I listened to Zeihan’s audio book… he goes into detail about every country like this… definitely worth a read or listen!

3:32 Mao Zedong died in 1976, the one child policy was established *three* years later in 1979. It wasn't Mao, it was Deng Xiaoping who rolled it out. Mao wasn't concerned about anything. As a matter of fact, Mao encouraged large families: he outlawed abortion and the use of contraception. Under Mao, mothers who gave birth to more than 10 children would receive medals from the state. In short: no, it wasn't Mao. But that's just Zeihan for you. Listening to him is a perfect illustration of the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect: The phenomenon of people trusting newspapers for topics which they are not knowledgeable about, despite recognizing them to be extremely inaccurate on certain topics which they are knowledgeable about. You listen to Zeihan thinking to yourself "wow! This man is brilliant" then he starts talking about something you have some expertise on and you think "wait, wtf? he's just spewing total nonsense right now" then he again switches topics to something you know nothing about and you return to thinking "Wow! That Zeihan guy is so brilliant." To drive this point even further: there's this website where people make predictions that keeps the tally of who the best forecasters of world events are. It's called "metaculus". Zeihan is considered a joke in that community.

It’s funny because I used to think the exact same thing, his way of talking has such a presence that makes me feel trustworthy. Until he posts a video on the right-wing victories in Europe and tries to explain it with the birth rate and economics and population collapse and it’s like, uh… no. Literally just immigration. Europeans are tired of Muslims who leech off their generous social systems.

Yep. I was initially impressed by him, but then cracks started to reveal themselves. I still watch his stuff, but I take it with a grain of salt and cross check it. Over time, I have also noticed that he tends to bring his biases in, even though he pretends to not do it.

Quick read of the one child policy on Wikipedia shows that many of the family planning programs that eventually led to China's one child policy began in the 70's under Mao. So while you are correct that China's one child policy was not enacted under Mao, many of its predecessor efforts were. There was a time during the Great Leap Forward where Mao was encouraging as many births as possible, but Mao's stance changed dramatically in the 1970's. Peter is technically right here.

Because it doesn't make any sense. Now there isn't a strategic threat to the US. Short of a nuclear war US is safe. In the case of a nuclear war, we're all dead so if doesn't matter. After USSR fell, US still did it because there was an international order and one hegemon in charge and everybody played along. Now countries like China is taking that strategic overwatch and working actively against the US. So no longer does it serve American strategic interest, it's also working actively against it.

At the end of WW2 the US met the various countries involved in war. Instead of taking them over as colonies (as was the custom for millenia) the offered then Bretton Woods Agreement: the US would offer protected shipping lanes with their Navy, member states would have access to the US markets (only country left standing), members would be protected militarily if need be (Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War 1) in exchange for being ally to US against USSR, accepting that the US will write all security agreements for each country, and the US would be currency used. Once the USSR fell, the US didn't have to worry about them anymore and the US started moving away from the world. The US pulled out of the middle East (shale revolution made US energy independent) and no longer will guarantee free global trade to anyone except closest allies (England, Australia, Japan, and possibly singapore). According to Peter, once Russian federarion falls, the US will become isolationist for the next 20 years. Piracy and privateers will return and the US will welcome the chaos that comes will keep the US as the hegemony of the world. China will fall. Africa will suffer famine and Europe will revisit its former colonies. SWA will be screwed. Iran and Saudi Arabia will go to war. Energy supplies will dwindle. Specific to your question: the US Navy is blue focused on aircraft carriers that they can use to destroy nations and away. They are no longer creating destroyers (only 80) and need 700 to patrol the oceans.

I was going to reply but OBCANE nailed iI. TLDR We used to be the world's coast guard to bribe people to help us against the soviets. It worked so we don't care anymore. And the shale/fracking revolution has freed us from dependence upon Arabian oil.

So I live in China, and you are wrong. The average age of marriage in the big cities is in the low 30's, and most couples have maybe one kid after marriage... and an increasing amount of people - none. The only people I've met who have more than one kid are extremely financially well-off. Zeihan is a bit hyperbolic on the result but his analysis on demographic structure is spot on. 1 child policy + insanely fast urbanization killed the birthrate here.
