I'm a Black American that has worked and lived full time for 16+ years in China with no plans of heading back to the States any time soon.... Really enjoyed your video and glad to see your fresh prospective without some of the "hate" or "negative" comments you see from others that posted about life in China. I want to add a few more positives from my years in China: (1) Safety ... I feel my wife (who is Chinese) and our two daughters can walk freely without the fear of being mugged or a victim of violent crime. (2) Higher moral standards in general within China's society. No country is perfect but if you have an open mind and understand you are a "guest" in China it can be a wonderful experience. Keep posting Bro

Sorry to say, but this video misses one big reason why many people love to live in China. One word: Safety. Despite Western mainstream media's depiction of the country, China is a very safe country and the Chinese society is a very non-violent society. You may tense up when you see the PoPo in China, especially if you have had bad experiences with the PoPo back home. But the Chinese PoPo don't do "Stop and Frisk". Amazing I know!

@@jaydee6268 Where in my comment did I unequivocaly say that China is better over another country??? Furthermore, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Republic of China in Taiwan are also very safe places and non-violent societies. Does that mean they also lack freedom? Many foreigners (especially Americans who think they are exceptional) are living in a bubble in China. China has 56 distinct ethnic groups with different languages, customs, culture and food. Just because they all look the same to them doesn't mean there is no diversity. If a Chinese from a province travels across China, he may feel like a foreigner in another province because most of them speak their own dialect and language which are intelligible to other Chinese from other provinces on top of the differing customs, culture and food. The reason most foreigners do not know this, is because they don't speak the language, they have superficial understanding of the Chinese culture and customs and they only hang around among themselves in their expat bubble communities.
@andrewchayles Жыл бұрын
Yes. I know this about those 56 distinct ethnic groups. I didn’t mention it because it only makes up the other 8 percent of China’s society. The rest make up the other 92 percent I mentioned in the video. This video is specifically for American expats interested in visiting or living in China. It’s aimed toward their views my friend so when compared to America, China is not as diverse. Thanks for sharing 🙂
@bldomain Жыл бұрын
Even among the 92% Han ethnic group, there are so much diversity. For example I am a Cantonese and when I go to Szechuan province I usually don't know what they are saying most of the time (especially the elders) unless I speak Mandarin to them. Food is different too and it is a lot spicier than Cantonese food. However I do agree that China is not as diverse as in America but don't say it lack diversity. This perpetuate the stereotype that all Chinese are the same. China is like Europe if Europe is a country. America is like Noah Ark - full of different animals. Unfortunately, most Americans especially the Whites do not like diversity and racisms is ingrained in the society. Most Americans choose to live among their own kind and have no interest whatsoever with people from other communities.@@andrewchayles

There is a tremendous amount of diversity even among the majority Han Chinese. Diversity in language, culinary, social habits, customs, etc. Black Americans is a diverse group, is it not? Despite a lot of shared experience and history? So why is the 1 billion plus Han Chinese a monolith?
@johnyossarian9059 Жыл бұрын
With said, I acknowledge that this diversity within the Han Chinese population is harder for an expat to see.

To you, they are a monolith because you don't know much about the Han Chinese. To the Chinese, Europeans are monolith too. They can't tell the difference between a Spaniard, English and an Italian. They too don't really know much about Europeans.@@johnyossarian9059

I'm in the process of moving to China and I am conflicted. There are English training centers that take your weekend and there are schools with regular working hours. If I take the training center position will I enjoy China and have a good social? I need some advice. I'm also an African American male and excited to experience a different way of life in China.
@oberstleutnant787 Жыл бұрын
China already has enough blacks from Africa living in Guangzhou.
@ruedelta Жыл бұрын
Chinese American here. It's hard to give advice without particulars, especially what you're looking for. The school will help you integrate more and maybe develop a guanxi network (necessary past 5 years). The training center is probably better if you only want to be there for a short time (2-3 years). The higher up you are on the academic totem pole, the MUCH better you will be respected. If you manage to say, teach as a professor in one of the top universities, you are basically a god walking among men. The way professors work in China is that they are also constantly partnering with businesses, especially new ones, and all businesses that start up want professors to sign on to give them a good social face (so you can see the power you'd wield). Otherwise, if you're looking at the normal life and being relaxed, just look out for a niche and make sure you are loyal to the people in that niche. Right now I will say for sure, if you are a STEM major with some good academic credentials (state schools are good), look into doing graduate/post-grad studies in China. Apply for the CSC scholarship - you are basically guaranteed to get a full ride + stipend. The country is looking for these types right now so it is super hot, super well respected, and extremely low supply.

But I did teach English there however the pay ok by their standards but it wasn't enough to pay the kinds of bills I pay here for healthcare, housing and transportation too food.
