yeah, can't believe how much it has changed since 2005... it used to be when i was out there working or sightseeing for a day, i go back to the hotel at the end of day and wash my face with a hot towel, the towel turned black with coal soot. the city rarely sees a day of clear skies. i don't even recognize those aerial shots... it looks like the outskirts by the various royal tombs(about 1hr drive outside of the city).

@@BenjiSun As you rightly pointed, coal burning and coal soot were, and still are, the biggest culprit behind China's air pollution problem, especially in the Northeast. It's an unfortunate by-product of China's fossil fuel endowment - very rich in coal (earliest record of coal mine dates back to 1000BC), but very poor in oil and gas relative to its population.
