China is executing a masterplan to dominate world football, pumping billions of dollars into buying up foreign players, coaches and entire European clubs, and grooming new generations of its own young stars. Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzbin.info_c...
China is the world’s rising superpower, but in soccer it’s a pushover; in the race for the World Cup, it’s a perennial dud. But all that may be about to change. "China has just exploded out of nowhere" says Trent Sainsbury, an Australian playing for Jiangsu Suning FC. Sainsbury’s club is owned by an electronics group which has splashed nearly $100 million on imported players in the past two years. It also spent $380 million buying Italian superclub Inter Milan. Other Chinese clubs spend even more.
After decades of neglect, money is also starting to flow at a grass-roots level. In the backwater town of Zhidan, coach Ding Changbao has pioneered a highly successful youth program. "A lot of Chinese people are now flocking to football because they want their children to become stars", says Ding. Among his charges is rising star Gao Baosen, aged 12. He and his family struggle to get by, but he has big dreams. "My dream is to be like Ronaldo, to be a professional player like him." Baosen and coach Ding are just small pieces of the Government’s plan to have 50 million players and 50,000 coaching schools by 2025 - and, by 2050, to sit atop the football world.

In Ghana kids teach themselves to play. When I was a kid, I play with my other neighbors on week days 3pm til maybe 7pm after school. On weekends we play from 8 in the morning after breakfast til 8pm in the evening nonstop. only time we break off is to go eat our lunch . Then we join the pitch again. On vacations from school we play from 8 am to 8pm. we virtually develop ourselves til we get lucky to join academies.

yea it is true they have to develop passion, but this way gets things done too, as you get good in something you do develop passion many of the times. also to play professionally you have to be in clubs in a young age, same here in Canada, I used to play everyday as a kid, but when playing against kids who play in clubs there are still alot of differences. also in china like this kids family, many in north western regions are still very poor so they need government support for supplies, travelling, coaching fees, injury costs, physio costs, otherwise they wouldnt be able to afford it, thus talents was remain undiscovered or wasted.

I studied abroad in Beijing for 3 years and worked in several provinces for 7 years after that. The passion and popularity for soccer is genuine and impressive, but the skill level of China’s best players (e.g. national team players and best “home-grown players” in the Super League) are nowhere near the level of Europe and South America. Doubtful they will win a World Cup by 2050, it’s not like any of the other countries are slowing down their own progress either....

I also worked and lived in parts of China but it seemed to be more of another desire for "China number 1" rather than genuine passion. There are a very few high school teams but I saw almost no amateur kid's setups or lower professional apparatus. It was all focused on a hothousing culture that was very small, insular and not really taken seriously anyway. It was far, far more common for me to see people playing badminton (or occasionally table-tennis) rather than kicking a ball about. This is the case for a lot of other more physical and especially team sports that the culture just doesn't really gravitate towards.

@@seanhk9359 Only a small minority in some of the biggest city parks tbh. I saw very few older people who chose to do that regularly instead of the famous dance-offs, which were fascinating to observe as a westerner lol. The fact that Basketball was the most popular team-sport was puzzling to me but I considered it to be a slightly curious affectation similar to Japan with baseball. However, in every community area there were kids and their families knocking a shuttlecock around and there were many ping-pong tables that were also used regularly. There were no community football pitches used outside of high schools at designated times (maybe because of space) and there were even fewer kids kicking a ball about with makeshift goals (jumpers for goalposts) or playing team/physically demanding sports, despite there being many footballs available. People would feel embarrassed about China's inability to find 11 players out of a population of 1.4 billion and pay lip service to improving but I definitely wouldn't call it genuine passion or particularly impressive. China's appetite for technical, individual sports is genuine and impressive (which fits their culture far more closely) but even for physically demanding sports that originated or have close links to China (martial arts etc.) the inability to take these seriously is striking. Go to far poorer countries in the Fiji Islands for rugby, India or Pakistan for cricket and South America for football and you will see an impressively genuine culture of team sports fanaticism that is uplifting and joyous to behold. It does wonders for community spirit and is a unifying force that fits into their culture and physiology. As much as China would like to pretend that football fits into this bracket for them, it definitely does not and probably never will. I really hope and pray that the beautiful game is never joylessly dominated by a Chinese national team until it's actually appreciated for these pleasures, rather than shamelessly exploited for propaganda purposes.

The problem always is that whomever the sport that President of Mainland will like would be the direction where the money was pouring into. In the time of Mao, it was table tennis. Then it was Basketball with Jiang. Now it is football with Xi. But there is always the problem with Mainland China. It is a state controlled funding from the young all to way getting the best to the Olympics. They were trained to be the athletes for the glory of the 'Strong Country'. Not only were they away from everyone including their own family, but they were tortured in the name of sacrifice. Moreover, once they are successful. The state kept a tab on their training and demanded that they fork a significant part of their cash winnings back to them. The problem is, once they outlive their usefulness for the Mainland's propaganda machine. They were cast away like trash without any safety net for the rest of their lives. Only the most successful with the big names could either stay behind and earn as coaches at the provincial and the national levels. Or lucky enough to leave and be the national coaches for foreign countries. Former Tennis star and World's top 10 player Li Na was criticized by the government for not giving the state's share of her winnings. Despite she was trained without their help. Therefore, state sponsorship for sports can be dried up without a moment's notice. About 20 years ago, China's Women Football team rivaled with the US as the best in the world. All of the sudden, they dropped out of nowhere. It was the same 30 years prior with their Women Ice Hockey team. Sure, they were nowhere against the powerhouses in the Canadians and the Americans ladies, but they held their own against other strong European countries such as Sweden and Finland. But just like Basketball, the funding dried up. It is well documented that a lot of Middle East business were using big European Football teams as a front for money laundering. The Chinese Corporations, mostly state sponsored or affiliated, are doing just the same in purchasing big name teams such as both AC and Inter Milan and splashing ludicrous contracts for players and managers for the Chinese Super League. Problem is, economy goes through the cycles of ups and downs. It is pretty easy to overspend and vaporized the league if they are all swimming in a deep sea of red ink. It was evident from the NASL failed experiment to the obvious talent gap in the hot beds of World Football both in Europe and South America. This might be the beginning but without a proper coaching and training system available to the Mainland Chinese children, how would they measured up against the best of Asia, which are Australia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Iran at the moment? Let alone with the likes of the European and the South American powerhouses? The only reason why China qualified for the 2002 World Cup were solely because South Korea and Japan were the co-hosts of the tournament, and 2 spots were freed up. Currently, they would needed a miracle to even qualify to the third place playoffs in their Hex group because they were so far behind the standings. With only a significant 1-0 victory over South Korea as a decent result. They drew 0-0 in both tides in the earlier round against a much weaker opponent in Hong Kong and just barely got through in the last game. Also the Chinese Super League is popular due to the government and the corporations throwing money to have token media headlines. The quality of the product is still far from the other established leagues in South Korea, Japan and even Australia. Given how stars like Demba Ba was almost crippled from lousy tackles by those Mainland players who shouldn't even be playing the game. It gave the stark reminder to the current big stars of whether they would like to gamble their playing career or accepting instant big paycheques.

I believe there are already Chinese football players that can compete in Europe. The problem is not fostering talent, the problem is the Chinese mentality. China has a very cut-throat culture, and professional football is even more so. Why should I pass to you so you can score? Why should I help you if we're both fighting for the starter spot? How can I benefit the most as opposed to how the team can benefit the most?

To me, it is almost impossible to be realistically competing for the world cup without producing at least 2 generations of good players. Japan's plan to win the world cup by 2050 started 20yrs ago and they still have a long way to go. The gap between China and Japan is greater than the distance between Japan and the world cup. The coaches in the grassroots are mostly without any qualifications! God knows what these kids have been taught with! Certainly the first few touches by that boy were all wrong, even though he was urged on by a very inpatient coach, who probably didn’t know what he was doing!

It's easy to understand that China should have some degree of Football within the country. But I seriously don't think that it will be a real contender within the game even by 2050, the government can force kids to play...but would they really want to? The Chinese still are reeling mentally from Colonialism, so they want to do everything better than the West. Would a game really improve their image that much? No. If anything America will be a better nation in terms of Football play before China is. Not to say that they won't be, just not as soon as most think.

Glad to meet another well mannered American. First of all, China doesn't have a quarter of world population and I believe it is Fortune 500. Second of all, I don't think you watched the video. And you think Chinese government pours in money and only expects 1 thing in return? That's why the Chinese are dominating you guys. Your mind is simple and you lack strategic thinking.

If anyone can China can. But I don’t think they’ll dominate. They sure can get into the top 10. England despite all the money FA has, the resources and passion for football has not made it to the world cup final since 66, and only one semi final last 28 years. And England is the home of football.

China only dominates very unpopular sports in the Olympic Games. Focusing on unpopular sports is part of the Chinese communist party’s plan to boost China’s gold metal count. Ultimately even in communist China one cannot force a child to love the game of football. The passion for the game and relentless pursuit of excellence required to dominate a sport like football is arguably not part of the Chinese cultural identity. China winning a World Cup? Keep dreaming China.

@@minhphamquang5683 physical and robotic, France, Netherlands and Germany above all ; however I do find Far-eastern soccer (apart from Japan and South Korea) to offer more genuine soccer dexterity and talent as opposed to other "qualities" such as power, athleticism, discipline etc. ; Far-eastern soccer is still at an embryonic stage, but true nimbleness and talent is already observable, particularly in matches opposing South-East Asian teams e.g. Myanmar, Singapore etc. (even though their rhythm of play is still very slow)
