good let us see three months down the road and see if there is a shift of supply chains or West calls for surender. More of the other rare earths should also be added to the two . Two is only baby steps of retatiation actually.

I am sure that the USA would like to source their rare earths elsewhere, However it is not just a matter of finding the deposits, they are not rare at all. The greatest problem is processing them. Though almost everywhere they are in very low concentrations and extremely difficult to process. China had developed and patented all of the necessary technologies to do so, and while it would be possible for any country to develop their own technologies to do so. Such developments would be a long and expensive route. In the mean time Chine would have a virtual monopoly. They will probably sell just sufficient to make it uneconomic for other countries to do so.

It is identically true for high end semiconductors. US has banned Huawei over three years and now China has developed its own chips. Time for the US to show the world that it can also process its own rare earth.

@@gunsumwong3948 the USA has plenty of deposits of rare earths, and at one time was the larges producer of the minerals, however that was tiny amounts compared to today's volumes and requirements. It was never able to produce then in volume or competitively. And has never been able to set up an industrial supply chain or develop large scale processes. However if it is prepared to spend the billions required for their own research, development and to set up an industrial supply chain. No doubt they cold be self sufficient in ten or more years. But what do you propose that they do in the mean time, to maintain even vital supplies to the arms and chip industries let alone all the other industries that depend on regular supplies.

@@terryandrews49 A few years ago it was acceptable whoever good at something will produce it and the rest of the world can buy. Thus China has been happy to make and sell billions pair of jeans just to buy one plane from Boeing. For years China paid somewhere around half a trillion dollar to purchase the high end semiconductor chips from the US and never complained. Then US put a stop to it by banning Huawei, then leaned on each ally to ban Huawei and strip off every Huawei equipment. If that wasn't bad enough it forced Japan, South Korea and Netherlands to stop supplying semiconductor equipment and cease maintaining equipment already sold to China plus denying access of equipment's spare parts. Everyone know US has plenty rare earth and can build its own supply chain. That is not an issue. China just refuses to supply them cheaply as a reciprocation to US sanction on semiconductors to China. China is quite happy to go separate way.

They will use them themselves and export finished chips products thus getting higer revenue. Meanwhile entire West will start the tedious route of developing their own if they can last that long before telling China "We surrender"

All you did was restate a terrible source (CNN report) without adding anything. That's low effort, thumbs down.
