The Sino-Vietnamese War was a border war fought between China and Vietnam in early 1979. China launched an offensive in response to Vietnam's actions against the Khmer Rouge in 1978, which ended the rule of the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge.

February 21, 1979 - With the arrival of an additional eight divisions, Chinese forces renew their offensive

March 4, 1979 - Chinese forces capture Lang Son after bitter house-to-house fighting
March 5, 1979 - China orders its forces to withdraw from Vietnam

Two battles that happened in the 1980s June 1980 - When Vietnamese forces in Cambodia attacked the Khmer Rouge bases along the Cambodia-Thailand border, the PLA launched operations in Vietnam’s Lang Son and Ha Tuyen Provinces. PLA attacks provoked Vietnam to retaliate by attacking border regions in China’s Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces. In these battles, both sides lost hundreds of soldiers killed. April-July 1984 - Major battles again broke out when Chinese forces attacked the border areas in Lang Son and Ha Tuyen Provinces in retaliation for the Vietnamese dry season offensive in Cambodia, which together with its 1985 offensive, destroyed nearly all Khmer rebel bases in Cambodia. The PLA advanced some 2-3 kilometers into Vietnam in battles that involved battle tanks

@人才 innitially yes, but as the war drag on, the percentage of weapons supplied to us was from the USSR and the Warsaw pact. That’s how we get the S-75, ZSU-37-2, ZSU-23-4. And 90%? Don’t, just don’t. If 90% of our weapon is from china, we would not have won. Yes, chinese weapons take up a large percentage, but the amount is not that large. The soviet shipped weapons to us through many way, by sea and rails. We were supplied with enough weapons to sustain the war. For example, the armoured force of vietnam at the time consist of mostly T-54/55 and Type-59, but, the amount of T-54/55 is about double the amount of Type-59 (about 600 T-54/55 to about 350 Type-59 in that time period). The Vietnam’s People Airforce as well. Our aircrafts mostly consist of Mig-17 and Mig-21, with just a couple of Mig-19. Firearms is in the same situation. We used alot of soviet and chinese supplied weapons as well as enemy’s captured ones, so 90% is a number that even dream, no one can think of. The real estimate should be in the area of 35-45%.

Although USSR had a military agreement with Vietnam, it didn't become involved in the war because it saw that China launched only a limited invasion (not full-scale invasion). They most likely would have intervened if China continued to advance to Hanoi. After China captured Lang Son, they said that the road to Hanoi was open. But they declared the war was over and withdrew back across the border. So Russia was watching closely if Beijing would keep its promise of conducting only a limited war.

As an American, I believe the US made a huge mistake in not supporting Ho Chi Minh when he pleaded for help from Harry Truman in 1946 to stop the re-colonization by the French. The French in 1946 should've been concerned with rebuilding their own country not subjugating another, obviously the irony was lost on them. All Ho wanted was the freedom and independence of Vietnam. Had that happened in 1946 there would've been so much less bloodshed and sorrow in Vietnamese and American homes.

So it turned to the US, which was an enemy of Vietnam and the Soviet Union. By attacking Vietnam, China showed the US that they were taking sides. However, China and Vietnam used to help each other as communists. So, China needed an excuse to attack Vietnam, and they had it when the Pol-Pot troop, who was sponsored and a vassal of China, attacked Vietnam. Vietnam fought back, and China accused Vietnam of invading Cambodia. Then China attacked North Vietnam, and the folks had to defend themselves because the Vietnamese troops were in Cambodia. Fortunately, the experienced Vietnamese, after centuries of wars + the defeated US retreated from Vietnam, leaving behind a huge amount of weapons that helped the Vietnamese folk against Chinese troops until Vietnam troops came. Eventually, the Chinese had to fall back. But China gained the favor of the US to help develop its economy, and now they have the second-largest economy in the world. That's why the Chinese always said they had fulfilled their objectives and won the war, although they couldn't go deep into the mainland of Vietnam, and many lives were lost

China greatly helped Vietnam win the wars against France and USA. Without the support from China while USSR is far away, Vietnam could not have unified. Why Vietnam hated China so much? Vietnam wants to unify Indo-China Peninsula by occupying Cambodia, Laos and Thai maybe but China didn't allow. Vietnam sees China the biggest obstacle of unifying Indo-China Peninsula . Meanwhile USSR was not in good relationship with China so supported Vietnam against China. Vietnam invaded Cambodia, oppressed the Vietnam Chinese and harassed the Chinese border, China then had to gave Vietnam a limited military punishment after getting the understanding of USA and the west.
