On the occasion of celebrating the Chinese Navy 60th anniversary, a short video that was recorded by the Chinese navy in 1988 has been publicized by her state medien. It shows the actions of the Chinese navy in combat as the so called "self-defense" and conceals the reality of a massacre :
64 Vietnamese sailors were killed by 37mm anti-craft guns from Chinese warships in a few seconds.

Evidences of China's Crime: The Spratly Islands Massacre

With proven historical evidences and an uninterrupted possession, Vietnam has been exercising her sovereignty over the Spratly Islands in the East Vietnam Sea, which is also known as the " South China Sea". However, with continuing ambition for hegemony to control natural resources as well as sea transportation routes, China has brutally and inhumanely attacked Viet Nam, seriously violating Vietnams sovereignty and international laws. This real footage, which was taken by the China Navy during the invasion of the Spratly Islands on March 14th 1988, is an irrefutable proof of China Navys crime. Using overwhelming armed forces, the China Navy killed 64 under-equipped Vietnamese sailors, destroyed and prevented unarmed Vietnamese vessels from saving the injured. The movie has raised a question of criminal charges against the Chinese government, once led by Deng Xiao Ping, for the course of justice. In fact, this defending battle lasted for a few hours at three reefs nearby the island called Sin Cowe, one of the largest islands in the Spratly islands. The Spratly islands locate at a distance of over 1000 km far from the undermost Chinese coast at Hainan island and rightly belong to Vietnam for historical reasons.

In the early months of 1988, the Chinese Navy had landed troops on five reefs and atolls of the Spratly Islands. Three of them lie quite near the large islands that Vietnam owns. The Vietnamese Navy then ferried supplies and equipment to six other reefs and atolls. They successfully gained control of them and prevented the Chinese navy from extending their occupied zone into the other islands. In early March, the High Commander of Vietnamese navy decided to defend other three reefs because they were part of the Spratly Islands and forming an open chain of reefs around the Sin Cowe island that were in control of Vietnam. On March 13th, in the late evening, three Vietnamese transport ships arrived in time at those reefs and set up the flags to represent Vietnams sovereignty over them. However, some hours after the Vietnamese transport ships had reached the target, four large Chinese warships got close to the Vietnamese and switched on the warning loudspeaker. Despite threat from Chinese warships, the Vietnamese transport ships patiently kept anchoring beside the reefs. They were not powerful enough to confront with the Chinese navy and did not want to escalate the conflict. The Chinese were ordered to take an oath before they floated motor-boats with many heavy-armed marines in carrying out the conspiracy to provoke the Vietnamese to break out a war. The Chinese, especially soldiers, are taught that the ocean area of Spratly islands with more than two hundred islands, reefs and atolls belongs to China.
The strain continued until the next morning, when the Chinese mobilized more battle ships, and also more floated motor-boats. They caused more provocations for the battle to break out. By 06:00 am, they suddenly sent 3 aluminium boats that carried about 40 armed marines and rapidly rushed towards the reefs. They landed troops in front of Vietnamese sailor crews and tried to lower the Vietnamese flags that had been already planted into the reef-platform since last evening. Standing on the reefs where the water level covered half of their bodies, the Vietnamese sailors set up commanding positions along the edge of the reefs to lay the defending lines and try to prevent the enemy from advancing forward. They were threatened by the Chinese to retreat from the reefs. This intrusion caused strong reaction from the Vietnamese defenders to hold their flag. They determined to hold on to the reef and keep their flag flying at any cost. Unable to force the Vietnamese to leave the reef, the Chinese marines had to get back to their battle ships. And finally

Just because the Vietnamese navy had refused to withdraw from the reef, the Chinese used battleships for firing with 37-mm anti-aircraft guns directly at the unarmed and light armed Vietnamese sailors on the reefs who were not able to attack them from their defending positions.

South China Sea wasn't always call South China Sea. It was called Champa Sea or Sea of Cham before the 16th century. Merchants traveling threw the Champa Sea started call it South China Sea because it was South of China. Just because of the name South China Sea, didn't mean it all belong to China. Both of Paracel and Spratly were belong to Indochina/Annam colony of France, so after getting independence, Vietnam had full right to take these 2 islands back obviously. And South Vietnam did that and exercised legal control over these 2 islands until China came illegally in 1974 and 1988. This is the piece treaty of UN attempt to return all colonies to its initial country after WW2, and as a result, this treaty formed hundred of nowadays countries in the world. In the treaty Japan had to return all colonies back to original countries. Both of China and Vietnam asserted their claim on Hoàng Sa( Paracel Islands ) and Trường Sa ( Spratly Islands ) but China's claim was rejected by 45 out of 51 countries whereas Tran Van Huu, Prime Minister of Bao Dai’s government of Vietnam stated that “in order to annul the seeds of possible disputes, we claim our sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos”. No objections were raised nor any reservations made against his statement at the conference. France, in the victory side, also asserted the sovereignty of both of Paracel and Spratly Islands are belong to Annam of Vietnamese because Japan took over them from France. Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa was belong to South Vietnam from 1956 to 1974 and the entire UN, except China nor Russia, recognized and didn't oppose to them. In 1974 China illegally fought and invaded Hoàng Sa ( Paracel Islands) and fought Trường Sa (Spratly Islands) in 1988, but it could only occupy small part of Spratly Islands.

Where did you get the idea that the islands belong to Vietnam? China already declares sovereignty over the South China sea in 1911. At that time, there was no Communist Vietnam. You invaded someone else's land. Even Ho Chin Minh declared that the South China Sea belong to China in 1950.

China's ownership of these islands should be based on both sea wars in the history and the international sea law. To be honest, I can't be bother to explain to you about these facts. Then Vietnam started moving people to the islands, then star making claims, then things became complicated. As far as the war in 1988, my understanding was that China was only trying to build a weather monitoring device, then the Vietnamese moved in with their navy and start shooting Chinese. China was able to get help and won the war. At that time, China was at its weakest, but you guys had American Warships after they ran away. The Chinese Navy sent 33 people from Ship 502 and 25 from Ship 531. A total of 58 people landed on Chigua Reef. At 8 o'clock, personnel from both sides confronted each other on the reef. Li Chuqun, the political commissar of China's 502 ship, led seven soldiers to drive a small boat around the Vietnamese transport ship and approach the reef, and cut off the cables that tied the Vietnamese army's boarding boat to the reef. During the confrontation between the two sides, Du Xianghou, the squad leader of the anti-submarine squadron of the Chinese ship 531, pulled out the Vietnamese flag inserted on the reef. While the two sides were fighting for the flag, Yang Zhiliang, the deputy gunner of the Chinese ship 502, pushed away the gun aimed at by the Vietnamese army. Yang Zhiliang's left arm was shot through by a bullet. At 8:47, soldiers from both sides exchanged fire.

There is no evidences that China claim it until 1974 when they betrayed VietNam and Soviet Union, China normalize relations with the US that helps China invade Spratly island in 1974. I'm not going to comment about the massacre itself, but I do wonder about the Chinese claim to the area. The Chinese claim these reefs were found by the Chinese from the Han dynasty. But then if they stick to the Han dynasty territories, their land mass would be a lot smaller. They seem to conveniently bring up their entire 6000 year history to claim as large an area as it possibly can. It's like Italy today claiming the entire area of the old Roman Empire. If Turkey, Iran, Greece, Britain all did that, then the Ottoman, Persian, Greek, and British Empires would all overlap. International law is there to stop that. I think China should either choose a period of history to judge their claim, or come to the ICJ and follow the rulings.

Vietnamese already continously administrated both of 2 these islands since 17th century and no single country except VN claimed those at that time. Both of Paracel and Spratly were belong to Indochina/Annam colony of France, so after getting independence, Vietnam had full right to take these 2 islands back obviously. And South Vietnam did that and exercised legal control over these 2 islands until China came illegally in 1974 and 1988. And I want to make it clear that Vietnam does not claim entire SCS, we only claim our 200 nautical mile EEZ + our these 2 islands which lay outside of our EEZ( but as I said EEZ can't apply for islands). Even a lot of messy problems arising until now after Chinese came and some other countries claimed based on EEZ, hope Vietnam and other countries involving can avoid conflict as much as possible More detail about San Francisco Conference : The conference was joined by 51 countries around the world. This is the piece treaty of UN attempt to return all colonies to its initial country after WW2, and as a result, this treaty formed hundred of nowadays countries in the world. In the treaty Japan had to return all colonies back to original countries. Both of China and Vietnam asserted their claim on Hoàng Sa( Paracel Islands ) and Trường Sa ( Spratly Islands ) but China's claim was rejected by 45 out of 51 countries whereas Tran Van Huu, Prime Minister of Bao Dai’s government of Vietnam stated that “in order to annul the seeds of possible disputes, we claim our sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos”. No objections were raised nor any reservations made against his statement at the conference. France, in the victory side, also asserted the sovereignty of both of Paracel and Spratly Islands are belong to Annam of Vietnamese because Japan took over them from France. Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa was belong to South Vietnam from 1956 to 1974 and the entire UN, except China nor Russia, recognized and didn't oppose to them. In 1974 China illegally fought and invaded Hoàng Sa ( Paracel Islands) and fought Trường Sa (Spratly Islands) in 1988, but it could only occupy small part of Spratly Islands.

Vietnamese already continously administrated both of 2 these islands since 17th century and no single country except VN claimed those at that time. Vietnam illegally seized 10 islands and reefs in the Spratly islands from 1971 to 1978 and another 11 features in the 1980s. In the 1990s, it built 12 structures patterned after oil rigs but modified to be military outposts, in eight submerged banks. China's policy toward South China Sea since Deng Xiaoping is "lay the disputes aside and exploit together". The most famous event for Chinese to explore SC Sea is "Zheng He's Voyages". Zheng He (1371-1433 or 1435), formerly romanized as Cheng Ho, was a Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, fleet admiral, and court eunuch during China's early Ming dynasty. He was originally born as Ma He in a Muslim family, later adopted the conferred surname Zheng from Emperor Yongle. Zheng commanded expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Western Asia, and East Africa from 1405 to 1433. His larger ships stretched 120 meters or more in length. These carried hundreds of sailors on four tiers of decks. South China sea is very important "belt" for old Chinese's trade route. "China" as porcelain can be found in many places on land or under water along the old "belt" trade route. If you think China should claim a small part of SCS then China can get peace with other countries? Which small part? If we claim small part of SC Sea, it is not reasonable. In the ancient time, Chinese ancestor's activity/navigation is not restricted to a small part or to a fixed sea route. Most islands or coral reef are claimed after WW2, or after WW1. But Chinese has relationship with SCS is 1500 years earlier than most of the claims.?

China was not the one fired the first shot. Where did you get the idea that innocent Vietnamese people were shot? At 6 a.m. on March 14, 1988, the Vietnamese navy took advantage of the low tide to board Chigua Reef, and the No. 604 armed transport ship dispatched 43 people. The Chinese Navy sent 33 people from Ship 502 and 25 from Ship 531. A total of 58 people landed on Chigua Reef. At 8 o'clock, personnel from both sides confronted each other on the reef. Li Chuqun, the political commissar of China's 502 ship, led seven soldiers to drive a small boat around the Vietnamese transport ship and approach the reef, and cut off the cables that tied the Vietnamese army's boarding boat to the reef. During the confrontation between the two sides, Du Xianghou, the squad leader of the anti-submarine squadron of the Chinese ship 531, pulled out the Vietnamese flag inserted on the reef. While the two sides were fighting for the flag, Yang Zhiliang, the deputy gunner of the Chinese ship 502, pushed away the gun aimed at by the Vietnamese army. Yang Zhiliang's left arm was shot through by a bullet. At 8:47, soldiers from both sides exchanged fire. The machine guns on the Vietnamese ship 604 also fired on the reef. At 8:48, the Chinese navy ship 502 also fired back. After 4 minutes, the Vietnamese Army Ship 604 caught fire and sank 8 minutes later. Then more than 40 Vietnamese soldiers boarded the reef and expressed their surrender. The Chinese Navy Ship 531 exchanged fire with the Vietnam 505 landing ship at a distance of 30 chains. After the Chinese Navy 502 ship sank the Vietnam 604 ship, it also turned its muzzle to shoot at the Vietnam 505 landing ship. The hull of the Vietnamese ship 505 caught fire, and the gun positions on the ship were destroyed. In order to avoid sinking, it ran aground on the nearby Ghost Shouting Reef. The main reason why Vietnam Navy Ship 505 was not sunk was that the Chinese Ship 531 caused multiple failures on the whole ship due to the vibration of the artillery shooting, which caused the main gun to stop firing. Vietnamese ship 605 sank that night. During the battle, the three warships of the Chinese Navy consumed a total of 285 rounds of 100mm shells and 266 rounds of 37mm shells.
