To my ear, the arpeggio triplets in the first movement of this quartet may have influenced Schumann's Konzertstück for four horns and Orchestra, Op. 86. which premiered in 1850. There is evidence from the Schumanns' joint diary that Clara and Robert had met the composer as early as 1844. Friedrich Constantin Homilius was born 15 October 1813, in Dresden. He was a horn player in a military band there through the 1830s and afterward engaged as the first horn player at the Imperial Theater in Petersburg. Later he became a professor at the Conservatory and the director of the Philharmonic Society. He was alive up to 1902. A fine horn player and a passable composer.
