I also live in China, for 30+ years, apart from the never-ending covid measures, it's a wonderful country to live in. Food is fantastic, people are friendly, life is easygoing, and violent crime is almost nonexistent, at least where I have been. Like any other country, it has its downsides but what country doesn't? It's far different from what the media says which concerns living standards and living quality. I normally say it is a country with several countries inside. If you have nothing to hide or thinking of doing wrong you have nothing to fear. Don't mess with politics and rules and you can have a fantastic life.

I'm also a western expat, for the last decade living in East Asia, and I agree it's awesome but don't mess with the politics or rules. However, today I'd say the same about my homeland which has become a police state where my countrymen fear the cops unlike here in Asia where cops actually are there to help & protect, instead of harassing & striking fear into citizens.

The following article is written by Ismail Bashmori, he is an Egyptian China watcher. The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilised, and best-governed by far. It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis. Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl. China is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically.。 China is also standing up to the West all by herself. The West can’t believe their four-hundred-year-old global supremacy is being challenged. They hoped that the more China developed, the more it would submit to their influence, interests, and leadership. That didn’t happen. So now they will do anything possible, short of a nuclear war, to make China end. Their goal is to destroy this country. That’s why, although the United States has killed several million people and turned several regions of the earth into hellscapes. China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979. China is the only major country in the nonwhite developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened. The Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago. Even the most powerful ones. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India. The 1500s-1000s BC were Egypt’s time. Antiquity belonged to the Greeks and Romans. The 1700s belonged to France, and the 1800s to Britain. From 1945 to the present, the world has been under American overlordship. And they call it the Pax Americana but there isn’t much Pax in it. There’s plenty of Pax if you’re in Europe or Australia. But the Middle East? Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran and Yemen in the past 20 years. Latin America? They’ve destroyed that part of the world beyond any hope of recovery. Africa? It’s only been spared because of disinterest. The US sees Africa as nothing. The whole West does. But in the twenty-first century, we are witnessing the rise of China. We are decades away from China becoming the greatest power on earth. This will be China’s time, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Attack China all you want, curse her and monger rumours and hysteria - but the truth is that none of your accusations are backed up by evidence. The Western press is under the thumb of Western governments that want to stay on top of the world for eternity. And the truth is that China is not affected by the noise and maneuvers of her enemies. For her first thirty years, from 1949 to 1979, China was basically blockaded and isolated economically and politically by the West. It didn’t even have a seat in the UN General Assembly. And it was dirt-poor in those days, barely a speck of the global economy, a tiny fraction of Japan’s or Germany’s GDP - not even able to prevent famine. And it still didn’t submit to pressure or take any orders. Why on earth would it do that now? China will be the next global power. There’s nothing that can be done about that. The first stage is that its economy only needs to grow at 4.7 percent per year to become the world’s largest by 2035. That means the usual, historical bare-minimum of 6 percent is already overkill. The US can build as many bases as it wants, slap as many sanctions as it wants, recognise whatever bogus genocides it wants. That’s what it’s been doing all along. Has any of it made a difference? China can adapt to any situation. It took China a mere ten years to go from being barred by the US Congress from participating in the “International” Space Station, to building its own Space Station from zero. Above only part of the article, you can read the full article under the following link. www.dailyexpress.com.my/read/4459/west-can-t-believe-nor-accept-china-s-progress/?fbclid=IwAR3aJYSZC3rbUgM1NwHCO73XxnNzNkJPa9wrSsFp-4KMxTozuJiHBwLJDXU

ISmail Bsshmori, the Egyptian writer is absolutely right. He writes with perfect lucidity all that he knows about China which is sound and solidly historical now. Except, I would like this revered Égyptian writer to read up about Pre Han China, going back to King Wen of the Zhou dynasty - abt 4000 - 5000 B.C. King Wen studied the 64 hexagrams of the " I Ching " - transl "The Book of Changes," which deals with reading the oracle and divining future events from the hexagrams based on the interactions of the principles of the Yang-unbroken line rep. Heaven, male, assertive, hard, majestic etc. and the Yin, broken line rep. the Earth, female, receptive soft, submissive etc. King Wen proved that some of the hexagrams contain examples of Quantum Physics and he worked out The Wave Theory from the hexagrams... At that time China was already using technology and running industries. King Wen was interested in Science... Other than this, I really appreciate Ismail's heaps of superlatives for China and his recognition of the greatness and the wonderful things China brings to our world.

I live and grew up in Eastern Europe. If in the UK, the 3rd richest country in the EU, things are not changing and growing very slowly, where I am things are even worse.. I can even say that China is not only its own continent, but even its own planet, its own reality. With its own internet, its own social media, its own content. So many cultures, traditions, customs, minorities, types of food, levels of social and cultural development. So many projects, so much infrastructure that never stops being built. So much natural and geographical diversity. You can go to amazing snowy landscapes, play winter sports, straight to the desert or the beach. And one party, so people have absolutely no worries about the political environment because they know the party is the people, and the party works for the people. In a country so safe, so digital, so convenient, where things are always happening and things change.. All this, in a country that's the largest by population on the planet, and the world's 2nd largest economy, soon to be first. How you, as a resident of such a country in such a context, fall asleep at night on your pillow when you know these things.. I honestly envy you, as an environmental engineering graduate, 23 years old, that you can enjoy all these conditions that China offers you (while I stay here, and have a more than nightmarish outlook about the future).. ;(

@@livinlavidaluke Thanks man, appreciate it, same to you. You pulled the lucky ticket, given that you're in China these days. The world outside of China is getting more and more chaotic (and the problem isn't that it's that way now, but that it only seems to get worse, and also that it will never go back to the way it was). Inflation is exploding, we can barely afford basic food. The gas, fuel and electricity bills are insane, and if you don't have your own apartment or house, and you have to pay rent, or you want to buy an apartment by taking out a bank loan, oh boy... The most affected are the elderly, mostly with low pensions, or people without higher education, working on minimum wage (and given that this is Eastern Europe, they are the majority). This makes the government invest even less than it used to in infrastructure (and as you probably know even from the UK, very little used to happen). Railways, roads are getting worse and worse. We have this like 2nd largest city in the country, which has no metro (only the capital has one, and that one was built in fucking 1979 when the communists were in power, and after their fall it obviously hasn't been developed at all), which they keep talking about building from like 2015 until now. Obviously it's not built to this day, and it doesn't look like it will be in the distant future, especially now with this period. Here we have to wait like 3-5 years if we want like 10-15 km of highway to be done. In the meantime, in 2024 we have 3 elections, the ones where we elect city leaders, choose which party will have a majority in parliament, but also the president. And obviously, the same old corrupt, populist, nepotistic and incompetent parties will win the majority and still rule the country until 2028, because the better alternative is not popularized enough in the media (and they also feel a bit powerless and hopeless), since the old parties have bought up all the 'free' media in the country, so the new parties are not invited to debates or promoted publicly, and what the members of the old parties do wrong is not shown on TV, simply because the news ignores news like that, and instead they talk about other things. So yeah, it's a lot of fun here :D

Hi Luke, just found your latest vlog in my feed. As a fellow Brit who left the UK 33 years ago to start traveling, I echo your appreciation of China. Having now lived here for close to 16 years I love life here. There's always new pastures to explore (Covid permitting) and an amazingly varied geography, culture and history along with an extremely friendly and welcoming population. Most Westerners form their opinion of China from the extremely biased news reports on the BBC, CNN and other western social media. I'd encourage anyone who's never visited to save up their pennies and consider visiting here especially as the Covid rules are now becoming more relaxed. Be prepared for some cultural shock for sure but that's part of the fun. My little channel might be worth a visit too if you have time. James - PhotoLX

Thanks Luke for making this timely video. I am an English educated Singaporean with a western mindset and my view of China is that of a country that was rigid, poor, underdeveloped and the people materialistic. Never was the country in my tour bucket list. However I had colleagues who traveled there for work spoke otherwise. I even met a German tourist who spoke perfect Mandarin told me Beijing is worth visiting. My perception change few years back when I met some mainland Chinese whose diligent work ethnics and resourcefulness absolutely blown me away, then I start to read up news from Chinese social media and foreign KZbinr and my view start to broaden. First time i paid visit to Changsha, Fujian and Beijing and i just love it. I became more positive because i could see the country has really evolved. Although the government is communist but i realize they are not the same communist hardliners that ruled in the 70s, 80s and 90s. As far as I can see at least the current leaders try to work for the public good and ruling a very populated and diversed country is never easy. i can understand why certain measures of strict law and order has to be imposed.

CN is actually a lot like Singapore, except it has a different official selection process and it is a zillion times larger than Singapore with huge disparities between different areas, a 5 million $ portfolio is quite different from a 1.4 billion $ portfolio. A western learning about the real China and is fascinated. Keep learning. For thousands of years foreigners came to learn culture, technology, and food among other things. They came from the under-devloped west to China, the pinnacle of human civilisation, history, and culture. This is the norm. China is regaining her rightful place in the world as both a world power and the center of human development. She calls herself the middle kingdom for a reason.

My first visit to China was in the late 1990’s with my university professor who was a Beijing native, and he was probably the best tour guide any one could ask for, introducing us to China with a socio-economic and cultural angle that spoke to us and helped us better understand that phase of rapid economic expansion in China. In the years after that I paid a few more visits to a few major cities from Shanghai to Beijing, hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing and harbin. Those were all memorable visits, but the parts I liked most were the smaller towns we stopped by along the way, preserved Ming/Qing villages and random farmhouses where we had meals… China is a place I would love to continue to visit just because there is so much I didn’t know I wanted to see or experience.
