Mike, Dan and Yi react to some of the most touching Thai Commercials. Heartwarming commercials for products like life insurance or to help medical causes such as hair donation always feature short films that are aimed at the heartstrings. For some reasons, the most tearjerking commercials always seem to come out of Thailand.
Check out Double Chen (and Friends) News: / doublechennews

I relate to it as well. Iy's not only an Asian thing. My grandmother was like that as well. She lost her own mother at 11 and effectively raised her brothers and kept house/cooked by herself. Worked in the fields all her life , raised 9 children of her own. She was a tough woman, they had to be to survive. Gratuitous emotional displays and open sentimentality were not things she had time for.

Men sometimes ordain as a monk after their parents pass away. We believe becoming a monk (not necessary for the whole life) is good karma and good karma will also go to the parents too.
@pspaew
@pspaew 8 жыл бұрын
The second one, he is bald because he is ordained to be a monk. Thai people do that at the funeral of someone they respect highly, like for their parents. They can be ordained and stay a monk for only a day or more than that. The point is to give the good deeds made by being a monk to the deceased and the deceased may go to heaven. We called it “บวชหน้าไฟ” which means ordained before the fire (cremation).

Both of the videos are made by Thai life insurance companies. I understand how Thai parents raise their child. For me, I was never raised like Thai traditional way of raising even though I'm Thai, my self. But I've witnessed a lot from my friends that each family has their own way to raising their child.

This is exactly how my parents behave. I remember sending handmade greeting cards to my father when he was away for work and thought they never matter to him because he never mentioned receiving them. As I grew up I rarely talked to my father, unless it was really necessary (eg: PTA) and eventually we would see each other only at dinner or if he was late I saw him only on next dinner or next to next and we would never talk. One day I found my father's old diary and there they were all my greeting cards that I ever sent him. I wanted to hug my dad and tell him how much I loved him but as always couldn't get myself to even go up to him.

I'm with Mike and Yi... my parents are not expressive about how proud they are about our achievements. we kind of nonverbally know that they expect a lot of us... I realise this when I get to know my best friend's parents... they acknowledge my friends achievements and COMMUNICATE with them. one awkward moment was when my mom kissed me on the check on stage while receiving my diploma during high school graduation and things got kind of awkward because it was the first time and especially it was in public in front of 1k people... T_T

I liked the story they shared about giving their parents gifts as kids that their parents didn't like. My brother found out this once - 33 years after giving it. When my brother was 15 he painted a picture for our mom and it turned up recently when the Super pull it out of the ceiling when he was fixing some crumbling plaster ... it turned out that 33 years ago the ceiling had a hole and my mom used the canvas to help plaster over the original hole in the ceiling.

i strongly feel that a lot of parents in other cultures do the same thing......show lack of emotion i am also an only child and my mom would never hug me......she showed how much she cared by doing things for me.....when it came to doing well in school she would never post my awards on the wall...but she would buy me some thing. this proves to me that a lot of different parents show their love by action i guess. my grandmother was kind...but i really never heard her i say i love you...may be it was the era our parents grew up in......that emtions were not shown with words.....but with action......over all great video.

@rich1051414

crazy808ish Of course, but that isn't what we are talking about lol. People not used to seeing people of certain ethnicities will find people of that ethnicity to look like the few people they know who share it, even if they don't look anything like those people, so usually it is something people tend to avoid, to prevent looking ignorant, or at least, recognizing it could be their ignorance which makes them think that :P Your response is enough to make me realize he actually does look a bit like Jackie Chan though, for you to be reacting that way :P This is the first video I watched with these guys, so I am sorry for not knowing their names.

I remember one commercial where this homeless guy would sleep on the sidewalk in front of this shop, and every day the shop owner would chase him off and be really mean. Then one day the shop owner came to work and realized the homeless guy was gone, and when he watched the security footage, he realized that every night, the homeless man cleaned up in front of the shop, and the last night he was there, some thugs tried to break into the shop, and the homeless man chased them away, but he got stabbed in the process and died. That one really hit home for me, mainly because I spent 2 years homeless when I was a teen...

I am a total sucker for these short films! I try not to watch them, but I do... just because I know they are going to get me! I am working in China, it is easier to see how the non-verbal relationship between parent and child can be viewed differently. My personal two cents is, there has to be a balance. Telling and showing - there would be no confusion.

In Thai culture of a typical Thai/Buddhist family, when someone older in the family pass away (could be mom, dad, or grand parents). The son (or the only younger male) in the family would shave their head and become a monk for 3 - 7 days at the time of cremation ceremony in order to pay respect and create boon to send their love ones to heaven. They believe that when the spirit of the love one see the yellow robed monk who's someone in the family, they will receive a big amount of boon and be able to pass on to the next realms or ascend to heaven. However, if the younger male of the family had already become a monk (for 3 - 7 days or months) while their mom, dad, or grand parents were still alive and saw their son or grand kids as the yellow robed monk. They will automatically received the boon and go to heaven when they die. So the first situation only apply when none of the male in that family has ever become a monk.

I drew a picture of my family and got an A from 1st grade, I went home and put it on the fridge. The next day my mom yelled at me for putting stuff on the fridge and threw it away. TT_TT

I already watched all of these Thai “commercials” years ago. Also, I’ve never heard my parents say I love u and I’ve never said it to anybody either, but my dog.

To explain why the the boy is bald in the second commercial: It's tradition in Lao and Thai culture that when a close relative passes away, the boys (not sure how many) in the family would shave their heads and be ordained as a novice monk to make merits, in other words create good karma, so that the soul of the deceased person would go to a happy place. Oh and only boys can become monks, girls are not allowed. At least that's what my mom and sister said. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't go to Lao/Thai funerals often
