Chinese Electric Shock Toys (Prank Gadgets)

Test and teardown of 3 more Chinese electric shock prank toys. A lighter, a chewing gum and a laser pointer. All of them give you an electric shock when you try to use them. The chip drives the high voltage boost transformer at 100Hz. The output has 300V peak voltage and a current up to 4mA. Warning: These devices may be dangerous.

These arent as bad as one i won on a fun fair which actually had some kind of electric motor and coil inside and it was powered by 2 aaa batteries. that thing would make the whole hand cramp up. It was a fake mp3 player. I dont remember how it was exactly because i was so scared of it as a kid i took it apart and it went in the trash later

Nowhere near my grandfather's wooden box. It runs on a big 4.5V battery and has a big HV transformer in it. The core is a steel rod and it doubles up as an electromagnet of a doorbell mechanical oscillator, turning DC to AC with no transistors. It has two rod electrodes, one for each hand. You really can't release them, until someone turns it off. This pre-transistor era "toy" would be considered an execution device nowadays :D.

My brother built one years ago as a science fair "project". Basically he used the motor in series with the secondary side of a step-down transformer to act as a crude sort of rotary switch. Wired up backwards, the primary gives a thousand volts or so of output for a few volts of AC input. It did work, but I don't think it was too well received at the fair. Id guess it may have worked like that.

Definitely AC. Because you cannot step up DC with a transformer. The chip acts as an inverter. Converting DC to AC

Well, its old video but i just want to say, you measure the current at short circuit, that means at almost 0volts. This type of shock devices have voltage around 1000volts open circuit, at 3mA that's 3watts. Its imposible for those tiny batteries to deliver such power. The real current is maybe not more than few micro amps and even then the voltage probably drops to few hundreds (200 or 300) if assume your skin is very dry and the resistance is very high. But otherwise this type of toys are very dangerous and must be kept away of children's.
