CN gov tranfered tons of money to Xinjiang to support its development since 1950s, while most other provinces actually turn in money towards the central revenue.
@GoodCitizen-gm1tl3 күн бұрын
1. Xinjiang was a vast territory whose ownership frequently changed hands throughout history. However, most of the time, they were in the hands of the nomads of mixed ethnicities. It was conquered by the Han Chinese multiple times though. The earliest conquest was in the Han dynasty (200BC-200 AD) and also the Tang dynasty (600AD-900 AD), both dynaties were considered the peaks of the Chinese civilization in terms of economical , military, technological and cultural power. However, after the Tang, Xinjiang was controlled by the nomads of mixed ethnicities again until it was absorbed into China in the 1700s. 2. In the 1700s, Northern Xinjiang was controlled by the Dzungar, a branch of the Mongolian people and Southern Xinjiang was controlled by the Uyghur. The Dzungar often invaded the Uyghur-controled region and enslaved them. So when the Qing dynasty fought wars with the Dzungar, the Uyghur provided intelligence and assistances. Besides the two major ethnicties, there were also many other ethnicities living there. Many people may assume the entire Xinjiang was Uyghur land, which was wrong. China's Qing dynasty conquered both regions and incorporated them into a single province of Xinjiang. 3. The Uyghur are actually not native to Southern Xinjiang, they were also immigrants to the reigion in the 700-800 AD from the Mongolian Paletaeu. Over 1000 years later than the earliest Han Chinese presence in the region. 4. Today, the demographic of Northern Xinjiang was featured by a majority of Han Chinese immigrants and that of South Xinjiang was featured by overwhelmingly Uyghur. In the whole province, Han Chinese (42%) and Uyghur (44%) are now almost reaching equal ratio in population, with the Mongolian (5%), the Kazak (4%) and others (5%) sharing the rest. 5. The Uyghur speak Mandarin Chinese with the Han Chinese, Mongolians, Kazak and others in the society and speak Uyghur at home and in their own community. The medium of education in schools are Mandarin Chinese for most of the subjects and Uyghur for the Uyghur-related courses. In the past, Mandarin wasn't taught so widely in ethnic minority schools across China and the senior generations couldn't understand Mandarin well which hindered their access to opportunities in careers and businesses. So in these years, Mandarin education became more widespread in the ethnic minority regions. . 6. Before Islamification of the region, Buddhism was actually the mainstream religion of Xinjiang. However, Buddhism was gone after Islam took over.

Uyghurs only account for 40% of Xinjiang's population, and the other 60% belong to more than 30 other ethnic groups. Therefore, in Xinjiang, Tajiks, Kazakhs, Russians and Han ethnic groups of Central Asian appearance all live in Xinjiang, where many ethnic groups gather in ancient times, instead of the Western media saying that it is only the territory of Uyghurs. 2000 years ago, it was already a county in China during the Han Dynasty. It is equivalent to the central province, because the silk trade was very prosperous at that time, resulting in a large number of people from the East and the West to migrate here.

Great to see you visiting Urumqi and thanks for the thoughtful video! It’s funny that as a Chinese I haven’t been there myself and I am literally learning about the place from your videos. One suggestion I would make though is that we generally use “Chinese” as an umbrella term for all Chinese people regardless of their ethnicity. When you compare Uyghur culture to things you see in other parts of China it is a bit weird using “Uyghur” and “Chinese” in parallel. Better to say Uyghur and Han, or just something like Xinjiang and Shanghai cuz Han culture is also vastly different across the country. Additionally, although the Uyghur and the Han are the two most populated ethnic groups in Xinjiang, Xinjiang is actually the home to ~17 other ethnic minorities with smaller populations. These include the Tajik, the Uzbek, the Hui, the Mongolian, the Russian, just to name a few. In other words, not every face you see that doesn’t look like a Han person is necessarily an Uyghur. Anyways, I hope you have a great trip and enjoy your time traveling around China!❤

Early Rule: During the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), Xinjiang was brought under Chinese influence through the establishment of the Protectorate of the Western Regions. This marked one of the earliest instances of Chinese governance in the area. Control over Xinjiang fluctuated over centuries due to the rise and fall of Chinese dynasties and the presence of various local powers. Integration During the Qing Dynasty: In 1759, under Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the region was fully incorporated into Chinese rule after the defeat of the Dzungar Khanate (a Mongolian power in the region). After the Qing's military conquest, Xinjiang became part of the Qing Empire's territory and was governed directly. Establishment of Xinjiang Province: In 1884, following the suppression of the rebellion led by Yakub Beg and the recapture of the region by General Zuo Zongtang, the Qing government formally established Xinjiang as a province. This marked its modern administrative integration into China's territorial framework.

Xinjiang has been part of China since the 18th century, when the Qing dynasty established control over the region. However, the region has had a history of independence and autonomy, and the Chinese government's claim to the region is disputed by some: 1st century B.C.: Chinese rulers first entered the region to push out the Huns. 2nd century: China lost Xinjiang to Uzbek invaders. 7th century: China retook the region. Mid-700s: The Uighurs seized power from the Gok Turks and established an independent kingdom. 1759: The Qing dynasty established control over the region after a century of war with the Zunghars. 1912: Xinjiang became a province of the Republic of China. 1949: The People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded and Xinjiang was liberated peacefully. The Chinese government claims that Xinjiang has been an "inseparable" part of China for more than 2,000 years.

Urumqi has more Han Chinese than Uyghur because this city was created by Han Chinese, the current Urumqi was built by Qing Dynasty in year 1755, by the expedition army, an army constitute of Han Chinese and Manchurian, the location of Urumqi has always been crucial, China first set up military hub at places nearby current Urumqi around 2200 years ago, then around 6th century China set up their Northen command 10km south of today's Urumqi too, as an important Political and Military hub, historically this city has not been very welcoming for migrants other than Han and Manchurian, When Qing Dynasty gradually lost control over Urumqi during the late 18th and19th century, riots and massacres happened in the region, Han and Manchurian were slaughtered and many fled back into the mainland, Han Chinese population only started to increase again after the Republic of China took control over Urumqi in the midst of their civil war

The Grand Bazaar is meant to showcase the Uyghur culture and history whilst the rest of Urumqi reflects the Uyghur and Han Chinese lives and livelihoods. The red tower is known as a pagaoda.

What you see now in Urumqi is a third-tier city, but you know that without strict control, this city could very well become like Syria or Gaza. If you ask me why I don't know, you should ask people in E. Turkestan or isis or Sam...

Agre with you about toilet, in China, you can find public toilet everywhere, in metro and train stations, they are clean. In my country, France, if you do not consume at a café or restaurant, no toilet. In train stations, there are a few toilets but you have to pay to use.... And for the VPN, Astrill works great ! Express VPN didn't work well for me.

Is Google translate working for you in Xinjiang? You mentioned it around minute 21. What about other Google services like maps? I had heard Google didn't work anywhere in China. If not, what apps are you using for maps, directions, transit, translation, etc? Nice travelogue, thanks for posting.

In general, Google stuff doesn't work in China. There are a couple of options to get around this - the first is using a VPN and the second is using a data enabled SIM card from a service provider outside China - doing that, I could access Google and other sites even when I was roaming on a Chinese network.
