A rocket carrying the Chang'e-6 lunar probe blasts off from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in southern China's Hainan province. The Chang'e-6 seeks to collect samples from the far side of the Moon, a world first as Beijing pushes ahead with an ambitious programme that aims to send a crewed lunar mission by 2030.

The Chang'e-6 mission plans to go to the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon to conduct morphological exploration and geological background surveys, and to discover and collect lunar samples from different regions and ages. In order to enhance international cooperation, the Chang'e-6 mission carried payloads and satellite projects from four countries, including a French radon gas detector, an ESA negative ion detector, an Italian laser corner reflector, and a Pakistani cubesat.
