Why are so many of the photos / video pieces in this video not showing the United States or China (but are rather apparently showing scenery from India), although this whole video is about the United States and China ?

I'm very disappointed and frankly fail to understand how someone of Mr Varoufakis' acumen would be so hung up on the word democracy. Perhaps it's the emotional attachment to the historical, Greek origins of δημοκρατία. The system, as practised in the West today, is totally bankrupt. No amount of PR is able to cover up what it has degenerated into. To use the title from one of Mr Varoufakis' videos, Europe has become totally irrelevant mired in a crisis it has no idea how to solve. Total lack of trust in institutions, media, dearth of innovation and investment, and totalitarian measures to rein in the unruly. Surely we haven't forgotten the "democratic" regimes practising their statecraft, be it in Trudeau's Canada, Starner' Britain or Andrew's Victoria(Australia). Meaningless platitudes about the superiority of Western democracies no longer hold water. Chinese one party system, whatever is being said against it, has long proven to deliver!!! Whether it's lifting 800 million people out of poverty or creating brilliant infrastructure, the West can only dream about, leading the world in the number of published scientific papers and patents, China has no need to emulate our "democracy" Even the most pathetic liers employed also as western journalists 😂with their anti China rhethoric and their BBC branded bag of tricks, are not able to hide the reality.

Japan tried to do that in the 1980s . They tried to buy up Manhhatten, so how did that work out ? Never bet against the USA. The land of the free and the home of the brave.

You are falling for the classic Halo Effect psychological fallacy. Yanis has already answered this. China is not Japan. Japan was an occupied country. It still is. China is the most sovereign country in existence today.

hardly wishful thinking given china has done it and developed their country. japan did it and developed their country, until usa told them to stop. korea did it and developed their country etc. controlling the financial oligarchs and better still nationalisiing finance is the key to economic development and financial and national freedom. maybe if you in the west did it too, you would not be slaves to the bankers today, working 60 years of your life and paying taxes and getting nothing in return for those taxes except more taxes.

@zenastronomy Many Americans suffer a lot financially under Capitalism. They simply don't understand (or don't want to face the reality) that Capitalism is what they should channel their frustrations at, rather than at one another, or at China or Russia. Under Capitalism, financial crises are created every certain number of years, it's not a stable economic system. The idea that Capitalism will bring a trickle down economy, has been proven again and again not to be working. As long as so many Americans continue to vote for the two mainstream political parties (Republican and Democratic), both which are aligned with the extreme implementation of Capitalism in the United States, the country will continue to endure financial hardship caused by inflation and other adverse outcomes of Capitalism, such as health system run by insurance companies, rising fuel and grocery prices and a huge inequality. It's time for implementing Socialism in North America, similar to the one with Chinese characteristics that's implemented in China, or at least the Social Welfare Model of some European countries, by all conscientious people starting to vote for the Socialist Party of the United States.
