What is the essence of architecture? Ma Yansong, one of China's most avant-garde architects of his generation, has a unique interpretation. Ma was born in Beijing, a place he called his playground when he was a child. He shuttled through the roofs of traditional hutongs. That's where he honed his eye for the beauty of landscapes filled with mountains, lakes, trees and quaint buildings in the Chinese garden. His childhood experience laid the ground for his architecture design philosophy.
