One small detail to add, I have the 5kW Maxspeedingrods and it's controller does go to sleep with a black screen after a few minutes. I also tested the burn mixture with a CO tester and found it to be perfect, averaging 1-2ppm once at temp. The fan is also double balanced and is very quiet, despite being brushed. It's controller also has audible speech assistant. I'm very impressed with it so far.
@thrawn0r24 күн бұрын
I have the 8kw Maxspeedingrods and my problem is that it doesnt fully turn off when reaching the set temperature but powers down to 2kw indefinitely, converting the camper into a sauna. I received a replacement main board and control panel from their support but reading the reviews, it seems that this is indeed the normal behaviour, making the unit not suitable to run over night. Does yours have the same issue? It seems that the cheapest heater turning fully off and on around the set temperature is the planar autoterm (since 2024 model) Any cheaper recommendations?
@alasdair416124 күн бұрын
@@thrawn0r Yes, most heaters need to maintain the minimum flame burn to sustain combustion and as a result they keep pumping heat out. There are some that will fully cycle with a PID based control algorithm that will give more control down low by completely shutting off and re lighting, but they also use more power from your battery as the glow plug is energised every thermostatic cycle, and they would probably also consume more glow plugs over time. I have a friend here who had the same issue as you, but he ended up swapping a 2kW heater instead of the 8 and found it much better for overnight comfort and his fuel consumption also reduced significantly. I also had a similar problem in my cabin where minimum setting was still too hot to keep the door closed, but now I just turn on a ventilation fan that pulls cold air in near the bed that moderates the temperature effectively. The 2kW versions are smaller and have smaller air pipes, but are quite easy to adapt. If my cabin heater dies I'll replace it with a 2kW as well, I have one in the box waiting, lol.

Just an update: I ordered an HLN 2kW heater from Kevin today and responses were fast and order process was simple. The wifi controller isn’t available yet, still a month out per Kevin, but he offered me a free upgrade once it does become available if it’s not ready by the time my order ships. My new heater arrived. Been testing, OLOEY 12V-24V Diesel Air Heater 5-8kw £80. Worked out of the box, no smoke. But the inlet silencer not very good, just hollow inside. So have a few exhaust silencers so put one on the air intake, what a difference. Stopped the intake roar. Have a box silencer for outlet, definitely better than the tin plate one. The controller just has a 6 step temp. controller. Better as you can change at will from remote.

I appreciate your buyer's guide. I bought a Chinese heater and after installing it, it worked for 2 hours before it thew a high temp sensor code. Reminded the first didn't work, I expected is that a replacement wouldn't either. So, I ordered three new sensors from three different manufacturers. I also ordered a rebuild kit. It's still 15 days out. When the first high temp sensor arrived, I installed it, only to have the unit throw two new codes: Underpower and overpower. Yet another reminder that it's Chinese. I've ordered a new motherboard and controller... 20 days out. If it doesn't work, there will be a sledgehammer party at Peter's house. I expect I'll be buying either an Hcaloric or something a bit more expensive. Thanks again for the buyer's guide. I'm polishing-up my sledgehammer...

I've spent weeks trying to decide if a diesel heater was the correct choice for my Bongo Friendee petrol driven, self-converted camper. It's almost the last job, and I've done 95% of the design and actual work myself: not bad for a 69yr old disabled old bag methinks😉 This video told me everything I needed to know and was very unsure about, thank you so much. It's down to the Lavaner Pro 2kw and the HLN Aerolyn 4kw now, but I'm wondering if the HLN, which I think is my prefered choice, would be over-kill? The van living space is only 130cm x 210cm and there's no space beneath the front seats, which is where most people seem to mount them although it could possibly go beneath the R&R bed, by the back door, but then I'd worry about sleeping above it! Having it outside the van would be difficult as I can't bend my back much and I can't kneel down either, so filling the tank would be a huge challenge! I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas/solutions which could help, thanks 👍😊
@vanlifesurvivorsguide11 ай бұрын
Hi Lynette, yeah i think the 4kw hln would be over kill but they do a 2kw hln too that would be perfect for a bongo. Yeah as long as these is nothing in the way under the van is should be fine, but with a HLN you wouldn't really need to be getting down to it as they are so reliable. Where are you based? We would be happy to take a look for free for you we are based in Bradford

I have two 5 kw unbranded units to heat my insulated garage. I have nat gas overhead heater. But don't like using it. Too noisy burns too much nat gas. No shut off for flue. So when it shuts off all the heat goes up the flue. I have a piece of cardboard with magnets I stick in to seal the flue. Then use my diesel heaters to heat garage. I installed an hcalory engine preheater in my pickup to preheat engine when it gets minus 40. It's on its second year and still working good. So impressed I just bought another for my other pickup. But new one I got comes with different remote and in car control module. Wish they would have stuck with the old controller. But the one I bought last year still works good. Hope the new controller and remote works as good as the older ones
@MrRatkilr11 ай бұрын
For my garage I have one that is all in one. The other the heater uses a remote fuel tank. Not sure I like the all in one unit. The tank sits right above the burner. If tank cracks or leaks it would drip fuel in burner. Only takes one to heat garage to working temp. I fire both up to heat garage faster. Then shut off the all in one. Did mods to my main one to make burn chamber last longer.

@johnhansen33710 ай бұрын
Another good video. The recommended manufacturers are the ones often quoted within EU van and boat circles. The Russian versions are also good, but with less variety, (but in some ways that can be an advantage). I will check out the video on controller types, but on my last investigation of the few dozen I have come across, there were several different types, creating well over 20 possible combinations with some connectors failing to match. Some worked when wires were reconnected to the appropriate pins, but in short, the variety of controllers and mother boards was unforgivable. In a few cases the chip used on the board, in identical units, was completely different, so I must simply accept the term 'universal' on face value. I have not had problems with the green fuel lines, or even the 'clip on' clamps, but again, in so many areas of these heaters, a bit of standardisation of parts would be the common sense solution. Not much chance there unfortunately. Not decrying the fine work by this team at vanlife, the solution would be to control imports to ensure a standard 'high quality gateway' into the UK. So many faults, incompatibilities, and downright rip off adverts would be avoided. It is a shame that such videos need to be made as general engineering principle would demand that parts could be obtained which are always compatible and then fitting instructions could be easily copied and swapped. These heaters are crying out for a warehouse controlled import infrastructure, which must of course involve the main players in its creation. Vanlife would be at the front of the queue, obviously. Great vid. lots of useful data, and some sense is being made of a snowstorm of parts, incompatibilities, lack of backward compatibility, and vague advertising surrounding these products. Some day, hopefully, this jungle will be tamed ?

The table at 11:34 can't be right. When you calculate the amount of fuel between the 2kW and 5kW (frequency * fuel) it shows that the 2kW heater gets more fuel than the 5kW heater, both in low and high setting, which is nonsense since the fuel amount basically is the amount of heat so the 5kW heater should get more fuel than the 2kW heater not the other way around

How does the 4kw HLN AEROLYN compare against the 5kw Autoterm? They are around the same price and the autoterm are obviously very well known.
@ChrisLegend-t9yАй бұрын
The lowest and highest output of HLN 4kW are slightly smaller than Autoterm, so less automatic shut down under auto mode from HLN. The wire protection and controllers are better from HLN, which heard get designers for BYD/Tesla involved
@shaundevine8052Ай бұрын
HLN every single time. Back up and customer service is 1 million times better as is the product mate. Not forgetting that Autoterm are Russian and not Latvian as they claim to be. Make of That what you will.

Hi, where can I buy a Pro Max 5KW Alpine. I have emailed Craig from their website and they have sent me a Chinese account to transfer they money over to. Feels a bit dodgy not buying from a website. Anyone had this issue? Thanks

I've ordered two of the HLN 2000W heaters and while the service and responsiveness have been great, they have both given me an E1 (load short circuit) error. I'm using the harness they provided, and my power source is a Bluetti 200Max. Did you guys have any issues on your setup with the HLN 2000W? (I'm using the new wireless controller).
@vanlifesurvivorsguide5 ай бұрын
How many amps does the 12v output give you on the bluetti? they normally only have a 10 amp out and the glow plug uses about 11 amps on start up. Deffo a power supply problem either way if it is happening to both heaters

@@vanlifesurvivorsguide The confusion was the connections. There are two that are identical and I had them swapped. Great support from Ken.

Does the Lavaner Pro MAX and its special controller shut off when it hits the correct temp? Or does it keep running on low like the normal CDH controllers?
@vanlifesurvivorsguide Жыл бұрын
it just keeps running, it would be a problem for the battery this is why even the best heaters do it. We do have a solution though in our newest blog post. I will post a link in the description of the video so you can have a look and see if it will be any help to you.

Thanks for the update, I am just about to purchase a Lavana 2Kw unit. What are your thoughts on tapping into the diesel return line from the engine? This looks like an easier connection than dropping the fuel tank.

Just went to buy the Lavaner 2kw at the link you gave and it states it does not ship to my address... UK mainland...
@vanlifesurvivorsguide11 ай бұрын
Hi mate, you need to either sign up to ali experess so it knows your address then it works differently or download the app on your phone and order from there i believe. Failing that if you scroll down a bit there is an email for Craig he from lavaner and he will point you in the right direction for uk stock and distributers :)

The same standalone heaters are whats inside the all in one unit. They're the same thing. Why can't they be used in vehicles?
@stephenlord59911 ай бұрын
They can be used IF you disassemble it, remove the actual heater and buy a mounting turret and mount the exhaust connection from the heater outside the vehicle but you’ll probably need to extend the wiring to the controller and buy longer fuel line

WHY YOU DONT RECOMMEND THE ALL IN ONE DIESEL HEATERS TO PUT INSIDE YOUR VAN ?
@stephenlord59911 ай бұрын
Because the exhaust connection would be inside the vehicle

@@stephenlord599 ok i didnt know that, i thought it had a hose to run out the bottom of your vehicle, yes that would be something i wouldnt trust either

@@owensdaniels6244 the exhaust (and inlet) is cast into the body and straight to the burn chamber .. it’s all one piece. This should be joined to the exhaust pipe outside any enclosed area. It basically pushes on and is held by a clip ..
