meng zhi is really smart he took one look at su zhe and could tell it was lin shu so why do i feel like hes either playing dumb strategically or maybe the writers used his character carelessly to convey messages to the audience

In one of the earlier episodes, Meng Zhi said that Lin Shu/Su Zhe contacted him through letters a few years before and he couldn't believe his eyes. I think it's the same episode where they see each other in person again for the first time. Hope that helps!
