How about reviewing Intermezzo (1939)? It's an Academy nominated film starring Leslie Howard as a virtuoso violinist and Ingrid Bergman as a pianist (which she is). There's a 3-minute clip on KZbin. I thought it was well done; maybe films were done better back in the Golden Age. But I'm not a violinist…so I'd love to see your view.

I'm not entirely sure whether this is a case of sājiāo or not, I'm not Chinese nor a Chinese expert, but read this: "First, let’s take a look at precisely what sā jiāo is - if you’ve never seen a full-on sājiāo in public, it’s a sight to behold. Grown women (and occasionally men) will stop in the street or sidewalk and cross their arms, stomp their feet and refuse to utilize their senses of reason until the demand at hand is met. It’s bizarre-and even alarming-to observe as a Westerner. But in Chinese culture, it’s widely practiced and accepted as a part of feminine character. If a woman doesn’t sā jiāo from time to time, her peers might not regard her as feminine enough." www.yoyochinese.com/blog/learn-mandarin-chinese-whiny-but-equal-tantrums-sajiao-chinese-feminism-gender-roles It's basically women throwing temper tantrums as a way to act feminine

@@zergreenone8111 I don't think SaJiao was what she does in this clip. By not showing her anger after woke up by his practicing, I think she just doesn't want to piss her younger brother, given that he has mental problems. Sajiao is a thing that normally young women does in front of someone intimate and senior to them, like parents or old brothers and sisters. And, to be honest, most Chinese women don't do that. ...Whenever I watch these shows, it always feels like they're written by someone who doesn't actually play music. Because neither I, nor any other musician I have ever known in my life, ever actually thinks as deeply about music as people in these shows do. Either I'm not trying hard enough or we, collectively as musicians, have successfully fooled everyone into thinking we're just all this poetic and introspective.
@ohthefrogs8075
@ohthefrogs8075 3 жыл бұрын
the same goes for mental disorders. we're not all gloomy in that specific romanticised "too intelligent and poetic for anyone else to understand" way. Of course there are people who's mental health will have a similar effect to that and representing that in media is okay, but it become a problem when all representation become "the tortured artist" and mental health struggles are treated as this beautiful mythical idea, because that's the only (or main) thing many people have seen it presented as. It can also be really harmful to (especially younger) people who are going through that and feel like they need to live up to the aesthetic for their struggles to be validated, which can often be counter productive and lead to them 'rejecting' positive moods, to fit the always somber image. Or people might feel extra inadequate, because these characters are always shown to have these incredible qualities/skills (like the introspection/wisdom for example) that almost "make up for" the disorder, which just isn't the case for many people irl. (especially in autistic representation, this is a really big problem). But yea, sorry to turn your comment all serious and dramatic. I just wanted to add that, because I feel like there's a lot of overlap (and often characters who are musicians with mental health issues seem to just follow that one stereotype).

I wonder if for some of these dramas if they just give them a violin and say 'here pretend to play this' and then chose the music to edit over later. Like they're just pretending to play to nothing and have no idea what they're suppose to be pretending to play. I feel like that's the only way it can be this bad. I can't play violin but I know that for one note (which even the most untrained of ears can tell when its a single, unchanging note the bows not gonna be going back and forth 5 times the right hand fingers all moving up and down like crazy.

I know that feel. Apparently, it has a name: Dunning-Kruger effect; a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Non-shamefully copy-pasted from Google Search.
@brassholio
@brassholio 5 жыл бұрын
@@Antyla I always thought that the Dunning-Kruger effect was more of a personality trait. Like Donald Trump. The people who have the least amount of skill and intelligence are the most vocal whereas the people who actually have talent let it speak for itself. That's my understanding of it anyway.
@VanityShion
@VanityShion 5 жыл бұрын
brassholio Close, but it’s not really about being vocal, although that can be a side effect. It’s more the concept that people who aren’t as smart believe they are smarter than they are, but the smarter the person actually is, the less likely they are to really believe it. I’m sure there’s a better way to phrase it but I think I got the point across. I could give metaphors or examples but this comment is already stupidly long
