Back in the late 60's I was on leave in Hong Kong. I wanted to buy a Mao's "little red book" as a souvenir. The Commie department store sold them at a very high price, I picked out a smaller size book. After the purchase I discovered that the pages were blank! To be fair there IS a room for a library without that many books. Just in my town alone, granted - in Europe, we have exchange for toys , table top games or baking utensils. Also a traditional library just had opened doors after renovation and it includes cricut (design and cut) lab, 3D printing lab (modeling and printing), laser engraving lab, individual computer work stations and even a relaxation room. I truly am proud of designers for even coming up with ideas. And as someone who contemplating whether to buy a gadget of 1000 USD for a few DIY projects - getting stuff done at the library seems very enticing.

it is, the actual library is in the surrounding rooms. I've been to plenty of libraries all over Asia that are incredibly similar. it wouldn't make sense to put books under a bunch of raised seating areas. this channel is purely funded for anti-china narrative. which is fine, but its dishonest. South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong & Japan have plenty of libraries that do a similar thing. Asian countries love photo opportunities & large foyers to congregate. China isn't different in that regard.

@@TK-Yogi there is not much space in the "surrounding rooms" for books either. Only first and second floor of building have book shelves and most of the space in first and second floor is occupied by that large atrium with fake books and projector ball. Rooms on third, fourth and fifth floor are reading rooms or computer rooms or gathering rooms, not book storage. All libraries in asia or west that I have seen are actually putting the books on shelves in the atrium too, they have floors with railings to allow access to the books on all levels. Because that's what libraries should do. The original project for this library from MVRDV had the high shelves in main room accessible from the side rooms. It was not designed to be "fake". This design was changed to use fake books and wallpaper during construction by chinese local authorities to save cost and build quick. Congratulation, you are a wumao

I used to teach in Jiangsu, China where they had a massive library. I often go there for private study. I was so surprised to find out that students NEVER go there. They only use its lower ground floor for PE where they play Ping-Pong. Several hundred square meters of empty chairs and tables, and 5 floors big. The librarians, who were so happy to at least have ONE teacher visit them, told me that the library was built ONLY to impress then Chinese President, Hu Jintao during his visit there!

@@jwhite5008 I'd say that's the wrong analogy to make. You don't go to a kindergarten to look at animals. It's like going to the zoo and seeing that most of the exhibits are painted animals instead of real ones. Like yes, there's gonna be painted illustrations there. But the big thing is that there is going to be a wide selection of real animals to look at. Connecting that to the library: You would expect the books at the high unreachable shelves to be just for decoration. It's useless to put real books up there. But you should have real books on the reachable shelves. If not, what's the point of having that part of the library other than just to look good and trick people.
@vocassen
@vocassen 3 ай бұрын
@@SahasaVIdk, wouldn't put books on floor-level either, so by design only 4 of those layers I'd actually want books on. Which would also be kinda confusing if you can't tell from a distance. So IF there is actually a decent library somewhere nearby, then I'd actually be ok with it, though I still don't like the design (separate issue tho). Generally like this channel, but they do sometimes turn off their own critical thinking, which HARMS the objective of showing the actual bad sides of chinas by discrediting themselves. I think it's good to call them out whenever they do that to make sure when they actually do point out the bad sides, they are taken seriously. It's sometimes hard sharing videos from them when there are clear exaggeration/misinformation in them (or just the general tone being a bit too one sided). I'd prefer if they were more muted, so I can actually share them and not be labelled a china hater (that turned into a rant of the whole channel, sorry)

@@jwhite5008 What I think is a good analogy is if Wal-Mart released videos and photos of a huge fancy looking store with shelves stacked with every product you can imagine and tried to convince you that this is proof that they are superior to any and all competition they have - then when you take the time to go to the store you find out it's all wildly impractical for the purpose of shopping and they have a normal selection of products that you could expect to find at any store. You'd probably realize "oh Wal-Mart was trying to trick me into thinking their stores are better with this nice LOOKING store, they don't actually care about making a BETTER store." That is exactly what is going on here. They built this library to look fancy for pictures so that Chinese state media and government funded 'influencers' can use it as propaganda - they can say "look at what our amazing China has built, meanwhile the US library looks like this *insert picture of abandoned library covered in trash*". But when you actually try and look at the place as a repository of books and historical documents which is what a library is supposed to be it's pathetic in comparison to what countries like the US and UK have. Plus they fail to mention that China has hardly any libraries compared to the UK or the US - there are like 3,000 public libraries total in the whole of China for over 1.4 billion people. The UK about 3,600 public libraries with a population 1/20th the size of Chinas population. The US has around 14,500 public libraries and their population is like 1/5th of the population of China. China trying to brag about their libraries is absolutely propaganda - they do not even come close to comparing to the countries they want to compare themselves to in the propaganda.

funny to note as a dutch person. looks weird for a library right? that's because its design is made for a school. an Aula or conference room design is usually used in Dutch schools as the gather place for students on lunch break or students who have a free hour or filled with students when announcements have to be made. it uses a typical coliseum like structure to provide enough sitting space for the entire school if need be. i know this because i am Dutch and this design is used in a lot of schools for its easy to build simplistic yet effective design. chairs are expensive so why not build a graphite/cement coliseum like steps structure, making the places to sit in its foundation of steps. the more you know ;)

Hey there! First off, I want to say how much I appreciate the content you create. It's clear you have a deep understanding of China, which comes from your impressive 14-year journey living there. Your experiences and insights are truly valuable to your viewers, and it's understandable that, given the constraints you faced, there might have been limitations on what you could openly discuss or criticize during your time there. However, as a newcomer to your channel, I've noticed a trend in the videos that focus predominantly on the negative aspects of China. While I fully recognize the importance of shedding light on these issues, this singular focus has painted a rather bleak picture of China for me. Knowing your balanced and nuanced perspective, I believe this may not be your intention to cast such a shadow over the place you chose to call home for a significant part of your life. Would it be possible for you to also share stories or insights into the positive experiences and aspects of China? There's undoubtedly a lot of beauty, culture, and kindness among the people and places there that would provide a more rounded perspective. Sharing such experiences could enrich our understanding of China beyond the negatives and show the complexity and diversity of the country. As I'm in the process of considering a move to China for work, and I must admit that the current focus of your videos is giving me second thoughts. Thanks again for all the hard work you put into your content. I look forward to seeing your future videos!

There is most likely something lost in the translation here. This is definitely never intended to be a library book storage area. This looks like some sort of a meeting hall with mild library theming. Like on a theme park level. Or mall holiday decoration level. There are several ways of organizing a functional library and this is most definitely not one of them. How would anyone find anything on curved racks with no markings? How would people access books around the CURVED domed ceiling if they actually were there? There is also no point of building a very tall book rack that could not be accessed with a short step-ladder. Such libraries did exist historically but were very unsafe to use, and so obsolete by many centuries. There is no way to build a safe movable ladder to get to all the books unless it's basically an industrial crane. And even if there was - fixed ladders are obviously blocking the way for at least some of them. How they are supposed to take the books out of behind or under the seats where people are already seating? The books will quickly get damp and moldy from a lot of people putting their wet outdoor clothes near them. My point is - whatever this room was designed to be used for - it is anything but actually storing books. The random paper books were probably thrown there just for aesthetics, no one is supposed to read them as you are not supposed to feed plastic animals in a kids play area. Furthermore, there is no use for public library buildings anymore, except for historic artifacts. Chinese people read books on their phones and tablets like everyone else in 2024. Is this confusion because Chinese propaganda machine just decided to throw some random pointless claim without thinking even a little? Can anyone with actual knowledge explain what this room actually is labeled as?
@StreakyBaconMan
@StreakyBaconMan 3 ай бұрын
It's almost funny that people think there must be a logical explanation for this - yes it clearly wasn't built with the primary intention of being a functional library. It was built with the primary intention of people THINKING it's a functional library that is superior to anything you'd find in western countries. It ACTUALLY being a functional library isn't nearly as important as it looking futuristic and beautiful in pictures because the purpose is to use it in propaganda, not provide a library for the local community to use.
@jwhite5008
@jwhite5008 3 ай бұрын
@@StreakyBaconMan From vague descriptions around the net I figured there is some other "traditional" section of this library which actually store books and allow borrowing - which has absolutely no photos whatsoever. And this atrium shown was first supposed to have many books all over it at first but then it was decided that actually storing books there is a bad idea (which it is) so it was left mostly empty of them, and access to upper shelves was not built leaving them to be purely decorative. I think it's a good thing too since this place already looks like somewhere you can slip and fall to your doom easily and without good reason.
@StreakyBaconMan
@StreakyBaconMan 3 ай бұрын
@@jwhite5008 Yeah I've seen people claim that this is just an atrium/entrance hall - but people who have actually BEEN there and have video footage of it say that is not the case and there is no main 'traditional' section hidden away. There are a few people who have videos and pictures of it and their defence of it is just that it isn't finished yet and one day it probably will have heaps of books. But quite apart from anything else, it just goes to show what the CCP find important. Lets say it is an atrium, and there is an actual library hidden away behind all that somewhere - why is it that they didn't feel it was important to show how good the library was and only how beautiful futuristic the atrium looked in the media? Because they don't care about the library part, they care about the futuristic beautiful looking part.

@@StreakyBaconMan You are saying they said they opened a library, but the actual library is closed, and there's only that atrium? Finda was yellow, and her hair was like the mane of a horse. She could not bend a tree, but where Lyda killed one lion she killed ten. Finda was seductive. Her voice was sweeter than any bird’s. Her eyes were alluring and enticing, but whoever looked upon them became her slave. Finda was unreasonable. She wrote thousands of laws, but she never obeyed one. She despised the frankness of the good, and gave herself up to flatterers. That was her misfortune. Her head was too full, but her heart was too vain. She loved nobody but herself, and she wished that all should love her. False Finda! Honey-sweet were her words, but those who trusted them found sorrow at hand. Selfish Finda! She wished to rule everybody, and her sons were like her. They made their sisters serve them, and they slew each other for the mastery. Treacherous Finda! One wrong word would irritate her, and the cruellest deeds did not affect her. If she saw a lizard swallow a spider, she shuddered; but if she saw her children kill a Frisian, her bosom swelled with pleasure. [17] Unfortunate Finda! She died in the bloom of her age, and the mode of her death is unknown. Hypocritical children! Her corpse was buried under a costly stone, pompous inscriptions were written on it, and loud lamentations were heard at it, but in private not a tear was shed. Despicable people! The laws that Finda established were written on golden tables, but the object for which they were made was never attained. The good laws were abolished, and selfishness instituted bad ones in their place. O Finda! then the earth overflowed with blood, and your children were mown down like grass. Yes, Finda! those were the fruits of your vanity. Look down from your watch-star and weep.
