i lived in henan 2004-2009. the people there are honorable, dignified, proud, and still mostly very poor. i was welcomed and treated well as a mandarin speaking American, and adopted a quasi-chinese lifestyle. learning to respect their culture and custom went a long way. they were an easy people to be compassionate towards. i am now, and forever, part henanese.

Are you sure? Food shortages and periodic famines have been reality for people everywhere in the world for thousands of years, before modern farming produced an abundance of food. There's nothing special about China in this respect.

I watch stuff like this because it reminds me how lucky I am to live in this time and in the United States. This man just say up here and said he was eating tree bark. Tree bark. Then we got people in America burning the flag, burning down buildings hating the country. They have no idea how lucky they are to be living in this time and in the country. A country that has provided so much comfort to me in my years on this earth. How can I hate America when it has been so good to me. This is unreal but it reminds me how lucky I am.

As a part of the USA government's genocide plan to wipe out the native Americans, it killed millions of wild bisons (buffalos) so millions of native Americans would starve to death! You have foods to eat in USA sumply because of the lands and natural resources robbed from the native Americans!

@@TheGreatOldOakBecause they never stood up for their rights. 3000 years of being slaves to emperors, kings and dictators. In Europe we had the first democracies 3000 years ago....in China they had emperors 3000 years ago..they had an emperor until the XIX century..and after that only dictators... Rise up China, conquer your freedom. Stop bowing down to lords and kings.

I don’t understand why this famine is greatly forgotten. Every time when people think of the great famine in China they think of the 1959 famine under Mao.

"Because Mandarin originated in North China and most Mandarin dialects are found in the north, the group is sometimes referred to as the Northern dialects. Many local Mandarin varieties are not mutually intelligible. Nevertheless, Mandarin is often placed first in lists of languages by number of native speakers " - wikipedia

thelifeofasuckywriter That was a different famine. This one occurred in Henan in 1942. The reason for it has been attributed to a combination of natural disasters and the fact that Henan had become a no-man's land that neither Chinese nor Japanese troops would enter.

I've never really understood the fascination of Mao and why people still to this day hang a picture of him on their wall. Such a cruel, selfish, and evil man. He allowed the National Party's army at the time, to win the war against the Japanese, then once they were spent, drove them away to claim the CCP/CPC victory, which partook in zero fights. He's an embarrassment to the Chinese people.
