell the other guy to go first, and tragically mourn his passing. As Dave Chapelle stated, "Mm mmmm. We just understood the situation differently." 😅

Great video, and an interesting topic. Personally, I've been in China for eight years nearly, and can say I've never encountered racism in any kind here. But, and a big but, I'm a white gut from Australia, so can't compare to your experience. However, I have known a few black guys and girls living here, and we have occasionally chatted about this topic, and none of them have ever encountered racism, but have encountered plenty of curious people because they have never seen a black person. I get the same reaction when visiting small rural villages where foreigners rarely, if ever, travel!! First time I've come across your channel, looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the future, and following your journey here. Did you say you are moving to Shenzhen soon?? If you find your way to Zhaoqing anytime, not far from Shenzhen, look me up and I'll be your tour guide!! Subscribed!!

in chinese we say black man and white man, its not really particular discriminative in of itself. We don't have such a culture behind where we separate base on racial lines but rather as the norm is, class lines. thats where the real discriminative behaviour is, such as HKer think they are better than their mainland counterparts, Shanghaiese think themselves as better than their rural migrant population. However it is nothing compared to the hateful nature some people have in US. I got asked if i eat fried rice by white man in south africa while, the some african asked if i do Kung-Fu. These just feel different, even if both are prejudice. The last thing is that its more on the side of not knowing and having some but minor prejudice beliefs vs the US were it has been integral to the culture and exacerbated by the media to show black people are "violent" and or have "violent tendencies". Its disproportionately understood when compared. Even south korea who is notably racist but that is completely due to the judging nature created in their society. They judge their own people incredible harshly even based just on education level. without context it is unfair to pull they are the same card. China has many ethic minorities and its not something that is actively discriminative against. They probably (older gen) have a hatred more on japanese than anyone else😅

Good question! Working for a good language and international school pays more. Yes, I work for a private institution and they offer a good work-life balance and a great salary. There is a three-step interview process but some school's interview processes are straightforward. China is a great place to work if you find a great school and I will suggest you find a recruiter on this site www.eslcafe.com Beware kindergarten requires lots of energy, public schools have 40+ students in class and the salary is lower but you get a great holiday package just like international schools but the workloads are insane with better pay. I hope this helps.

Well, I have 2 things to say, or factors for people to consider. This might be a little long, but I need to explain where I'm coming from, so bear with me. 1.) To start with, humans are hard wired to be suspicious of other humans that look different to them (there are caveats, which I'll explain later). It was likely evolved as a defence mechanism. For 99% of our history, out of a few million years, the more that someone looks different to you, the more distant their culture is from yours. A good approximation of how you should behave is to be suspicious, as the expected behavior of that person is going to be something unexpected. This was a great idea back then, but obviously, this is no longer the case in the 21st century. Unfortunately, however, it can't be undone. This is a well studied phenomenon, they've wired people up to brain scanners and showed them photos of other people, and depending on the ethnic identity of the person they saw, different areas of their brain lit up. Not to say that this is racism, but your brain does't lie and it indeed does differentiate people based on their looks. Now the exception to this, are some people who have multi-ethnic families, or grew up in small multi-ethnic communities, for which I'm confident to say, this is not the case for most East Asian people. 2.) Now having established the first point, which is to say that, it is a human thing to differentiate other humans based on their physical appearance, likely with suspicion and ignorance being involved. We shouldn't just define this behavior as racism, because then almost everyone would be racist. I don't want to give a definition of what racism is, but I'd like to make an observation. What we tend to define as racism in the west, is something very specific, let's just say, it is the leftovers from the days of colonialism and empires. If this is true, then again, this doesn't apply to most of East Asia, because the countries here did not participate (japan probably did but they did it in Asia). So whatever racism people encounter in China, real or not, however it is defined, my argument is that in majority of cases, it probably has more to do with point number one, but it is fundamentally not the same thing as the racism we encounter in the west.

I don't know exactly where you stand on this as I think you may have the language wrong here. It sounds like you're speaking of descrimination against aliens rather than actual racism. I'd agree that there is descrimination aliens everywhere because why would you treat something unknown to you more differently. You don't trust a stranger as much as you would trust a family member. Anyways, I wouldn't equate that to racism if that's actually what you're trying to say.

@@lzl4226 yeah no worries, I wasn't sure too so I thought I'd put my piece out there. I don't blame anyone for being cautious especially when approaching something very alien. Partly out of defence and partly out of not wanting to offend the other party. I don't know if anyone had this experience but I didn't understand or perceive race until I was about 10 years old. I just didn't understand the conceptual difference between someone being Chinese or someone being American. I thought people were people and they had small differences due to their country of origin. It may be because the school I went to was full of Vietnamese, Italians, Greeks, Chinese, Middle Eastern. We were pretty much all the same.
@wwbren
@wwbren 4 күн бұрын
@@lzl4226 If they are confident of the security of their environment, and in themselves, they wouldn't need to be so wary of strangers to the extent of discriminating against them. What you say might be largely applicable in olden times, but some societies have evolved. So I don't think as a defence mechanism is enough to excuse discrimination. More like propaganda and even indoctrination caused people into thinking some races meant more harm not simply because they looked different.

I've lived in a number of different countries and it really depends on which community you live in. But it doesn't matter what race it is, it depends on the community. In general though, I find Chinese people not so racist. There are some but they are not the extreme racism in some white communities. Moreover, there are racism in all races, even within black communities. When I was living in the US, there were extremely racist black people who hated whites. I've lived in Australia and I met some really racist indigenous people. Just depends.

Coming from mainland China, my explain about that comment: when Chinese people take you as another Chinese, they could show you their "racism". The group discrimination among Chinese people could compare with racism, foreign people may feel the discrimination as racism. As two sides of same coin, when you get Chinese "racism" treatment, you will get certain privelege for sure. For that commenter, if he or she understand Chinese more, and get some real Chinese friends telling their understanding, could be what I said above. American racism is easy to understand, white American treat black slave as property, not human, never as human equal. China never have racism institution, how China is racist sociaty? It's just a misunderstanding.
