Highlights as China win Gold in the Women's Fencing Team Epee during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

In my second viewing of this, it's camera flash. No question. Sparks generated from that kind of blade contact with that weapon is next to impossible.

I don't know if you are an American or Canadian but let me tell you first, fencing is more popular in the world than hockey or Americal football combined. It is one of the sports was part of every moder games since 1896. Some explanation for you about the 3 weapons too. All 3 is an imitation of an antient form of fencing. Let me continue, sabre-horseback fighting, high speed back and forth. Foil is duel to death. Only target is the torso, everything else is called, not surprisingly, off target. And your favorite, epee. That is duel to first blood. Toe or thumb, no matter what it is from. That is the point. So you don't understand fencing, I hope you learned something. where did this sport come from originally european in the olden days when they were using the sword like what is being used for defending and for conquer, so do not say that i am wrong it is originally for slaying so what i was getting is can this be part of the rules that was derived from what the epee was initially used, to stab the leg or palm that will win a battle so bro is this the rules which has changed from the initial rules used it is a joke to win by just stabbing the leg to be no1

It's a shame there has to be Womens and Men's fencing. Though you can argue for many sports, women and men are likely to have different strength levels etc, with fencing it's pure reaction time and a mix of endurance. There is no real logical reason to have them separated.

+Maxwell Edison Men have naturally longer arms and a greater potential for faster reflexes. Sure, humans have different strength levels and whatnot, but there aren't enough women biologically stronger than men for that not to be something that interferes with the nature of fair competition.

Jabari Spears Shrug. I've fenced short people, both male and female, with shorter arms. It' isn't an end-of-the-world trait when fencing, perhaps more challenging but it creates a need for a different tactic for them. I think the difference fencing-wise is minuscule.

why is fighting different from dueling? to duel is to fight. One may draw first blood but the other delivers a fatal strike. In real dueling the first touch of strike must be able to stun or immediately stop the continuity of movement of the other so that it can not strike back. Eskrima or arnis or bolo fighting/duel have the same consideration in fencing duel.

Women tend to play defensively/cautiously whereas the men are more aggressive and explosive. I prefer to watch the men.

It depends on who is fencing. As a fencer myself, I can tell you that many less experienced women and girls like to rush (which I like because they are impatient and therefore easy to confuse and beat). It is actually supposed to be a strategy to run down the clock, usually initiated by the leader of the bout.
