If it is the 9meter universal VLS, a few dozen of them will rule the waves. They look much cheaper to build compared to type 55 or 52D. Much smaller than full destroyer making them much harder to detect.

Hypothetically this thing would be the most heavily armed vessel per ton in the world. With a maximum of 12 VLS (yes I know you said 16, but the model clearly shows 12 cells), a Point defense missile launcher, torpedoes, a deck gun and what appears to be a laser weapon on top of the mast.

I think the name "Orca" can be an indication of its role, it might be design to be deploy an use in pack, maybe 4 to 6 with sth like a type 055 acting as the command center. this can be a pretty good force mulitiplier if use properly, expecially in ambush scenario which the stealthy design can help a lot.

Isn't the trimaran design a common way to make smaller vessels more blue navy worthy? Since it has no human crew, it's more fuel efficient, and thus can sail farther into the Pacific than a crewed ship of the same displacement. The trimaran design makes it more suitable for blue water naval operations because trimarans are extremely stable in the water, almost impossible to capsize. My biggest question is how they will handle the maintenance. Warships need a great deal of maintenance for their engines in particular. Is it going to be skeleton crewed while in transit, and then the crew is offloaded when the ship is about to go into combat? Or has it be built with enough redundancy that it can forego maintenance for a few weeks?

Uh oh I remember a Sci Fi television show or video game. It might have been ST Voyager, Maybe Andromeda or something like that. The ship is piloted by an AI... maybe the Emergency command Hologram. A salvage ship and crew lay claim on it as there's nobody onboard and the AI is not recognised as crew so it's open for salvage. Sci of course... but what exactly stops somebody sailing up to it and claiming it as salvage?

Probably a prototype design, to assess the pro's and con's of a large unmanned surface vessel; I note it does have a bridge of sorts, so it could be operated in a "crew on hand to address issues" mode, to assist in the refinement of the control software, prior to the refined model being either further developed, or committed to serial production, should that be the PLA N's intention?
