China's DF-17 is an anti-ship ballistic missile with an unconventional warhead - a hypersonic glide vehicle. Is this weapon a game-changer against anti-ballistic missile defences?

Not even DF-21D and DF-26 can be surely intercepted by US defense system as confessed by US Pacific commander. While DF-17 is a mixed between ballistic and cruise missile then DF-21D and DF-26 are super-maneuvering terminal phase missile (change its direction at terminal phase which unusual in western missile technology but it's part of Russian invention like Kinzhal).

@John Smith honestly the tech for lasers hasn't matured yet. in fact, it has been proven that even the strongest lasers today can't engage targets that are too far away, and can't melt missiles fast enough before they hit the ship. the future is there though, but it's going to take decades on the other hand, missiles are more reliable and in some circumstances, way cheaper than lasers. I think, it would be beneficial if the US can find a way to put multiple missiles into a single booster. So after launching the booster at multiple targets, the multiple missiles in the booster separates and can target the incoming missiles independently. (Kinda using MIRV tech in ICBMs for missile defence)

That's not quite correct. Chinese ASBMs have high maneuverability. The problem wasn't the controls. The problem has always been the targeting. Once China solved the ability to see through the plasma sheath, the warhead now has high maneuverability. It can now see incoming threats and move out of the way. Look up grid fins. Normal fins rip off at high Mach speeds. You can see grid find on SpaceX reusable rockets. This makes it almost impossible for current technology to intercept. The closing speed is around Mach 30. With the high processing speed, it can be programmed to move at the right moment. This gives the ABM no time to correct itself thus resulting in a miss. And there is no way to correct this problem. As it is a time and physics problem. In order to fix this problem, the ABM would have to be moving much faster than the incoming missile to intercept properly. It would also require sensors at speeds that we don't have today. The reason is the warhead can move in any direction. Whereas the ABM must move at the warhead.

As long as this problem isn’t solved Chinese ASBM’s will never be a major threat to the USN. Thank god for plasma.
@EurasiaNaval
@EurasiaNaval Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Felix. I won't challenge you on the maneuvrability of the Chinese ASBMs, and happy to take your reasoning for it. On the targetting issue of hypersonic weapons, my understanding is that it depends on the altitude and the speed of the hypersonic weapon. Specifically, at a low hypersonic speed of Mach 5, the radar seeker can work if the weapon dives on the target from a high altitude. At a relatively low speed and where air is thin, the plasma sheath does not become a problem. For example, the Russian Kh-15, a Mach 5 AShM from the 1980s made high-altitude dives on the target from 40,000 metre - so it is feasible. While the speed of the DF-ZF HGV is unknown, most sources believe Mach 5-10. So it is possible that the HGV slows down to Mach 5 as it descends into thicker air, permitting guidance, although it may not be perfect. That is just my guess, based on past examples of an active-guided weapon functioning at similar speeds. There are reports of Chinese scientists making breakthroughs in radio communications through plasma blackouts - so they are working on the problem! Anyway, that's all from me
