When discussing China's aviation achievements, the spotlight often falls on the C919. However, it's impossible to overlook the global impact of China's ARJ21 aircraft. As of June this year, China has successfully delivered a third ARJ21 to Indonesia’s TransNusa-a deal notably conducted in RMB. In the first half of 2024 alone, China delivered 15 ARJ21 aircraft to various global airlines, with plans to reach 33 deliveries by year's end. This accelerated delivery pace and expanding market share are putting pressure on aviation giant Boeing. In today’s video, we delve into the unique aspects of the ARJ21 and analyze why more airlines are choosing it over the more publicized C919.
Historically, Boeing has dominated the global aviation market with its superbly designed and highly reliable aircraft. However, Boeing’s seeming invincibility was challenged when Airbus from France entered the scene, breaking its market monopoly. Over the subsequent five decades, Boeing and Airbus have shaped the industry landscape together. In the 21st century, as the global aviation market expanded and transportation demands grew, several countries began to challenge the Boeing-Airbus duopoly, including China.
In 2002, China officially announced its plan to develop its own civil aircraft, targeting mass production by 2009. By 2007, China's aviation industry had made significant progress, leading to the ARJ21’s first test flight in 2008. By 2015, the ARJ21 had secured its airworthiness certificate, allowing it to operate in the commercial market. Designed primarily for short-haul routes with a capacity of 90 passengers, the ARJ21 has become known for its strong performance in high-altitude operations and crosswind resistance, making it ideal for challenging conditions.
Compared to the C919, which competes with mainline jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, the ARJ21 serves a different market segment. Despite its smaller size and shorter range, the ARJ21 has garnered significant international recognition. Since its commercial introduction in November 2015, 128 ARJ21 aircraft have been delivered, accumulating over 360,000 flight hours and carrying more than 12 million passengers. Notable sales in 2024 include a significant order from Tibet Airlines and Congo Airways.
China’s aviation market rise poses a challenge to Boeing, which has faced safety concerns and geopolitical tensions affecting its production and sales. Meanwhile, the ARJ21 and C919 are steadily entering the market, with the C929 project aiming to compete in the wide-body market. With continuous investment and policy support, China’s aviation capabilities are set to challenge established players, signaling significant shifts in the global aviation landscape.

Wow, Comac is delivering 33 ARJ21 by the end of 2024 to various airlines. Comac is growing rapidly as it is conquering the civil aviation market with a complete portfolio from the short range aircraft ARJ21 to medium range and long range wide body aircraft of the C919, C929 and C939. Indonesia has been using the ARJ21 for Jakarta-den pasar routes for sometime.

It will be some time off in the future before COMAC offerings are even competitive with Western product, much less "conquering the civil aviation market". The C919 for example is overweight and relatively fuel hungry. The ARJ21 is basically a knock-off of a very old McDonnell Douglas/Boeing design, lately retired from passenger service. For now, what's coming out of COMAC factories is a trip back in time to the late 1900's in the USA.

@@marcmcreynolds2827 except that China makes her aircraft much better in terms of costs, quality and performance than the USA has ever done in the past. Just 50 years ago there was no high bypass ratio engines or low noise advanced propeller engines and Comac’s ARJ21 has a high performance economy that has far surpassed the ‘old’ American DC9 type of aircraft you mentioned. It is not even a comparison. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@philiptan2051 Are you a bot? The ARJ21 uses GE engines! Russia designed the wing. That left the fuselage for China, and it can't even pressurize to levels of Brazilian aviation, much less Boeing/Airbus (or the McDonnell Douglas DC-9). So a low cruising altitude, about the same as a DC-7 from the 1950s, down in the bumpy weather. Noisy interior as well. So again, the lineup is a bad copy (ARJ21), an ok but uncompetitive mostly original design (C919), and a lot of unfounded claims for other aircraft which don't yet exist.

@@philiptan2051 Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) has sold a lot of DC-9s to Indonesia, FWIW. I don't blame you for wanting to change the subject from "the lineup is a bad copy (ARJ21), an ok but uncompetitive mostly original design (C919), and a lot of unfounded claims"... but if I have to explain aviation to you one digression at a time then we're going to be here for quite a while. Better things to do, so unless you have something substantive to discuss, I've already made the points I wanted to make: China's commercial offerings are slowly developing, but lag significantly behind the West and only the most ignorant of true believers could imagine they might actually be ahead.

Competition is good for the whole world. Let the markets decide on the prices, supplies, funding, airworthiness certificates, maintenance, and insurance. America alleges China of overcapacity in industrial manufacturing. America and Europe does not complain of undercapacity in Boeing and Airbus passenger jets. Hopefully, Comac and AVIC will create " overcapacity." in commercial passenger jets. It is good, new orders for passenger jets will not be ten years. 😮

China developed the ARJ21 commercial aircraft in 2008 and also conceived the conceptual design for the narrow-bodied C919 in the same year. The large-bodied CR929 design went into focus in cooperation with Russia but it was changed to C929 when Russia dropped out of the project in 2023. Little do people know that in the year 2020 China also planned for an even bigger aircraft, the C939, to compete directly with Boeing 777x and Airbus A350-1000. For COMAC to reach an economy of scale for its C919 jet liner and the subsequent C929 and even C939, China will need to severely restrict the purchases of Airbus and Boeing planes or to temporarily stop the purchases completely for the next few years. Only then can COMAC have the confidence to go full steam ahead with the production as well as an expansion of production and assembly lines to reach an annual target of at least 400 aircrafts to become a viable player in the aviation field.

The ARJ21 airframe is based on the old DC9, which was produced under licence in China. And the wings are designed by Antonov, so I would not call the plane very innovative. Claiming that Boeing is under unprecedent pressure is tendentious to say the least. In the first quarter (jan, feb, march) this year Embraer has delivered 25 aircraft, which is more or less double of the ARJ21 deliveries in the same period. In that same 1st quarter Boeing delivered 83 aircraft and Airbus delivered 142 aircraft. So the global impact of Comac today is rather... tiny. The above does not mean that Comac cannot grow. If the Chinese government keeps stimulating the local airline industry, Comac can become as big or bigger than Airbus and Boeing. The future wil tell.

I'll believe they're actually getting good at engines when they stop trying to steal data regarding the finer points from the West.

The only main aspect is that ARJ21 is still not certified neither in Europe, nor in the USA, so we can’t speak about widespread acceptance of this aircraft. The Chinese authorities usually deal very effectively, they sale their aircrafts under the market price and offer a very cheap training for personnel (probably sometimes they just give some aircrafts for free and organize the training for the staff also free of charge).

(former airliner engineer) I wouldn't have a problem with flying on a C919, once it finally accumulates some real flight hours (the current four aircraft flying won't move that along very quickly). ARJ21 doesn't seem to have matured very well, though it has become more reliable than its early dismal record. The composite designs still to come are another matter. The PRC has been able to get away with appropriating knowledge gleaned from others in going down the learning curve of various disciplines (e.g. gas turbines, servo valves), but integrity of large composite structures isn't one I would be comfortable with assuming they've sufficiently figured out. Something will make it into the air for sure, but by how much will their flaw detection capabilities have developed at that point? Everything's fine for however many thousands of flights, but tick-tock tick-tock...

Speaking of twenty years ago, that's the gap between Airbus and COMAC: The C919 has the specs an A320 did about two decades ago. It has a long way to go before it will be competitive in sales competitions.

@user-xt7tf4oi7n Still the lowest in the market compare to japanese, european, Korean, or american cars. Even in asia outside china. Material quality is the issue.

Who would have thought that China could build a space station, and is the only country that has its own space station. 10 years ago there were only a few EV cars , now they sell more than any EV car made by the west

@@alastorgdl "Stranded" is internet crap. They can come back at any time. But the service module will burn up in the atmosphere, so validating the ground tests they are running now means staying on-orbit until those tests (expected to take about two weeks) are completed.

30 years ago nobody was buying Hyundai. Only if Chinese airlines buy C919, it will win a decent share of the market. Do you know how many jet liners China will need in the next 20 years?

China built a space station without help or collaboration with other country. The US can't do it, let alone the rest of western lapdogs.

You do not need to re-invent a tire, what you need is to look on how you gonna use it for! And therefore since the wright brothers did a lot on flying anybody can now make his own flying machine and you should not talk of copying! Bravo the Chines for good innovative work!
