The train looks so Quintessentially American throttling up and rounding the curve at 3:25. When I was growing up, there were a lot of 6-axle GE's assigned to Conrail's line between Selkirk, NY and Boston, MA- a few C36-7s but many more C30-7As... blue 'cousins' of these ND5s with slightly less horsepower. I'm a little sad to see those ND5s on their way out, but happy they were so reliable and had served for so long.

Yep by the time they were freshly imported to China there were few engines good enough to use on the lines... There are steam locomotives such as class qj or class sl but they usually need two or more of them to be capable to pull a train which is a hassle...As for the diesels there are DF4s but they aren't as good and they aren't as many. China has a large rail network and he needs hundreds or even thousands of engines while the locomotive works can't make that many. ND5 is great. It is reliable and it has the traction to conquer the slopes (which is a pain for steams pulling freight). Since it can run 120kph it is also good for long passenger trains in mountainous regions...despite the dispatch usually don't do this because it can be done with a pair of class SLs but not vice versa.
